Diagnosis and management of hypersensitivity reactions to vaccines.

INTRODUCTION: Many countries in Europe now recommend and enforce mandatory vaccinations to improve vaccination coverage. Thus, the number of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) may show an increase. Among these events, severe hypersensitivity reactions to vaccines are rare. However, it is important that they be identified and recognized so that they may be adequately managed. AREAS COVERED: The literature search was undertaken through PubMed and Embase to identify English-language papers focusing on hypersensitivity to vaccines. EXPERT OPINION: Hypersensitivity reactions following v…

Tick borne encephalitis TBE--vaccination in non-endemic countries.

The increase of TBE cases in Europe has become a problem of international public health and travel medicine, because it is not only of concern for endemic areas, but also for visitors from non-endemic countries. Although highly effective modern vaccines are on the market in 28 European countries, there are still 7, mainly Eastern European, countries with no or an uncertain number of cases and without licensed modern vaccines. The prevailing danger for travellers, however, lies in underestimation and not awareness of the disease by public authorities, travel agencies and by the travellers thems

Evaluation of the Development of Post-Vaccination Immunity against Selected Bacterial Diseases in Children of Post-Solid-Organ-Transplant Mothers.

Pregnancy after organ transplantation is considered high-risk and requires supervision in specialized centers. The impact of immunosuppression on the developing fetus is still the subject of research. It has been shown that it affects lymphocyte populations in the first year of life. For this reason, researchers suggest postponing mandatory infant vaccinations. The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of intrauterine exposure of the fetus to immunosuppression on the immunogenicity of protective vaccinations against selected bacterial pathogens. The ELISA method was used to determine t

Serostatus of IgG antibody against mumps virus in adult population of Al Madinah Al Munawarah, Saudi Arabia.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the frequency and distribution of mumps-specific IgG antibodies among the healthy adult Saudi population in Al Madinah Al Munawarah, Saudi Arabia, where mandatory vaccination against measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) has been implemented for 30 years. METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to determine the mumps IgG antibody levels in sera collected from 429 individuals, including 224 men and 205 women. Participants were stratified into 3 age groups according to vaccination history (<20, 21-30, and >31 years). RESULTS…

Changes in age-specific seroprevalence of Japanese encephalitis virus and impact of Japanese encephalitis vaccine in Korea.

The Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable encephalitis in Asia. Since the introduction of a universal JE vaccination program and urbanization of Korea, the incidence of JE has dramatically decreased in Korea. However, recent JE cases have occurred, predominantly among unvaccinated adults and with a shift in age distribution. Here we aimed to review the changes in age-specific JE seroprevalence over time and discuss the implications of JE vaccination programs in Korea. Following the last epidemic in 1982-1983, mandatory vaccination for all children aged 3-…

Vaccination coverage estimates by EPI cluster sampling survey of children (18-24 months) in Flanders, Belgium.

UNLABELLED: A random cluster sample according to the EPI cluster sampling technique was conducted in 1999 in Flanders (North Belgium) to ascertain the vaccination coverage of 18 to 24-mo-old children. Polio is the only mandatory vaccine. Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP), Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), hepatitis B (HB) and measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) are included in the recommended schedule of vaccinations. For Hib and HB, a minimal cost was charged. Professional interviewers conducted interviews with the parents of 1110 children randomly selected in 89 municipalities. Analysis was cond

Estimation of seroconversion and vaccination impact against FMD in India during 2006-2022 using survey sampling and Bayesian approaches.

In India, the eligible bovine population has been subjected to mandatory biannual Foot-and-mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination since 2004–05 and year-round serosurveillance to control FMD. To evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccination-based control programme, post-vaccination seromonitoring has been implemented. Over time, key seromonitoring factors, including dilution, percentage inhibition, cut-offs, sampling design, and screening methods, have been modified as per the need, making it challenging to obtain a comprehensive and comparable assessment of seroconversion responses achieved through

Modelling the impact of a quadrivalent ACWY meningococcal vaccination and vaccination targeting serogroup B in France.

Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) represents a significant global health burden, with high fatality rate and substantial risk of lifelong sequelae. Most cases worldwide are caused by six serogroups (A, B, C, W, X, and Y). Effective vaccines are available to prevent disease caused by serogroups A, B, C, W, and Y. In France, approximately 500 IMD cases occur each year. Since the introduction of mandatory vaccination against serogroup C, the majority of IMD now involve serogroups B, W, and Y. Given these changes in the epidemiology of IMD, French National Authority for Health decided to recons…

Humoral immunity 10 years after booster immunization with an adolescent and adult formulation combined tetanus, diphtheria, and 5-component acellular pertussis vaccine in the USA.

BACKGROUND: In a prospective, randomized pivotal phase III clinical trial, the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of a tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) and a tetanus-diphtheria vaccine (Td) vaccine were studied in participants aged 11-64 years. Here we report antibody persistence through 10 years after vaccination. METHODS: Participants who received Tdap or Td in the original phase III trial and provided pre- and post-vaccination serum samples were recruited to donate sera at 1, 3, 5 and 10 years post-vaccination. Antibody concentrations were measured using standard assay

[Mumps in Poland in 2004].

In 2004, 135,179 cases of mumps were reported in Poland. The incidence (354.1 per 100,000) was higher compared to 2003 (228.7) and to the median incidence in 1999-2002 (75.0). The increase of mumps incidence in 2004 corresponds to natural fluctuations in the epidemic cycle, it is however delayed and lower compared to the previous peaks. This prolongation of epidemic cycle can be attributed to increasing vaccine coverage among 3 year old children (from 16.7% in 1999 to 48.5% in 2004). Mandatory vaccination of children aged 13-14 months with trivalent measles-mumps-rubella vaccine was implemente…

VACCINATION--COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY OR VIOLATION OF RIGHTS?

Vaccination is considered to be the most effective and the cheapest medical intervention through which individual and collective immunisation is achieved. Statistics show that, at present, immunisation annually saves 400 million lives and protects approximately 750,000 children against disabilities of varying degrees. Approximately 80% of worldwide children are vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, etc.; these diseases used to be considered incurable in the past. Vaccines help the body to produce antibodies; they help the immune system to detect germs and inactivat

Vaccinal status of healthcare students in Lille.

INTRODUCTION: Vaccine recommendations are the same for healthcare students than for other health care workers. The aim of this study was to describe mandatory and recommended vaccinal coverage and evaluate the benefit of systematic monitoring by a medical team in the Lille Medical School. POPULATION AND METHODS: A survey was performed from June 2011 to August 2011 on all students in the first year of Health Care Studies. The personal immunization record was considered as evidence of vaccination. The reference vaccinal schedule was the one recommended by the French High Council for Public Heal

Vaccines for the Elderly and Vaccination Programs in Europe and the United States.

The share of the elderly population is growing worldwide as life expectancy increases. Immunosenescence and comorbidities increase infectious diseases' morbidity and mortality in older adults. Here, we aimed to summarize the latest findings on vaccines for the elderly against herpes zoster, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), COVID-19, and pneumococcal disease and to examine vaccine recommendation differences for this age group in Europe and the United States. PubMed was searched using the keywords "elders" and "vaccine" alongside the disease/pathogen in question and paraphrased or s

Foot-and-mouth disease: genomic and proteomic structure, antigenic sites, serotype relationships, immune evasion, recent vaccine development strategies, and future perspectives.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious and transmissible disease that can have significant economic and trade repercussions during outbreaks. In Egypt, despite efforts to mitigate FMD through mandatory immunization, the disease continues to pose a threat due to the high genetic variability and quasi-species nature of the FMD virus (FMDV). Vaccines have been crucial in preventing and managing FMD, and ongoing research focusses on developing next-generation vaccines that could provide universal protection against all FMDV serotypes. This review thoroughly examines the genetic struct

Biological Rationale for the Repurposing of BCG Vaccine against SARS-CoV-2.

The Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine is still widely used in the developing world. The vaccination prevents infant death not only from tuberculosis but also from unrelated infectious agents, especially respiratory tract infections and neonatal sepsis. It is proposed that these off-target protective effects of the BCG vaccine are mediated by the general long-term boosting of innate immune mechanisms, also termed "trained innate immunity". Recent studies indicate that both COVID-19 incidence and total deaths are strongly associated with the presence or absence of national mandatory BCG vaccinati

Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) and prevention of types 1 and 2 diabetes: Results of two observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a common disease marked by high blood sugars. An earlier clinical trial in type 1 diabetic subjects (T1Ds) found that repeat BCG vaccinations succeeded in lowering HbA1c values over a multi-year course. Here we seek to determine whether BCG therapy for bladder cancer may improve blood sugar levels in patients with comorbid T1D and type 2 diabetes (T2D). We also investigate whether BCG exposure may reduce onset of T1D and T2D by examining country-by-country impact of BCG childhood vaccination policies in relation to disease incidence. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We first anal

Socioeconomic differences in childhood vaccination in developed countries: a systematic review of quantitative studies.

The reasons for vaccine hesitancy and its relation to individual socioeconomic status (SES) must be better understood. Areas covered: This review focused on developed countries with programs addressing major financial barriers to vaccination access. We systematically reviewed differences by SES in uptake of publicly funded childhood vaccines and in cognitive determinants (beliefs, attitudes) of parental decisions about vaccinating their children. Using the PRISMA statement to guide this review, we searched three electronic databases from January 2000 through April 2016. We retained 43 articles
