PKA-CREB-BDNF signaling pathway mediates propofol-induced long-term learning and memory impairment in hippocampus of rats.

Studies have found that propofol can induce widespread neuroapoptosis in developing brains, which leads to cause long-term learning and memory abnormalities. However, the specific cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying propofol-induced neuroapoptosis remain elusive. The aim of the present study was to explore the role of PKA-CREB-BDNF signaling pathway in propofol-induced long-term learning and memory impairment during brain development. Seven-day-old rats were randomly assigned to control, intralipid and three treatment groups (n = 5). Rats in control group received no treatment. Intral

Dissociating Long and Short-term Memory in Three-Month-Old Infants Using the Mismatch Response to Voice Stimuli.

Auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) have been successfully used in adults as well as in newborns to discriminate recall of longer-term and shorter-term memories. Specifically the Mismatch Response (MMR) to deviant stimuli of an oddball paradigm is larger if the deviant stimuli are highly familiar (i.e., retrieved from long-term memory) than if they are unfamiliar, representing an immediate change to the standard stimuli kept in short-term memory. Here, we aimed to extend previous findings indicating a differential MMR to familiar and unfamiliar deviants in newborns (Beauchemin et al., 201

Neonatal ethanol exposure impairs long-term context memory formation and prefrontal immediate early gene expression in adolescent rats.

Fetal alcohol exposure leads to severe disruptions in learning and memory involving the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in humans. Animal model research on FASD has documented impairment of hippocampal neuroanatomy and function but animal studies of cognition involving the prefrontal cortex are sparse. We have found that a variant of contextual fear conditioning in which both the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex is required, the Context Preexposure Facilitation Effect (CPFE), is particularly sensitive to neurobehavioral disruption caused by neonatal ethanol exposure during the third trimest

Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Mice Impairs Long-Term Fear Memory Consolidation through Dysfunction of the Cortex and Amygdala.

Chronic infection with Toxoplasma gondii becomes established in tissues of the central nervous system, where parasites may directly or indirectly modulate neuronal function. Epidemiological studies have revealed that chronic infection in humans is a risk factor for developing mental diseases. However, the mechanisms underlying parasite-induced neuronal dysfunction in the brain remain unclear. Here, we examined memory associated with conditioned fear in mice and found that T. gondii infection impairs consolidation of conditioned fear memory. To examine the brain pathology induced by T. gondii i

Cognitive sequelae of methanol poisoning involve executive dysfunction and memory impairment in cross-sectional and long-term perspective.

Methanol poisoning leads to lesions in the basal ganglia and subcortical white matter, as well as to demyelination and atrophy of the optic nerve. However, information regarding cognitive deficits in a large methanol sample is lacking. The principal aim of the present study was to identify the cognitive sequelae of methanol poisoning and their morphological correlates. A sample of 50 patients (METH; age 48 ± 13 years), 3-8 months after methanol poisoning, and 57 control subjects (CS; age 49 ± 13 years) were administered a neuropsychological battery. Forty-six patients were followed in 2 years'

Dietary Cholesterol Concentration and Duration Degrade Long-Term Memory of Classical Conditioning of the Rabbit's Nictitating Membrane Response.

A rabbit model of Alzheimer's disease based on feeding a cholesterol diet for eight weeks shows sixteen hallmarks of the disease, including learning and memory changes. Although we have shown 2% cholesterol and copper in water can retard learning, other studies show feeding dietary cholesterol before learning can improve acquisition whereas feeding cholesterol after learning can degrade long-term memory. We explored this issue by manipulating cholesterol concentration and duration following classical trace conditioning of the rabbit's nictitating membrane response and assessed conditioned resp

Beyond initial encoding: measures of the post-encoding status of memory traces predict long-term recall during infancy.

The first years of life are witness to rapid changes in long-term recall ability. In the current research we contributed to an explanation of the changes by testing the absolute and relative contributions to long-term recall of encoding and post-encoding processes. Using elicited imitation, we sampled the status of 16-, 20-, and 24-month-old infants' memory representations at various time points after experience of events. In Experiment 1, infants were tested immediately, 1 week after encoding, and again after 1 month. The measure of 1-week trace status was a unique predictor of 1-month delaye

Mucosal adjuvants and long-term memory development with special focus on CTA1-DD and other ADP-ribosylating toxins.

The ultimate goal for vaccination is to stimulate protective immunological memory. Protection against infectious diseases not only relies on the magnitude of the humoral immune response, but more importantly on the quality and longevity of it. Adjuvants are critical components of most non-living vaccines. Although little attention has been given to qualitative aspects of the choice of vaccine adjuvant, emerging data demonstrate that this function may be central to vaccine efficacy. In this review we describe efforts to understand more about how adjuvants influence qualitative aspects of memory

Immunometabolic reprogramming of Mycobacterium tuberculosis-responsive memory CD4+ T cell subsets is linked to long-term protective immunity.

INTRODUCTION: Memory CD4+ T cells are central to long-term immunity in tuberculosis (TB), yet their functional roles that define their protective capacity remain unclear. Understanding the immune mechanisms that prevent clinical progression from latent TB infection (LTBI) to active TB disease is critical for the development of next-generation vaccines and biomarkers. METHODS: We characterized the transcriptomic, metabolic, and functional programs of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) antigen-stimulated peripheral CD4+ T stem cell (T-SCM), central (T-CM), transitional (T-TM), and effector (T-EM)

Long-term inhibition of protease hypersensitivity by initial immunological cross-regulation and epigenetic memory in lung stromal cells.

Prevention and regulation of excessive inflammation is a key target to protect against inflammatory pathologies such as autoimmunity and allergy. In a mouse model of acute lung protease hypersensitivity, we assessed the efficacy of immunological cross-regulation to mitigate pathogenic inflammation. We show that induction of a type 1 response using Toll-like receptor ligands or a bacterial lysate efficiently blocks acute eosinophilia and type 2 responses evoked by the cysteine protease papain. Upon rechallenge with papain weeks later, mice displayed enhanced type 2 responses and eosinophilia, w

Long-Term Treatment with Fluoroethylnormemantine (FENM) Alleviated Memory Deficits, Amyloid Pathology, and Microglial Reaction in APP/PS1 Mice.

Fluoroethylnormemantine (FENM, RST-01) shows different pharmacological properties from Memantine. The drug is neuroprotective in pharmacological and transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD), particularly limiting the neuroinflammatory response to amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation. In order to define early therapeutic intervention aimed at preventing AD and targeting the early activation of proinflammatory pathways, we examined the impact of chronic FENM treatment starting presymptomatically in APPswe/PSEN1∂E9 (APP/PS1) mice. APP/PS1 (32 males and 36 females) and wild-type (WT, 23 males an

Application of bi-directional long short-term memory in separating NO and SO2 ultraviolet differential absorption spectrum signals.

To safeguard the environment, it is crucial to monitor the emissions of nitrogen oxide (NO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2), harmful pollutants generated during fossil fuel combustion in industries. However, accurately measuring ultra-low concentrations of SO2 and NO remains a challenge. In this study, we developed an optical measurement system based on ultraviolet differential optical absorption spectroscopy (UV-DOAS) to address this issue. The 200-230 nm cross-sensitivity band was chosen for SO2 and NO. Experimental data with a mixed gas concentration range of 1-25 ppm for SO2 and NO was utilized.

Predicting the Spatial-Temporal Distribution of Human Brucellosis in Europe Based on Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory Network.

Brucellosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by brucellae or other bacteria directly invading human body. Brucellosis presents the aggregation characteristics and periodic law of infectious diseases in temporal and spatial distribution. Taking major European countries as an example, this study established the temporal and spatial distribution sequence of brucellosis, analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of brucellosis, and quantitatively predicted its epidemic law by using different traditional or machine learning models. This paper indicates that the epidemic o

Accelerated long-term forgetting after TIA or minor stroke: A more sensitive measure for detecting subtle memory dysfunction?

Cognitive changes after minor stroke or TIA have been reported, with studies describing a 'vascular' cognitive profile with spared episodic memory. Still, many patients also report memory complaints. Studies using long-term forgetting paradigms have detected memory impairment after prolonged intervals in contrast to standard delayed testing in other patient groups. This study examined whether accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) is present in patients with minor stroke or TIA by comparing one-week delayed recall and recognition with the performance of a healthy control group. Results reveale

Influences of Long-Term Memory-Guided Attention and Stimulus-Guided Attention on Visuospatial Representations within Human Intraparietal Sulcus.

UNLABELLED: Human parietal cortex plays a central role in encoding visuospatial information and multiple visual maps exist within the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), with each hemisphere symmetrically representing contralateral visual space. Two forms of hemispheric asymmetries have been identified in parietal cortex ventrolateral to visuotopic IPS. Key attentional processes are localized to right lateral parietal cortex in the temporoparietal junction and long-term memory (LTM) retrieval processes are localized to the left lateral parietal cortex in the angular gyrus. Here, using fMRI, we investi
