Future of supplementary private hospitalization insurance in Switzerland: a policy brief.

BACKGROUND: Voluntary hospitalization insurance (VHI) in Switzerland has lost part of its traditional role as mandatory health insurance has expanded, hospital financing reforms have increased public co-financing of inpatient care, and patterns of hospitalization have changed. Nevertheless, VHI remains strategically important for hospitals, insurers, and some providers. ANALYSIS: This policy brief draws on a structured review of academic and grey literature, regulatory and policy documents, market information, and ten semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders. The analysis identifies f

Overcoming publication and dissemination bias in infectious diseases clinical trials.

Non-timely reporting, selective reporting, or non-reporting of clinical trial results are prevalent and serious issues. WHO mandates that summary results be available in registries within 12 months of study completion and published in full text within 24 months. However, only a limited number of clinical trials in infectious diseases, including those done during the COVID-19 pandemic, have their results posted on ClinicalTrials.gov. An analysis of 50 trials of eight antiviral drugs tested against COVID-19 with a completion date of at least 2 years ago revealed that only 18% had their results p

Surveillance of adverse events following immunization: 10 years' experience in Oman.

A descriptive record-based review of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) was carried out in Oman using the national database for the period 1996-2005. A total of 790 adverse event reports were received with an annual rate during the review period of 33.7 per 100 000 population or 10.8 per 100 000 doses administered. There were no reported deaths. The most frequently reported AEFI were BCG adenitis (69.7 per 100 000 doses) and local reactions (3.6 per 100 000 doses respectively). The statistically significant higher rates among males, in children aged > 2 years and in some sparsely pop

Assessing the reporting of Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika to the National Surveillance System in Colombia from 2014-2017: A Capture-recapture analysis accounting for misclassification of arboviral diagnostics.

BACKGROUND: Chikungunya, dengue, and Zika are three different arboviruses which have similar symptoms and are a major public health issue in Colombia. Despite the mandatory reporting of these arboviruses to the National Surveillance System in Colombia (SIVIGILA), it has been reported that the system captures less than 10% of diagnosed cases in some cities. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To assess the scope and degree of arboviruses reporting in Colombia between 2014-2017, we conducted an observational study of surveillance data using the capture-recapture approach in three Colombian cities. …

Improving patient care by reporting problems with medical devices.

Healthcare practitioners are the primary users of medical devices for direct patient care. As such, they are in the best position to recognize problems that result from the use of medical devices. The outcome of a device-related adverse event or product problem, as with any other medical product, can be serious and result in illness injury, or even death. The sooner that FDA learns about a problem, the sooner the agency can take action to protect patient and user safety. Healthcare practitioners are major contributors to the knowledge base related to device use and safety through astute monito

Timeliness in the notification of spotted fever in Brazil: Evaluating compulsory reporting strategies and digital disease detection.

Spotted fever is caused by rickettsia species, and is the most important tick-borne disease. In Brazil, it requires national compulsory notification to the Ministry of Health. Since 2007, all suspected cases of spotted fever have been integrated into the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). In this descriptive study we evaluate the timeliness (expressed in number of days between time of clinical suspicion and reporting) of the compulsory notification of spotted fever cases in SINAN and the strategy for digital disease detection (DDD). This study analysed the information from the SIN

Gonorrhoea on the rise in Denmark since 2022: distinct clones drive increase in heterosexual individuals.

A surge in gonorrhoea in Denmark has occurred since 2022, a 46% increase from 2021. National surveillance, leveraging mandatory reporting and epidemiological data, highlights three distinct clades linked to heterosexual transmission. Despite the rise, these exhibit high susceptibility, contrasting MSM-associated strains. Geographical hotspots and age-specific patterns further illuminate transmission dynamics. The combination of genomic and epidemiological data provides novel insights into the evolving landscape of gonorrhoea, indicating potential shifts in infection dynamics and transmissibili…

Large concomitant outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis emergency visits in adults and food-borne events suspected to be linked to raw shellfish, France, December 2019 to January 2020.

On 27 December 2019, the French Public Health Agency identified a large increase in the number of acute gastroenteritis and vomiting visits, both in emergency departments and in emergency general practitioners' associations providing house-calls. In parallel, on 26 and 27 December, an unusual number of food-borne events suspected to be linked to the consumption of raw shellfish were reported through the mandatory reporting surveillance system. This paper describes these concomitant outbreaks and the investigations' results.

Risk factors that predict longitudinal patterns of substantiated and unsubstantiated maltreatment reports.

BACKGROUND: Substantiated and unsubstantiated reports of maltreatment are associated with similar risk of emotional and behavioral problems. However, substantiation status often determines service provision. OBJECTIVE: We examined substantiated and unsubstantiated reports to identify patterns of recurrence over a five-year period and identified family risk factors that predicted recurrence patterns. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We studied a subsample (N = 246,021) of the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System from 2011-2015. METHODS: Measures included child, caregiver, and child protecti

Professionals' Attitude Toward Reporting Child Sexual Abuse in Saudi Arabia.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) requires specialized knowledge and training that includes forensic interview skills. The aim of this study was to determine variations in professionals' attitudes toward CSA by measuring three aspects of forensic attitudes (sensitivity, specificity, and skepticism) and evaluating disagreements concerning the assessment of CSA cases in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional, web-based study, in which the Child Forensic Attitude Scale was used to measure professionals' attitudes, was conducted. Professionals who dealt with suspected cases of CSA as part of their jobs or were in

The influence of childhood sexual abuse on adolescent outcomes: the roles of gender, poverty, and revictimization.

Research on child sexual abuse has focused on adult revictimization and outcomes. This article examines the rate of child maltreatment revictimization among male and female children reported to child protective services for child sexual abuse and whether revictimization impacts outcomes. Using longitudinal administrative data, Cox regressions were used to examine relationships between initial report of child sexual abuse, maltreatment revictimization, and adolescent outcomes among children from poor and nonpoor families. Despite no significant differences in child sexual abuse rates between po

The role of stalking in domestic violence crime reports generated by the Colorado Springs Police Department.

A review of 1,785 domestic violence crime reports generated by the Colorado Springs Police Department found that 1 in 6 (16.5 percent) contained evidence the suspect stalked the victim. Female victims were significantly more likely than male victims to allege stalking by their partners (18.3 vs. 10.5 percent). Most stalkers were former rather than current intimates. Regardless of victims' gender, reports with stalking allegations were significantly less likely to mention physical abuse or victim injury in the presenting condition, to involve households with children, or to involve victims and
