Malignant neoplasms of the mucosa and minor salivary glands of the paranasal sinuses may involve the skin by direct extension. When a tumor appears on the overlying skin, these sinuses should be considered as a possible site of origin. Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses arise from minor salivary glands. They can infiltrate overlying skin and easily be confused with a primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma. Malignant melanomas of the paranasal sinuses are clinically very aggressive. They are often amelanotic, and this may lead to an incorrect histopathologic diagnosis. Hence,

Several emerging sinonasal malignancies have recently been described in the pathology literature. Although not all distinctly classified by the World Health Organization, these rare tumors present a management challenge to surgeons and oncologists. While prior studies have summarized histologic details, a clinically focused review is currently lacking in the literature. This review describes the presentation, histopathology, imaging, treatment, and prognosis of newly described or recently evolving sinonasal malignancies while highlighting the distinguishing features of these entities. It inclu

Treatment of cancer of the antrum and nasopharynx often includes the radiation of tissues close to an uninvolved eye. One treatment method consists of using an anterior high energy X ray beam directed to the tumor through the eye. To maintain a high dose adjacent to and behind the eye while reducing the entrance dose to the eye, build-up material is placed on the skin and a tunnel cut through to the eye. When the build-up material is tissue-like, the tunnel can be several centimeters in height and scattered radiation from the tunnel walls will largely offset the build-up properties of the beam

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) are a group of neoplasms that originate from the cells of the lymphoreticular system. Forty percent of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma arises from extranodal sites. The nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses are rarely affected by primary NHL. Common primary extranodal sites of lymphomas include stomach, liver, soft tissue, dura, bone, intestine and bone marrow. Most patients present with rapidly enlarging masses, often with symptoms both locally and systemically (fever, recurrent night sweats, or weight loss). The vast majority of patients with localized disease are curable

Organizing hematomas occur in many locations and simulate neoplasms. They all have similar structure, with a central mass of blood, a wall of granulation tissue, and dense, fibrous tissue at the periphery. There have been sporadic reports of organizing hematoma not only in soft tissue but also in brain, adrenal gland, lung and maxillary sinus. We report a case of nontraumatic head and neck organizing hematoma---one that occurred in the parapharyngeal space (PPS), a site that has not been previously reported. By doing so, since idiopathic organizing hematoma may occur, we hope to promote awaren

Neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells results in a population of immunologically homogeneous cells that can produce diffuse (multiple myeloma) or localized (extramedullary plasmacytomas and solitary plasmacytoma of bone) disease. In otorhinolaryngologic literature these neoplasms are rarely described and their nosological arrangement is often confused. The presence of a plasma cell neoplasm can be a surprise and sometimes a diagnostic challenge to the head and neck surgeon. Proper management of such lesions needs to be individualized according to their expected biologic behaviour. The recen

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss and review the role for elective treatment of the neck in maxillary squamous cell carcinoma. Improvements in survival have been seen because of improved local therapies and control; therefore, the treatment of the neck has become a topic of debate.
RECENT FINDINGS: The risk of occult metastases in neck nodes is higher for T3-4 tumors. The rate of nodal relapse in the N0 neck without elective treatment is 8-15%. With elective irradiation the nodal relapse rate decreases. However, most nodal relapses are accompanied by local failure or distant disease. Local failur

Unusual presentation of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxillary antrum. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare tumour which affects mainly the major and accessory salivary glands. It is an aggressive neoplasm characterized by early neural invasion and a high incidence of local recurrence and distant metastases, which may develop years after the initial resection. Surgery followed by radiotherapy seems to be the best treatment. Based on a well-illustrated case of extensive maxillary ACC involving the palate, orbit floor, and pterygo-palatine fossa, we discuss the prognosis and the importanc

Symptoms at first onset and on initial examination were analyzed in 845 patients with maxillary sinus carcinoma. About 20-30 per cent of the patients became aware of swelling of cheek, nasal obstruction, nasal discharge and epistaxis as first symptoms. About 50-80 per cent of the patients complained of such symptoms on initial examination. Symptoms of maxillary sinus carcinoma are similar to those of chronic sinusitis which results in a delay in diagnosis. Such symptoms should be recognized to improve survival rate. CT and MRI scans are useful for early diagnosis and determination of tumour ex

The sinonasal tract in general and the maxillary antrum in particular are uncommon sites for primary or metastatic tumors. Recently a woman had severe left posterior epistaxis. Hemorrhagic thyroid tissue was in the left maxillary sinus. The patient also had roentgenographic and scintigraphic evidence suggestive of thyroid tissue in her lungs and spine. Sixteen years previously she had undergone a partial lobectomy for a thyroid tumor. Reports of metastatic thyroid carcinoma in the maxillary, ethmoid, or sphenoid sinuses apparently have not appeared previously in the literature. Thyroid carcino

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical feature, diagnostic and therapeutic methods of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor(IMT).
METHOD: One case of IMT was reported and the relevant literatures were reviewed.
RESULT: The computed tomography scan showed irregular soft tissue density shade and aggressive bone destruction with unclear boundary. Pathological findings showed variable numbers of inflammatory cells and myofibroblastic spindle cells. Tumor cells were immunoreactive for vimentin and smooth muscle actin, but negative for desmin et al.
CONCLUSION: IMT of the maxillary sinus is very rar

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare malignant plasma cell tumour. We report an extremely aggressive case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the right maxillary sinus, which had metastasised to the brain and rib. A 56-year-old man presented with recurrent epistaxis and acute anaemia. Nasendoscopy revealed a medialised medial wall of the right maxilla and a mass occupying the whole nasopharynx. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right maxillary tumour with extension to the ipsilateral nasal cavity, nasopharynx, right sphenoid and ethmoidal sinuses. There was an extra-axial brain metastasis.

INTRODUCTION: Maxillary sinus osteomas are rare benign tumours with a poorly documented clinical evolution. Their craniofacial localization may be part of a syndrome. We report a case of maxillary sinus osteoma associated to a mucocele and a cyst probably of dental origin, with no sign of associated Gardner syndrome.
CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old woman consulted for chronic maxillary sinusitis and an oral vestibular fistula. The CT-scan suggested a mucocele with reactive bone formation. Macroscopically, a pediculated bone tumour was found next to a mucocele, and to a cyst probably of dental orig

The TNM staging of maxillary sinus cancer was stipulated by the UICC in 1987 using Ohngren line of demarcation. This report is to discuss the applicability of this staging based on 232 cases of maxillary sinus cancer treated in this hospital. Of 232 cases, the 3-year survival rate for those who received surgery alone was 4/6, for those after radical irradiation, 15.6% (20/128) and for those by combined irradiation and surgery, 43.9% (43/98). The 3-year survival rate for the whole series was 28.9%. To analyze the survival rates of different types of lesion separately, we found that those with i

An angiosarcoma involving the right frontal and maxillary sinuses in a nine-year-old Thoroughbred mare was studied post mortem by light and electron microscopy. Important diagnostic features included malignant endothelial cells lining ill-defined vascular spaces, supported by other vasoformative elements. Rhabdomyoblasts were also found. The tumour is apparently rarely seen in the nasal passages of the horse.

BACKGROUND: Paranasal sinus cancer comprises a group of neoplasms with low incidence but high aggressiveness, due to their anatomical location in the center of the face and the significant sequelae caused by both the disease and its treatment. Surgery for maxillary sinus neoplasms is considered potentially curative in early stages; however, maxillectomy is a procedure that requires a high level of surgical skill and represents a challenge for oncologic surgeons.
OBJECTIVE: To describe overall survival and the outcomes of surgical treatment based on maxillectomy, either as a standalone procedu…
