INTRODUCTION: A 51-year-old woman was diagnosed with a rare case of multi-focal ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast associated with Poland syndrome.
CLINICAL PICTURE: Physical examination showed mild hypoplasia of the left breast with microcalcifications on mammogram. Intraoperatively, there was complete absence of the pectoralis major, which precluded the insertion of a breast implant.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: She underwent a skin-sparing mastectomy and autologous microsurgical free flap reconstruction with deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap. Postoperative recovery was

The main goal of an open biopsy in the breast is directed towards confirmation or exclusion of suspected cancer. The curved incision parallel to the areolar line must allow excision of the tumor completely. Persisting isolated lumps should be extirpated even if by all other diagnostic means they seem to be benign. Cases of pathologic secretion (tumors, suspicious cytology, significant galactography, abundant secretion) need surgical intervention as well. The clinical value of homologue biopsies taken from the contralateral breast in cases of breast cancer on one side is questionable.

Patients undergoing various plastic surgical procedures on their breasts were studied before and after operations with respect to sensation from crude touch, light pressure, and pain. The more extensive the operation on the breast (the more skin and breast tissue removed) the greater the postoperative decrease in sensation. Reduction mammaplasty and subcutaneous mastectomy were associated with decreased sensation in a significant number of patients. An unexpected finding was that patients having augmentation mammaplasty by either the inframammary or areola route showed a significant decrease i

Background. With <40 case reports published in the English literature, mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the breast is quite rare compared to its counterparts in the ovary, pancreas, and appendix. The purpose of this case report is to enrich scientific data by sharing the clinicopathological features of this new and extremely rare entity and present possible difficulties encountered in the biopsy materials. Case Report. A 34-year-old female patient presented with the complaint of white discharge from her left nipple lasting 8 months. Physical and radiological examination of the patient revealed a

The profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap has become an important option in breast reconstruction, particularly for patients with prior abdominal surgery, insufficient abdominal tissue, or those who prefer to avoid abdominal scars. Despite its advantages, the PAP flap may be limited by insufficient volume relative to the size of the mastectomy defect. We present the case of a 64-year-old woman with scleroderma and a body mass index of 20.9 kg/m² who was diagnosed with right breast cancer. She underwent a nipple-sparing mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy, followed by immediate reconstruc

Mastectomy is a common surgical treatment used in the management of breast cancer but has associated physical and psychological consequences for the patient. Breast conservation surgery (BCS) is an alternative to mastectomy but is only possible when the tumour is of an appropriate size. Neo-adjuvant chemotherapy has been successfully used to downstage tumours and increase the number of patients eligible for BCS. However, the chemotherapies used in this approach are non-targeted and often result in significant side effects to the patient. In this manuscript, we evaluate the potential of ultraso

Physical examination and mammography are currently the only proven and reliable methods of early detection of breast cancer. Although both procedures are highly sensitive, their limited specificity often requires surgical biopsy in order to differentiate between malignant and benign lesions. The purpose of this prospective study is to investigate the diagnostic specificity of thallium imaging for breast cancer and to determine its efficacy as a complement to mammography. Two groups were studied: Group A: Patients found to have breast abnormalities and scheduled for biopsy or surgery and Group

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated and compared the perioperative outcomes and quality of life associated with modified radical mastectomy (MRM), breast-conserving surgery (BCS), and nipple- and areola-sparing subcutaneous mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction (NSM-IBR).
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 105 patients with breast cancer, stratified into MRM (n = 35), BCS (n = 35), and NSM-IBR (n = 35) groups. The perioperative outcomes (operative times, intraoperative blood loss, and recent complications) were subsequently compared across the 3 groups. Differences in pa

Breast male cancer is a rare condition. We report a case of a synchronous bilateral ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) which developed in a 26-year-old man with long-standing gynecomastia. He underwent bilateral subcutaneous mastectomy. Histology revealed bilateral pure DCIS. There was no identifiable causative factor for the development of bilateral DCIS, and there was no family history of the disease. No other treatment was required, and after 18 months there were no signs of local recurrence. This case highlights the importance of staying vigilant regarding the presence of malignancy in normal

BACKGROUND: This study revisits previously described skin-reducing mastectomy and dermal flap-muscle pocket techniques for immediate breast reconstruction in large, drooping breasts. Compared to techniques previously described in the literature, combining TiLOOP Bra improved the quality of implant coverage, enhanced the esthetic outcome, and allowed for the use of larger implant volumes. Subjects and Methods The study was conducted at three centers in China. It included patients with large sagging breasts with a bra cup size D or larger. Patients had an areola-to-inframammary fold distance of

Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTIs) are life-threatening infections that most commonly affect the extremities, perineum, and abdominal wall. These infections begin with the presence of toxin-producing bacteria that invade through a defect in the skin barrier, such as a wound, laceration, trauma, or recent surgical incision. These bacteria cause subsequent tissue destruction and necrosis that can involve the superficial skin, subcutaneous tissue, fascia, and/or muscle. NSTIs can progress quickly, leading to severe sepsis, shock, and even death. NSTIs associated with the breast are an exc

Gestational gigantomastia (GGM) is a rare condition characterized by a massive overgrowth of breast tissue during pregnancy. Surgical sanction may be required when conservative measures fail. In this study, we report the case of a 29-year-old woman who presented with an evolutive GGM responsible for physical and emotional distress, despite medical treatment. A multidisciplinary decision was made to induce delivery at 32 weeks. In the postdelivery period, the patient developed breast wounds, complicated with septic cardiomyopathy. An emergency bilateral mastectomy was then carried out, together

1. Preinvasive phases of the cancer of the breast are observed with the intraductal cancers of the bigger ducts and with the so-called lobular carcinoma in situ. It shows, however, that the carcinoma of the ducts, above all the comedo-carcinoma, have to be considered as invasive cancers in more than 75%. These forms extend to the lobuli of the breast. 2. The Morbus Paget bases in one third on an intraductal preinvasive carcinoma, in two thirds on an invasive cancer. 3. This chapter deals with the differential diagnosis of the papilloma and papillary carcinoma. 4. Intralobular proliferations of

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer-related death among North American and Western European women. Recent progress in understanding the genetic basis of breast cancer, along with rising incidence rates, have resulted in increased interest in prophylactic mastectomy as a method of preventing breast cancer, particularly in those with familial susceptibility.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to determine whether prophylactic mastectomy reduces death from any cause in women who have never had breast cancer and in women who have a his

INTRODUCTION: Current recommendations preconize prophylactic mastectomy for women over 30 with increased risk of breast cancer. Several surgical techniques are available to perform bilateral mastectomy with or without breast reconstruction. Our primary objective was to evaluate the feasibility of the Endoscopic Nipple Sparing Mastectomy (E-NSM) technique, without robotic assistance, using a single axillary incision and with immediate reconstruction using a prepectoral prosthesis in prophylactic indications. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the risks of postoperative complications and

Symptomatic occlusion of the subclavian artery is a rare complication of radiation therapy for carcinoma of the breast. The first case of revascularization of this entity using saphenous vein was described in 1974. A total of only 24 patients have been reported in the English literature, of whom 14 have undergone successful arterial reconstruction. Three additional cases of occlusion of the subclavian artery 27, 18 and 7 years after radical mastectomy and postoperative radiotherapy are reported. These patients presented with pain, coldness, paresthesia and absence of pulses in the affected arm

Melanoma may arise in association with and/or simulate the appearance of a cellular blue nevus. The distinction of a cellular blue nevus with atypical features from blue nevus-like melanoma can be difficult. One rare setting, in which one may face this diagnostic challenge, is nodule formation in a large plaque-type blue nevus. We have previously reported 2 patients with cellular blue nevus-like subcutaneous nodules without overt malignant features and indolent clinical behavior. Herein we report a patient who developed malignant melanoma in association with a large plaque-type blue nevus. A 4
