Mandibular reconstruction using iliac bone and great auricular nerve grafts and oral rehabilitation using osseointegrated implants in a patient with a large ossifying fibroma: a 10-year follow-up study.

Ossifying fibromas are bone-related benign neoplasms that are characterized by well-demarcated lesions composed of fibrocellular tissue and mineralized material with varying appearances. Although small lesions are asymptomatic, they may cause enlargement of the affected jaw and rarely require reconstructive or restorative treatments for aesthetic and functional problems. In this study, we report a 35-year-old woman who underwent multidisciplinary treatment for a large ossifying fibroma of the mandible. A segmental mandibular resection was performed, and immediate reconstruction was performed u

[Oligodontia with prosthodontic rehabilitation. A case report].

Oligodontia or partial anodontia is the congenital absence of one or more teeth. The inconvenience to patients will vary depending on the specific teeth and the number of teeth that are missing. Permanent teeth are often involved. This report describes an oligodontia case in a 12 years old boy, who had only seven permanent teeth, with root resorption of all remaining deciduous teeth. This boy had problems with esthetics, mastication, and phonation. The prosthesis for him included two splinted porcelain crowns on the upper certral incisors, a conventional maxillary RPD, and a overlayed mandibul

[The anatomy of the maxillary and mandibular retromolar area. Effect on complete dentures. 1. The retrotuberosity space].

Located at the border between vestibule and palatine area, the retrotuberosity space plays a major role in full dentures, as it involves the lateral portion of the posterior palatine joint. The arrangement of the pterygo-maxillary complex determines the morphology of this space and its use in full prosthesis. In most cases, the pterygo-mandibular ligament originates at a distance of the tuberosity, leaving a small mucosal fold, posterior to the tuberosity. This element, often mistaken with the origin of the ligament, should neither be released at the prosthetic border, nor be considered as a n

CAD/CAM and rapid prototyped titanium for reconstruction of ramus defect and condylar fracture caused by mandibular reduction.

Fracture or defect of the mandible is a serious complication of mandibular angleplasty, and precise reconstruction for such defect is still a huge challenge. This case report provides a new method based on CAD/CAM and rapid prototyped titanium for individual design, fabrication, and implantation of a mandibular ramus and angle. A 25-year-old woman with a square-shaped face, who had undergone mandibular outer cortex split ostectomy (MOCSO) 3 months earlier, was afflicted by a series of symptoms: asymmetric face, collapse of the right face, masticatory problems, deviation during mouth opening, m

New hope for Treacher-Collins syndrome: a surgical case report.

The objective of this case report is to discuss the possibility of developing a surgical treatment paradigm for patients with some of the noted characteristics of Treacher-Collins syndrome, mainly mandibular ankylosis and/or retrognathia (mandibular retrusion), in a way that would provide lasting, predictable results and minimize the frequently seen mandibular ankylosis. Through various medical imaging techniques, mainly computed tomography (CT) scan, the radiology imaging technologist produces accurate CT scan images of the particular patient's osseous cranial structures. These images can the

Evaluation of periodontal changes following intra-alveolar prosthesis for maxillary cheek tooth extraction in ponies.

This study investigated the placement of an intra-alveolar prosthesis of bone substitute on gingival/periodontal health in 5 ponies following repulsion of cheek teeth 108 and 208. In each pony, one randomly chosen alveolus was allowed to heal by second intention while the other was filled with a non-resorbable, biocompatible bone substitute. At 6, 12 and 24-months after surgery, both maxillary arches were evaluated for wear abnormalities and for gingival health using a periodontal scoring system. Recorded changes included development of overgrowths on mandibular cheek teeth, widening of maxill

Prosthetic Rehabilitation With a Tooth-Supported Overdenture Utilizing Ball Attachments and a Customized Intraoral Tracer: A Case Report.

The preservation of the residual ridge remains a fundamental objective in prosthodontic rehabilitation, particularly following tooth extraction. Retaining two or more natural teeth as abutments facilitates effective management of partially edentulous arches. Tooth-supported overdentures, as part of preventive prosthodontics, aid in conserving natural teeth, preserving proprioception, and minimizing alveolar bone resorption. Additionally, establishing a balanced occlusion further enhances denture stability and reduces ridge resorption. A 60-year-old male patient presented with difficulty in mas

[Condylar reconstruction after resection of an intracapsular stomach carcinoma metastasis].

BACKGROUND: The mandible is a very uncommon place for a metastasis of a gastric carcinoma. Normally the area of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) remains unaffected. The separate vascularization is discussed as one reason among others. Primary reconstruction after resection of the condyle is often problematic because an early onset of adjuvant systemic therapy is required. In this case, the insertion of a Quinn joint prosthesis is presented after resection of a TMJ metastasis. CASE: We report a hematogenic metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma in a 51-year old male who initially presented with in

Left Mandibular Pain: A Rare Initial Symptom of Acute Aortic Dissection Without Coronary Obstruction.

An 88-year-old woman experienced sharp pain in the left mandible for a few minutes 3 days prior to hospital presentation. On the day of hospital presentation, the patient experienced similar pain and cold sweating for more than an hour early in the morning. On arrival, there was only mild discomfort ranging from the left mandible to the neck, without definite pain. Computed tomography revealed Stanford type A acute aortic dissection. Blood vessel prosthesis implantation was performed. Intraoperatively, the coronary arteries were confirmed to be intact. Mandibular pain is a rare but potential s

Computational models and their applications in biomechanical analysis of mandibular reconstruction surgery.

Advanced head and neck cancers involving the mandible often require surgical removal of the diseased parts and replacement with donor bone or prosthesis to recreate the form and function of the premorbid mandible. The degree to which this reconstruction successfully replicates key geometric features of the original bone critically affects the cosmetic and functional outcomes of speaking, chewing, and breathing. With advancements in computational power, biomechanical modeling has emerged as a prevalent tool for predicting the functional outcomes of the masticatory system and evaluating the effe

Intraoral EBV-positive sporadic Burkitt lymphoma in an elderly patient with bilateral presentation.

Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma (SBL) is a variant of Burkitt lymphoma that occurs worldwide, affecting mainly children and young adults. Association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can be identified in approximately 20-30% of cases. Herein we described a case of a 63-year-old male presenting intraoral bilateral mandibular swelling, subjacent to fixed dental prosthesis, with one month of duration. Incisional biopsies were performed, and after two days, the patient was hospitalized due to malaise and breathing difficulty, and died after a week when an abdominal tumor was detected. The mandibular biopsi
