Impact of Social and Mainstream Media Campaigns on Knowledge of Mpox Among Residents of Kiambu County, Kenya.

Mpox is a re-emerging zoonotic illness that has raised concerns worldwide because of its outbreak in nonendemic areas, including Kenya. Following the recent outbreak of mpox in Kenya, the Ministry of Health rolled out a public health campaign via social and mainstream media. However, the impact of these campaigns has yet to be assessed. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was adopted, with a total of 5,920 residents randomly selected. A structured and validated questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data were analysed via Stata version 14.0. Descriptive statistics were used to summ

Evaluation of visual function and needs in adult patients with bardet-biedl syndrome.

PURPOSE: To assess the visual needs of the adult population with Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) and to ensure that this is addressed by a national Bardet-Biedl Service. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of all adults under a national BBS Clinic (Birmingham, United Kingdom) was performed using the BBS Ophthalmic Assessment Tool, a novel tool designed to capture the key elements of visual function, impact on lifestyle, and clinical findings relevant to BBS. RESULTS: Sixty-two adult patients were confirmed to have BBS. Bardet-Biedl syndrome mutations were identified in 51, most commonly BBS1 (n

Back to the future: a review of peritoneal dialysis for acute kidney injury.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute kidney injury requiring dialysis (AKI-D) is a growing global health problem with high mortality. This perspective re-evaluates the role of acute peritoneal dialysis in the modern management of AKI-D, challenging the prevailing extracorporeal paradigm and highlighting its potential in various clinical scenarios. RECENT FINDINGS: We review the current evidence comparing peritoneal dialysis to other renal replacement therapies, demonstrating comparable outcomes in many cases. We discuss the advantages of peritoneal dialysis, including hemodynamic stability, avoidance of

Impact of smoking on the complement system: a narrative review.

Smoking is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, resulting in an increased risk of cardiovascular, respiratory, inflammatory, and degenerative diseases. In this review, we highlight the complex interactions between smoking and activation of different components of the complement system, in order to underscore the notion that its dysregulation underlies-mechanistically-as well as exacerbates the progression of a host of disease processes. Moreover, we also briefly delve into components of tobacco smoke-including chemical constituents like tobacco glycoprotein (TGP) and particulate matter (P

Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy: What Nurses Need to Know to Provide Preeminent Perioperative Care.

This article aims to explore details of research, evidence, and key concepts intended for nurses and other healthcare clinicians surrounding the paradigm shift in therapeutic endoscopy relating to the third-space endoscopic procedure, peroral endoscopic myotomy. Although many medical publications detail the procedure, there are no specific guidelines for nurses to reference when caring for the patient undergoing peroral endoscopic myotomy. With scant published resources available to direct nurses distinctly in the delivery of exceptional care to patients undergoing peroral endoscopic myotomy,

Rehabilitation of patients with spondyloarthritis: a narrative review.

Nonpharmacological interventions are one of the mainstreams of treatment for patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA). They include education, measures regarding joint protection, posture and rest, therapeutic exercise, physical therapy modalities, orthoses, and acupuncture. A key component in the rehabilitation of patients with SpA entities is therapeutic exercise, which can be performed as land-based or water-based. Positive effects of the exercises are manifested in reducing pain, maintaining mobility, improving posture, increasing aerobic capacity and improving quality of life. The best effec

Development and Evaluation of Intelligent Serious Games for Children With Learning Difficulties: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Positive results can be obtained through game-based learning, but children with physical disabilities have fewer opportunities to participate in enjoyable physical activity. Because intelligent serious games can provide personalized learning opportunities, motivate the learner, teach 21st-century skills, and provide an environment for authentic and relevant assessment, they may be used to help children and adolescents with different kinds of learning disabilities to develop social and cognitive competences. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to produce and evaluate a suite of int

Developing social interaction and understanding in individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a groupwork intervention.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with social interaction and understanding lie at the heart of the communication disorder that characterises the autism spectrum. This study sought to improve social communication for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by means of a groupwork intervention focusing on social and emotional perspective-taking, conversation skills, and friendship skills. It also aimed to address some of the limitations of previous interventions, including a lack of generalisation to other settings, so as to maximise inclusion in the community. METHOD: A group of 46 high functi

Social inclusion through attitudinal change in Singaporean teachers.

The development of positive teacher attitudes towards students with disabilities is a catalyst for their social inclusion. It is therefore important that the foundations for positive teacher attitudes be laid in pre-service teacher education programmes. This article reports a pilot study that investigated the impact of a disability awareness course on the attitudes of mainstream pre-service teachers in Singapore toward disability and inclusion. A researcher constructed survey was developed to enable the pre-service teachers to report their perspectives of the changes in their awareness and att

Expanding role of the breast advanced nurse practitioner: mainstream pathway for genetic testing.

Genomic panel testing is increasingly being undertaken in the breast specialty to enhance diagnosis, treatment and surveillance recommendations. With increasing numbers of patients becoming eligible for testing, it is useful for advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) and clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) who possess a relevant skill set to develop their abilities to include genomic mainstream panel testing counselling and to create a service to provide this. Within the breast specialty, ANPs and CNSs who undertake family history assessment as part of their role are perfectly placed to lead on thi

Syndemic Pattern of Sexualized Drug Use and Mental Distress Among Trans Women/Khawaja Siras in Pakistan: Results From a Multicentric Latent Class Analysis.

Trans women, or Khawaja Sira, are a marginalized community in Pakistan. There is limited social inclusivity and high stigma for them in mainstream spaces. This leads to mental distress and compromised psychological well-being. The current study aims to identify latent classes of mental distress, substance use patterns, and their associated factors. A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted from 1 May 2025 to 10 June 2025 at seven community-based organizations. Self-identified trans women were recruited through the HIV community organization. Anxiety and depressive symptoms were measured

A prevalence study of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Russia.

INTRODUCTION: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by heterogeneity in presentation. In recent decades, ASD prevalence has risen globally, yet data from non-Western and middle-income countries, including Russia, remain scarce. Thus, Russian official statistics report a prevalence of 0.41 per 1,000 (0.041%), far below global estimates of 32.2 per 1,000 (3.2%), indicating underdiagnosis. This study provides the first population-based estimate of ASD prevalence among Russian elementary school children and examines barriers to diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: T

Experiences of metastatic prostate cancer patients with a mainstream genetic testing pathway.

Patients with metastatic prostate cancer (mPCa) are eligible for germline genetic testing. This study assessed the experiences of mPCa patients undergoing genetic testing after being counselled by non-genetic healthcare professionals (ngHCPs: urologists, oncologists, nurses). We assessed the psychosocial impact, decision-making difficulties and knowledge of genetics. In a prospective cohort study across 15 hospitals in the Netherlands, genetic testing was discussed and requested by ngHCPs. Patients completed questionnaires shortly after receiving pre-test genetic counselling and 4 weeks and 6

Risk factors and trajectories for self-harm, neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health conditions in pupils in alternative education provision in Wales: population-based electronic cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pupils in alternative education provision, known as 'Educated in Other Than At School' (EOTAS) in Wales, UK, are among the most vulnerable learners and who, for reasons such as mental health or behavioural challenges, do not attend a mainstream or special school. AIMS: We compared self-harm, neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health conditions between EOTAS pupils and controls with similar characteristics, before and after being in EOTAS provision. METHOD: This population-based electronic cohort study included pupils in Wales aged 7-18 years, from the academic years 2010-11

Developmental Scores and Prevalence of Functional Difficulty Among Preschool Children in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Disability-inclusive early childhood development and education (ECDE) plays a crucial role in ensuring that all children, including those with disabilities, reach their developmental potential. However, there is little data on the prevalence of disability in mainstream ECDE in most low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), or on early learning and developmental outcomes of children with disabilities in these classrooms. METHODS: Data were collected on 1756 children aged 3-9 years enrolling in ECDE at 18 schools in Homa Bay or Turkana Counties, Kenya, at the start of the 2021 and 2

Interactive Apps Promote Learning of Basic Mathematics in Children With Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Interactive apps delivered on touch-screen tablets can be effective at supporting the acquisition of basic skills in mainstream primary school children. This technology may also be beneficial for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) as it can promote high levels of engagement with the learning task and an inclusive learning environment. However, few studies have measured extent of learning for SEND pupils when using interactive apps, so it has yet to be determined if this technology is effective at raising attainment for these pupils. We report the first observationa

Major clinical improvement in a boy with developmental disabilities and a PTPN4 mutation with intensive re-education and an enriched environment in a day care hospital: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 4 (PTPN4) is a gene involved in glutamate downstream signaling contributing to cerebral maturation. Loss-of-function of this gene has been reported in patients showing various neurodevelopmental disorders, although the PTPN4 gene is not clearly considered a disease-causing gene in the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man catalogue. CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report the case of a 7-year-old white boy with a homogeneous, heterozygous, 170 kb chromosomal deletion encompassing several exons of the PTPN4 gene. The mutation was transmitted

Rough Sex: A Conceptual and Empirical Review.

Sexual practices commonly known as "rough sex" have become prevalent among adolescents and people in the first few decades of adulthood. Some (e.g. sexual "choking" and smothering) pose serious health risks. The increased prevalence of rough sex has presented new challenges to sexuality educators who now often field questions from young people about these sexual practices - sometimes to the shock and upset of parents and community members. Clinicians, too, have observed more marks and bruises on their patients, which have often been attributed to rough sex. Young people report having first lea

Differences in the acceptance of wife abuse among ethnic minority Garo and Santal and mainstream Bengali communities in rural Bangladesh.

Studies on wife abuse in Bangladesh predominantly include the mainstream Bengali population, although there are at least 27 ethnic minority communities including a few 'female-centered' matrilineal groups living in the country. This study explored ethnic differences in the attitudinal acceptance of wife abuse among matrilineal ethnic minority Garo, patrilineal ethnic minority Santal, and mainstream patriarchal Bengali communities in rural Bangladesh. Adopting a cross-sectional design, the study included 1,929 women and men randomly selected from 24 Garo, Santal, and Bengali villages. Multivari

Nursing roles, competencies, and education in precision oncology: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses contribute across the precision cancer care pathway, providing continuous, person-centred care and supporting genomic testing integration. However, the scope of nursing competencies required for precision cancer care and the extent to which current education prepares nurses for these roles remain unclear. This scoping review maps and synthesises evidence on nurses' roles and competencies in precision cancer care, and educational provision in this field. METHODS: A JBI scoping review was conducted; MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase and Scopus were systematically searched on
