Malignant tumors in the oral cavity are relatively rare. About 5% of all malignant growths in the body are localized in the oral cavity. The vast majority of oral malignancies are primary tumors with squamous cell carcinoma being the most frequent and sarcomas occurring very seldom. Secondary tumors caused by hematogenous spread arising from a tumor localized elsewhere in the body are extremely rare. About 1% of all oral cancers are metastases to the jawbones and the surrounding soft tissues. Metastases to the jaws are mainly caused by malignant tumors of the breast, lung, kidney, bone, and co

This paper represents more than 30 years of discussion and collaboration with Drs Joseph Murray and John Mulliken in an attempt to understand growth patterns over time (ie, fourth dimension) in patients with hemifacial microsomia (HFM). This is essential for the development of rational treatment protocols for children and adults with jaw asymmetry. Traditionally, HFM was thought of as a unilateral deformity, but it was recognized that 20% to 30% of patients had bilateral abnormalities. However, early descriptions of skeletal correction addressed almost exclusively lengthening of the short (aff

Experience gained in repair of the mandibular condylar processes with titanium endoprostheses in 6 patients (8 endoprostheses) is presented. The defects were due to improperly healing fractures, ankylosis of the temporomandibular processes, and cancer. Two variants of endoprostheses differing by the fixing device are proposed. One variant is intended for replacement of defects of the condylar process only, the other permits the use of various titanium constructions to replace bone tissue defects in the branch, angle, and body of the jaw after its resection. Good immediate and late results (fol

Gorham disease, or massive osteolysis, is a rare condition of unknown etiology. The disease is characterized by spontaneous progressive osteolysis of 1 or more skeletal bones. The mandible is the most commonly involved bone in the maxillofacial region. This article reports a case of Gorham disease with mandibular involvement in a 46-year-old male patient with a 7-year follow-up. In this case, we performed lower right mandibular osteotomy and reconstruction with a phased titanium plate. Postoperative follow-up showed continued mandibular bone loss that was progressing to the contralateral mandi

Nerve repositioning is a viable alternative for patients with an atrophic edentulous posterior mandible. Patients, however, should be informed of the potential risks of neurosensory disturbance. Documentation of the patient's baseline neurosensory function should be performed with a two-point discrimination test or directional brush stroke test preoperatively and postoperatively. Recovery of nerve function should be expected in 3 to 6 months. The potential for mandibular fracture when combining nerve repositioning with implant placement also should be discussed with the patient. This can be av

Reconstruction of mandibular substance loss by a free flap is a widely used technique. This technique suffers from several disadvantages, including the presence of a second intervention site and a substantial frequency of complications. We have undertaken a custom-made 3-dimensional reconstruction (using computer-aided design and manufacturing) with prosthetic dental rehabilitation and esthetic improvement by lipomodeling of the face. A 50-year-old woman presented with a massive recurrence of an ameloblastoma of the right hemimandible. A cervical approach was used to resect the mandible well a

INTRODUCTION: Metastases involving the oral cavity account for 1% to 8% of all malignancies in the oral cavity Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is uncommon.
METHOD AND RESULTS: We conducted a review of the literature between 1954 and 2008 regarding metastases to the TMJ. In total, 48 patients were found and in 28 patients a previous history of malignant neoplasm was known. The primary tumor was most commonly found in the breast (34%), followed by the lung (21%). Adenocarcinoma was predominant (72.97%). Three new patients with TMJ pain as a first symptom for a disseminated tumo

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal experience demonstrates the existence of patients with superiorly located carotid stenosis, neoplasms, or aneurysms where the mandible obstructs effective surgical access using standard techniques. As carotid pathology extends anatomically beyond the limits of standard operative technique, additional exposure becomes paramount to safely and effectively address the lesion. Double mandibular osteotomy (DMO) is one of several techniques to obtain additional exposure to high-carotid pathology; however, there is no large series to address the outcomes of patients undergoing th

INTRODUCTION: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a myeloid dendritic cell neoplasm causing inflammation and tissue destruction. Clinical features vary from single bone involvement to a multi-system, life-threatening disease.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old presented with bilateral osteolytic lesions, advanced alveolar and basal bone loss, widened inferior alveolar canal, and displacement of tooth buds. Clinical findings revealed the presence of multiple ulcerative lesions on the gingival region of the mandibular posterior teeth, the palatal region of the maxillary posterior teeth, and the

INTRODUCTION: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm uncommon in adults.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in a rare location and in an adult. It concerns a 46-year-old woman with a mandibular location invading the parotid gland. The Immunohistochemical analysis revealed intense positivity for myogenin and desmin, favoring the diagnosis of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. The patient had a right hemi-mandibulectomy with parotidectomy and received chemotherapy with radiotherapy. The evolution was good up to 2 years postoperatively then the p

OBJECTIVE: Secretory carcinoma (SC) of salivary gland is a recently described low-grade malignant neoplasm of the salivary gland, characterized by rearrangement of the ETV6 gene. SC of salivary gland shares striking morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular similarity to SC of breast.
STUDY DESIGN: We report the clinicopathologic features of 4 ETV6-rearranged SCs of minor salivary gland and histopathologic diagnostic considerations.
RESULTS: Two cases were located in the lip, 1 in the soft palate, and 1 in the mandibular vestibule. No patient presented with regional or distant metastases

Reports of neoplasia in captive reptiles are becoming more frequent; however, there is still scarce knowledge of the occurrence of neoplasia in wild reptiles. A wild black rat snake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) was presented to the Zoological Medicine service of the University of Georgia's Veterinary Teaching Hospital with a 3 cm in diameter solid mandibular mass that was partially ulcerated. Radiographically, the mass was radiopaque with small bone spicules and partial osteolysis of the adjacent mandible. Histologic examination of the mass revealed a neoplasm composed of cuboidal to polygona

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that can create clinical problems in the masticatory musculature, jaws, occlusion, and other associated structures and is commonly accompanied by inflammatory changes and pain. Many cases of TMJ dysfunction can be managed with nonsurgical therapies, but patients with irreversible TMJ damage may require surgical intervention for repair or reconstruction. Despite various methods of TMJ reconstruction, the patient-fitted total joint prostheses may be the best option to achieve good outcomes. Multicystic ameloblastoma is a beni

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm that is characterized by a monoclonal proliferation of plasma cells. Oral and maxillofacial manifestations as an initial sign or symptom of multiple myeloma are rare. A 58-year-old male patient presented with generalized gingival enlargement for last 6 months. Based on clinical presentation, a diagnosis of gingival hyperplasia was made. After Phase I therapy, excisional biopsy was taken in anterior mandibular region and excised tissue was sent for histopathological examination. The histopathology report revealed a lining of stratified squamous epitheliu

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is an extremely rare, benign neoplasm, accounting for approximately 1% of all odontogenic tumors. Peripheral CEOTs commonly resemble oral hyperplastic or reactive lesions and are histologically similar to their intraosseous counterparts. We report an unusual case of multifocal peripheral CEOT. A 40-year-old female presented with bilateral soft, painful, erythematous, gingival swellings localized in premolar areas of the mandibular gingiva. The presumptive diagnosis was bilateral pyogenic granuloma. The masses were surgically excised under local an

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a common mucocutaneous manifestation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Primary bone lesions have been reported but are rare. A 38-year-old African-American male who was human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive appeared for the evaluation of an asymptomatic well-defined radiolucency of the mandibular midline discovered on routine radiographic examination. The adjacent central incisors were asymptomatic, nonmobile, and vital. The overlying mucosa and cortical plate were intact. Excision of the lesion revealed a fleshy, pink-red soft tissue mass with a unif

Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm predominantly affecting young females, characterized by replacement of normal bone with fibrous tissue containing mineralized material. While smaller lesions can be managed conservatively, extensive lesions require resection to minimize recurrence. We report a 27-year-old female presenting with a large ossifying fibroma involving the right mandibular ramus, angle, and body. Clinical examination revealed facial asymmetry with firm, non-tender swelling, and buccal cortical expansion. Computed tomography demonstrated a well-defined, expansile l
