Reconstruction of the atrophic maxilla in a young adult presents unique challenges. This article describes reconstruction in a 30-year-old patient using a two-stage procedure. Bilateral maxillary sinus augmentations with simultaneous corticocancellous grafting to the anterior maxilla and alveolar ridge were performed. Eight endosseous implant fixtures were subsequently placed into the maxilla after a five-month healing phase. Six months later the implants were uncovered, healing abutments placed and a maxillary vestibuloplasty performed. The rationale behind this treatment and a review of the …

The congenital teeth are not only classified by Massler et al. as a natal tooth that has erupted at birth and a neonatal tooth that erupts at neonatal period, but also divided into a normal deciduous tooth and a supernumerary tooth. The congenital teeth are mostly found in the mandibular anterior region, but extremely rare in other regions. The authors met a rare case, that had a so-called congenital tooth in the maxillary anterior region, which was a supernumerary and fused tooth. The case was a boy patient, 4 months of age, who visited the pedodontic clinic, of Ohu University Dental Hospital…

Technical features for surgical correction of long face with gaps are presented. The importance of clinical examination is emphasized, this localizing the site of the malformation, teleradiography and study of molds providing details of the deformities. Treatment stages were preoperative orthodontal therapy, followed by ascension surgery to maxilla and retraction surgery to mandible. Different surgical procedures for obtaining maxillary ascension re discussed. Combining preoperative orthodontal therapy with surgery at the site of deformities produced very satisfactory, long lasting, functional…

Aneurysmal cysts of the mandible and maxilla are rare conditions, though not exceptional, which are seen in particular in the child and adolescent. A part from facial asymmetry and tumefaction, it is rare to find other clinical manifestations. No neurological signs were seen in the present study. An aneurysmal cyst gives a radiological appearance of non-characteristic lysis compatible with a large range of diagnoses. Histological study permits early diagnosis but must always involve the whole specimen with careful examination to detect any other associated lesion. The pathogenesis of the condi…

Fibrous dysplasia, a rare skeletal disorder marked by replacement of normal bone with fibrous tissue and disorganized woven bone, most commonly affects the craniofacial region. Although craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (CFD) typically progresses slowly and remains asymptomatic, it can occasionally give rise to complications. The authors report a unique case of an intralesional abscess within maxillary CFD in an 88-year-old man presenting with acute facial pain and swelling. Computed tomography revealed a fluid-filled cavity within the maxillary CFD lesion. Surgical drainage was performed using a…

A 53-year-old female with a history of childhood craniofacial fibrous dysplasia presented with several months of right periorbital pain, hyperglobus, and a palpable cheek mass. Imaging suggested malignant transformation of the maxillary tumor, and endoscopic endonasal biopsy confirmed malignant transformation to osteosarcoma. Guanine nucleotide-binding protein, alpha stimulating ( GNAS )-activating mutation confirmed the fibrous dysplasia origin. The patient underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy, right total maxillectomy and free flap reconstruction, postoperative chemotherapy and radiation, and …

Malakoplakia is a rare inflammatory disorder which typically occurs in immunocompromised patients secondary to impaired bactericidal activity of macrophages. While this entity commonly arises in the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts, lesions of the head and neck have been reported only rarely, with oral cavity involvement reported in 3 cases. The most common presentation of head and neck malakoplakia is that of a cutaneous flesh-colored papule or nodule. This case report, however, illustrates the first time malakoplakia is identified affecting the maxilla and maxillary alveolar ridge m…

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic leiomyosarcomas make up around 8.6% of all leiomyosarcomas. They behave aggressively and often have poor prognoses. They can affect the gastrointestinal tract and retroperitoneum. To date, pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma involving the mesocolon have been reported in nine patients.
CASE SUMMARY: The patient was a 44-year-old man with a history of pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma of the left maxilla with metastasis to the lung and liver. His most recent positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) scan showed uptake in the ascending and transverse colons. A colonoscopy…

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) in the maxilla are rare. Although destructive, their clinical presentation can mimic inflammatory conditions like radicular cysts and osteomyelitis. OKCs originate primarily from odontogenic sources. On radiography, they present a unilocular to multilocular radiolucency and may involve the maxillary sinus. Enucleation with chemical cauterization is the best treatment for limiting cyst recurrence. However, superaided infections, such as fungal sinusitis, can adversely affect the condition and require a more comprehensive treatment plan. The present case report des…

Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous lesion arising from the periodontal ligament cells. The lesion may progressively enlarge with the mass affecting the mandible or maxilla, resulting in facial deformities and tooth displacement despite its benign nature. Here, we presented a case of an 18-year-old female with ossifying fibroma in the maxilla extending to the maxillary sinus, infraorbital area, and skull base, resulting in considerable facial asymmetry. Since the primary treatment of ossifying fibroma is surgical resection, it is essential to determine the areas where the lesion has ex…

A central odontogenic fibroma is a rare benign tumor composed of mature fibrous connective tissue with variable amounts of odontogenic epithelium. It appears at similar rates in the maxilla and mandible. In the maxilla, it usually occurs anterior to the molars. Radiographically, central odontogenic fibroma commonly presents as a multilocular or unilocular radiolucency with a distinct border. This paper reports a case of an aggressive central odontogenic fibroma involving the right posterior maxilla of a 53-year-old man. Radiographs showed an extensive soft tissue mass involving the entire righ…
