OBJECTIVES: To investigate the prevalence, location, size and course of the anastomosis between the dental branch of the posterior superior alveolar artery (PSAA), known as alveolar antral artery (AAA), and the infraorbital artery (IOA).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The first part of the study was performed on 30 maxillary sinuses deriving from 15 human cadaver heads. In order to visualize such anastomosis, the vascular network afferent to the sinus was injected with liquid latex mixed with green India ink through the external carotid artery. The second part of the study consisted of 100 CT scans fr…

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of maxillary sinus floor on the mesial movement of maxillary first molar.
METHODS: Orthodontic patients with maxillary first premolars extracted were selected. Their maxillary first molars were divided into case group and control group according to whether their roots were in contact with the maxillary sinus floor. The case group was further divided into three subtypes according to the depth of the root extruded into the maxillary sinus. A total of 64 maxillary first molars from 32 patients were enrolled in this study, including 34 in the case group (five in…

Paranasal sinus mucoceles are benign, locally expansile cyst-like masses that are filled with mucus and lined with epithelium. Less than one per cent of them involve the maxillary sinus. Most of these are late complications of a Caldwell Luc procedure. A case is presented of a 31-year-old woman with a maxillary sinus mucocele who had undergone a Le Fort I maxillary advancement procedure 15 years previously - a complication never previously reported.

Chronic maxillary sinusitis is a common condition. The disease is most often caused by blockage of the sinus ostia or presence of an oroantral fistula. We report two cases of unilateral chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus. In the first case the foreign body consisted of dental amalgam, in the second case of two silastic sponges left behind from a former operation because of "blowout" fracture. In the case of benign chronic maxillary sinusitis and foreign bodies, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) preceded by a CT-scan is an excellent approa…

Cultures obtained from the middle meatus have been used frequently in the past to direct therapy in patients with acute maxillary sinusitis. However, no convincing data have been published to indicate that middle meatal cultures accurately represent the bacterial flora within the maxillary sinus. The hypothesis of this experiment is that bacteria obtained by directed middle meatal cultures qualitatively and quantitatively correlate with cultures taken by maxillary sinus puncture. Acute sinusitis was induced by injecting 10(8) colony-forming units of bacteria directly into the maxillary sinuses…

Chronic inflammatory diseases of the maxillary sinus can present well-defined, expansile radiolucent features, necessitating differential diagnosis from true neoplasms. Pleomorphic adenoma, although rare, is one of the neoplasms included in the list of differential diagnoses, and it may occasionally arise in the maxillary sinus. However, inflammatory conditions such as mucoceles, postoperative maxillary cysts and chronic bacterial maxillary sinusitis can also cause thinning and expansion of the sinus walls due to prolonged obstruction. The present study describes a case of chronic maxillary si…

Knowledge of the anatomical relationships between the maxillary sinus (MS) and posterior teeth is important to prevent complications when endodontic or oral surgical procedures are performed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the root apices of maxillary posterior teeth and the MS floor. Three oral radiologists evaluated 851 posterior teeth (1969 roots) imaged with cone beam computed tomography. The roots were analyzed individually in parasagittal sections, on which the most superior point of the apex was observed. A qualitative evaluation was performed, and each …
