Comparison of Practicum Types in Changing Preservice Teachers' Attitudes and Perceived Competence.

The purpose was to compare the effects of two practicum types (off campus and on campus) on physical education teacher education (PETE) students' attitudes and perceived competence toward teaching school-aged students with physical disabilities or moderate-severe mental retardation. PETE students, enrolled in a 15-week introductory adapted physical education (APE) course and involved in eight sessions of either off-campus (n = 22) or on-campus (n = 15) practicum experiences, completed Rizzo's (1993a) Physical Educators' Attitudes Toward Teaching Individuals with Disabilities-III (PEATID-III) t

Eating disorders and psychiatric comorbidity among first-year university students in Sweden: Prevalence and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: This study explored eating disorders (ED) prevalences, comorbidity of ED with other mental disorders, and risk factors for ED among university students. ED included binge eating disorder (BED), bulimia nervosa (BN), or other specified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED). METHODS: A total of 3425 first-year university students in Sweden completed an online survey covering a range of criteria for psychiatric diagnoses, within the World Mental Health International College Student (WMH-ICS) initiative. Pearson's χ2 -tests were used to compare algorithm-based diagnostic prevalences fo

Exploring Nurses' Experiences in Caring for Medical-Psychiatric Comorbid Patients: A Qualitative Interview Study.

Approximately one-third of patients who visit general hospitals have a mental disorder, which is associated with poorer outcomes and higher costs. Caring for these patients can be challenging for nurses, particularly when behaviours such as aggression, wandering, or lack of cooperation occur. To explore how nurses experience caring for patients with medical-psychiatric comorbidities in general hospital wards a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews was conducted. Sixteen registered nurses with varying experience from eight wards in a Dutch university medical centre participated. Da

A new treatment approach to conduct disorder and callous-unemotional traits: an assessment of the acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility of Impact VR.

INTRODUCTION: Conduct disorder (CD) is highly prevalent among youth, yet existing and conventional treatment approaches are limited and costly. Further, most interventions for CD focus on behavior management rather than targeting the underlying mechanisms of CD. To meet the needs of youth with CD (ages 10-17), we developed Impact VR, a virtual reality intervention that promotes competency in emotion recognition and regulation, as well as modeling prosocial behaviors. Impact VR provides immersive storylines and gamification of psychoeducation training. The present study aimed to understand the

State of the Science: Culturally Adapted Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Asian Americans.

Asian Americans are proportionately the fastest-growing racial group in the United States yet remain among the least likely to seek mental health services, often facing significant cultural and structural barriers. This state-of-the-science review synthesizes existing research on culturally adapted psychotherapy, with a focus on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for Asian American populations. Meta-analytic findings suggest that culturally adapted interventions, particularly those that utilize deep structural adaptations (e.g., those that incorporate cultural values, beliefs and worldviews),

[Life-Sustaining Treatments: a requirement for accessing medically assisted suicide, or a trap for doctors and patients?].

The paper analyzes the concept of "Life-Sustaining Treatments" (LST) in the context of Medically Assisted Suicide (MAS) in Italy. The authors highlight how the requirement of LST, established by Constitutional Court Ruling n. 242/2019 along with three other criteria (irreversible pathology, intolerable suffering, decision-making capacity), has often been used to reject requests for access to MAS. Subsequent Constitutional Court rulings (135/2024 and 66/2025) have progressively expanded the definition of LST, including care procedures such as bowel evacuation, urinary catheterization, and mucus

Ethical and legal considerations in capacity assessment and the role of community nurses.

This article aims to explore the ethical and legal considerations involved in the assessment of mental capacity by community nurses in the UK. Grounded in the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the article explores the practical challenges community nurses face when applying legal frameworks in varied clinical contexts, including home visits, remote consultations and multidisciplinary care. Key themes addressed include the role of consent, safeguarding responsibilities, fluctuating capacity in chronic illness, family and professional disputes and supported decision making for individu

Defending manic competence: a reply to Kane.

In a recent paper in this journal, I defended the thesis that some, although not all, patients experiencing acute bipolar mania are competent to consent. I made this argument based on the fact that the burden of proof lies with those who want to make judgements of incapacity (because autonomy is the default option until proven otherwise). We then need to ask what the reasons are for claiming that manic patients are not competent. I surveyed and critiqued the two most common reasons offered in the literature, which are that manic patients are irrational or that their value shifts in mania are d

Legal decisions on longstanding severe eating disorders.

The treatment of longstanding severe eating disorders is a public concern amid rising service pressures and legal cases. These cases raise complex issues about the interface between legislative schemes, restrictive practices, best interests, treatment refusal and potential interaction with assisted dying legislation, when patients lack capacity yet clearly express wishes.

Mother-child relationship quality and effective discipline as mediators of the 6-year effects of the New Beginnings Program for children from divorced families.

This study examines whether program effects on mother-child relationship quality and effective discipline mediated the 6-year longitudinal effects of the New Beginnings Program (NBP) to improve mental health and competence outcomes in 218 adolescents from divorced families in a randomized experimental trial. The NBP is a theory-based and parenting-focused preventive intervention to help children adjust to divorce, and it has previously shown significant main and/or Program x Baseline Risk interaction effects to reduce adolescents' mental health and social adaptation problems and to promote com

Minority stressors and their associations with severe psychological distress among gender-diverse people.

People whose gender does not align with assigned sex often experience negative mental health outcomes related to cisnormative societal expectations and oppression, including familial rejection, threat of harm, and identity invalidation (e.g., misgendering). This study merged two cross-sectional data sets of trans and gender-diverse people (N = 363; Mage = 22.02) investigating how various types of distal minority stress experiences impact psychological distress. We tested the associations between three minority stressors (i.e., family rejection, threat of harm, and identity invalidation) and ps

Prenatal Attachment, Parental Confidence, and Mental Health in Expecting Parents: The Role of Childhood Trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to childhood abuse or neglect may lead to negative outcomes during pregnancy in expecting parents, which may contribute to a negative experience of childbearing and have consequences for the developing fetus. This study examined the associations between exposure to childhood abuse or neglect, psychological symptoms, prenatal attachment, and perception of parental competence in expectant parents. METHODS: Individuals at low sociodemographic risk were recruited in community perinatal care settings and completed self-report assessment measures of depression, posttraumatic

Suicide Prevention Competencies Among Muslim Faith Leaders in Canada: Levels and Determinants from a Cross-Sectional Study.

Suicide prevention is a critical public health issue, yet little is known about how prepared Muslim faith leaders are to handle situations involving suicidal distress. Despite serving as key sources of support within their communities, their readiness and the factors influencing it remain understudied. This study addresses this gap by assessing the levels of Suicide Prevention Competency (SPC) among Muslim faith leaders in Canada and identifying the main determinants of these competencies. A national online survey was conducted between September and December 2025 using purposive and convenienc

Applying relational spirituality to develop spiritual and religious competencies in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy training.

Psychedelic-assisted therapies (PAT) can provoke personally meaningful spiritual or existential experiences in patients; these experiences have been associated with improved outcomes across several treatment targets and populations. The need for spiritual and religious competence, though present across the spectrum of psychotherapeutic practice, is especially strong in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapies. The relational spirituality model (RSM), a systematically developed and empirically tested framework for spiritual and religious competency in psychotherapy, offers a theoretical and practic
