Marble bone disease: a review of osteopetrosis and its oral health implications for dentists.

Osteopetrosis is one cause of osteosclerosis and may result in such serious oral complications as osteomyelitis and exposed necrotic bone. Dentists should be aware of patients with the disease because of its effect on osteoclast function, which results in impaired wound healing. The purpose of this paper is to review the causes, pathogenesis and differential diagnosis of osteopetrosis and to provide guidance to dentists on the management of patients with osteopetrosis.

Bilateral bifid condyles: A rare etiology of temporomandibular joint disorders.

Background: Bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) is a rare etiology of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders characterized by a duplication of the head of the mandibular condyle.Case report: The authors report the case of a 20-year-old patient complaining of a painful and clicking TMJ and mandibular hypomobility, which had been progressing for several months. Radiological investigations (dental panoramic radiograph and X-ray CT scan) revealed right and left abnormalities of the TMJ due to bilateral BMC requiring surgical management. Conclusion: Despite a prevalence of 0.31% to 1.82% and the controv

[Traumatic ulceration of the tongue in an infant].

A 6-month-old baby was referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon due to an ulcer that had not healed. The diagnosis was Riga-Fede. The disease is also known as traumatic oral granuloma and is characterized by traumatic ulcerations on the tongue or lower lip. The lesions are caused by repeated trauma of the mucous membrane by emerging teeth in infants, especially the lower incisors. Early recognition of the disease is important because it has been associated with neurological abnormalities. A delayed or incorrect diagnosis or inadequate therapy can result in permanent deformity of the tongu

Dental findings and muscular-skeletal features in Schwartz-Jampel syndrome: case report of two affected siblings.

Schwartz-Jampel syndrome (SJS) is a rare, inherited disorder defined by myotonia, skeletal malformations, muscular stiffness, and growth retardation. The clinical signs and symptoms of SJS are seen in the maxillofacial region. The combination of skeletal and muscular abnormalities predisposes affected individuals to a number of primary and secondary orodental manifestations. Although several studies have discussed the clinical features of SJS from a medical perspective, few reports have addressed the oral findings or dental treatment in children and adolescents with the disorder. [Craniofacial malformations in prenatal ultrasound evaluation. Literature review].

Fetal face is the key anatomical location, both psychologically and clinically for the mother and the clinician. Ultrasound prenatal examina … llenges connected with 2D and 3D ultrasound imaging cause frequent misdiagnoses in early gestation. Maxillofacial abnormalities can be solitary or they can coexist with other abnormalities or syndromes. In case of detecting a facial defect, a precise and thorough ultrasound of whole fetal body is necessary whereas in case of detecting any fetal body abnormality a precise and …

Early oral sensory experiences and feeding development in children with CHARGE syndrome: a report of five cases.

Children with CHARGE syndrome commonly experience feeding and swallowing problems. Difficulties may be associated with congenital structural anomalies, motor impairment, and/or oral sensory impairment. For many children with CHARGE syndrome, the introduction of functional oral feeding is delayed and there are often long-term feeding complications. Oral aversion or defensiveness is a frequent serious issue; however, it is uncertain whether this is a primary sensory disorder or secondary to delayed and/or negative oral sensory and feeding experiences. This article examines in detail the early or

Investigation of maxillofacial morphology and oral characteristics with Turner syndrome and early mixed dentition.

Turner syndrome is associated with an X chromosome abnormality in women and is characterized by infantilism, congenital webbed neck, and cubitus valgus. The aim of this study was to determine the maxillofacial morphology and oral characteristics of Japanese girls (mean age, 8.5 years) with Turner syndrome and early mixed dentition. Lateral cephalograms obtained at the first visit were used to analyze maxillofacial morphology. Oral characteristics were identified using orthopantomograms, intraoral photographs, and study casts. All patients received growth hormone. Lateral cephalograms showed a

Dental findings and rehabilitation in familial osteodysplasia (Anderson type): a case report.

Familial osteodysplasia is a disorder of osteogenesis with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance which predominantly affects facial bones. No recent case had been reported, particularly from a dental point of view since the syndrome was first described by Anderson et al (JAMA 1972;220:1687-93). A 23-year-old male with familial osteodysplasia was presented in maxillofacial and dental aspects with clinical and radiological manifestations including malocclusion, abnormal teeth alignment, impacted teeth, shape disturbances including uncompleted coronal formation, root shortening with bulbo

Radiographic patterns of multiple myeloma in the jawbones of patients treated with intravenous bisphosphonates.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether intravenous (IV) bisphosphonate (BP) therapy can change the radiographic patterns of multiple myeloma (MM) in the jawbones. METHODS: The authors evaluated panoramic radiographs obtained from 188 patients with MM for the presence of solitary osteolytic lesions, multiple osteolytic lesions, diffuse osteoporosis, diffuse sclerosis, lamina dura abnormalities, nonhealing alveolar sockets, and bone sequestration. The authors compared results obtained from patients treated with IV BPs with those obtained from patients who had never been e

Augmentation of the infraorbital rim in orthognathic surgery.

Mid-face augmentation via a Le Fort I osteotomy is a commonly performed operation. Advancement of the upper jaw and associated structures (nose, lower cheek areas) can certainly improve function as well as facial aesthetics and harmony. Often, in patients with severe mid-face deficiency, hypoplasia of the maxilla extends all the way up to the infraorbital rims. The receding infraorbital rim contributes to the negative vector of the globes. In patients with this level of mid-face hypoplasia, while advancing the maxilla at the Le Fort I level satisfies all of the requirements for orthognathic su

Airway management using submental intubation in head and neck surgery.

In 1995 the first tracheosubmental intubation (TSI) in Poland was performed in the Clinic and De- partment of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at Jagiellonian University Medical College in Kraków. Our 20 years of experience with using TSI in the eld of cranio-maxillofacial surgery, with 316 successfully performed intubations, resulted in one of the largest bodies of material analysed in the literature so far. The aim of this study was to evaluate the eficacy and complications of TSI in the field of cranio-maxillofacial surgery in patients where orotracheal or nasotracheal intubation is contraindic

Systemic and maxillofacial characteristics of 11 Japanese children with Russell-Silver syndrome.

Russell-Silver syndrome (RSS) is a congenital anomaly characterized by intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation, typical facial features, fifth-finger clinodactyly, and skeletal asymmetry. Although data on intrauterine and postnatal growth retardation have been reported, there are few reports concerning the typical maxillofacial morphology in individuals with RSS. The aim of this study was to describe the details of this systemic condition and to characterize maxillofacial morphology based on cephalograms in 11 Japanese patients (age range, 3.9-12.0 years) with RSS. All 11 individuals had

Postprocessing in Maxillofacial Multidetector Computed Tomography.

Multidetector computed tomography (CT) and volumetric rendering techniques have always been a useful support for the anatomical and pathological study of the maxillofacial district. Nowadays accessibility to multidetector CT scanners allows the achievement of images with an extremely thin collimation and with high spatial resolution, not only along the axial plane but also along the patient's longitudinal axis. This feature is the main theoretical assumption for multiplanar imaging and for an optimal 3-dimensional postprocessing. Multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) techniques permit images along
