Dietary exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) causes irreversible damage to human cognition and is mitigated by photolysis and microbial demethylation of MeHg. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) has been identified as a major dietary source of MeHg. However, it remains unknown what drives the process within plants for MeHg to make its way from soils to rice and the subsequent human dietary exposure to Hg. Here we report a hidden pathway of MeHg demethylation independent of light and microorganisms in rice plants. This natural pathway is driven by reactive oxygen species generated in vivo, rapidly transforming …

We coupled compound-specific isotopic analyses of nitrogen (N) in amino acids (δ15NGlu, δ15NPhe) and mercury stable isotopes (δ202Hg, Δ199Hg) to quantify ecological traits governing the concentration, variability, and source of Hg in largemouth bass (LB) and pike gudgeon (PG) across four rivers, South Korea. PG displayed uniform Hg concentration (56-137 ng/g), trophic position (TPcorrected; 2.6-3.0, n = 9), and N isotopes in the source amino acid (δ15NPhe; 7-13‰), consistent with their specialist feeding on benthic insects. LB showed wide ranges in Hg concentration (45-693 ng/g), TPcorrected (…

A prerequisite for environmental and toxicological applications of mercury (Hg) stable isotopes in wildlife and humans is quantifying the isotopic fractionation of biological reactions. Here, we measured stable Hg isotope values of relevant tissues of giant petrels (Macronectes spp.). Isotopic data were interpreted with published HR-XANES spectroscopic data that document a stepwise transformation of methylmercury (MeHg) to Hg-tetraselenolate (Hg(Sec)4) and mercury selenide (HgSe) (Sec = selenocysteine). By mathematical inversion of isotopic and spectroscopic data, identical δ202Hg values for M…

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin, mainly derived from microbial mercury methylation in natural aquatic environments, and poses threats to human health. Polar regions and paddy soils are potential hotspots of mercury methylation and represent environmental settings that are susceptible to natural and anthropogenic perturbations. The effects of changing environmental conditions on the methylating microorganisms and mercury speciation due to global climate change and farming practices aimed for sustainable agriculture were discussed for polar regions and paddy soils, respectively. To better u…

We examined the relationships among tuna consumption, hair mercury levels, and knowledge of mercury exposure risk from tuna consumption in university students that were offered tuna daily at university-run dining halls. Hair total mercury levels in tuna consumers were higher than those in non-tuna consumers (average = 0.466 µg/g ± 0.328 standard deviation [SD], n = 20 vs 0.110 µg/g ± 0.105 SD, n = 33, respectively; p < 0.0001, Mann-Whitney U test), with tuna eaters exhibiting a positive relationship between self-reported tuna consumption at dining halls and hair mercury levels (R2 = 0.868, p …

Mercury (Hg) speciation and sorption analyses in contaminated aquifers are useful for understanding transformation, retention, and mobility of Hg in groundwater. In most aquifers hydrous ferric oxides (HFOs) are among the most important sorbents for trace metals; however, their role in sorption or mobilization of Hg in aquifers has been rarely analyzed. In this study, we investigated Hg chemistry and Hg sorption to HFO under changing redox conditions in a highly HgCl2-contaminated aquifer (up to 870μgL(-1) Hg). Results from aqueous and solid phase Hg measurements were compared to modeled (PHRE…

INTRODUCTION: Although several cases of i.v. injection of metallic mercury have been reported, it still remains an uncommon event.
CASE REPORT: A 34-year-old male came to hospital because complaining of pleuritic chest pain. X-ray showed radio dense punctate lesions in both lung fields, as well as around both elbows. Mercury concentration in blood (140 microg/L) and urine (320 microg/L) from the patient were significantly elevated, compared with the reference concentrations of < or = 2.0 mug/L mercury in blood and urine. The course of renal elimination of mercury and the mercury concentration…

Estuarine environments that have no direct sources of mercury (Hg) pollution may have sediment concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) as high as those of polluted marine environments. In this study we examined the biogeochemical factors affecting net methylation and sediment MeHg concentrations in an unpolluted estuarine environment, the Ore River estuary, which discharges into the Bothnian Bay (20-120 ng total Hg g(-1) dry sediment, salinity 3-5% per hundred). We analyzed the spatial and temporal differences in surface sediment profiles of MeHg concentration, Hg methylation, MeHg demethylatio…

Blood organic mercury (i.e., methyl mercury) concentrations among 1,709 women who were participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 1999 and 2000 (1999-2000 NHANES) were 0.6 microg/L at the 50th percentile and ranged from concentrations that were nondetectable (5th percentile) to 6.7 microg/L (95th percentile). Blood organic/methyl mercury reflects methyl mercury intake from fish and shellfish as determined from a methyl mercury exposure parameter based on 24-hr dietary recall, 30-day food frequency, and mean concentrations of mercury in the fish/shellfish s…

Organic mercury intoxication in rats produces degenerative changes in the dorsal root ganglia and dorsal nerve roots. In a previous study of rats treated with organic mercury (2 mg/kg ) for 19 days, significant losses of ganglion cells (especially A-cells) and myelinated axons were observed in dorsal nerve roots and there was qualitative evidence of glial cell proliferation and the formation of Nageotte bodies (1). In the present study, the autometallographic silver-enhancement technique, for tracing inorganic mercury bound to sulphide or selenide (AMG-Hg), was applied to tissue sections of do…

Methylmercury (MeHg) production is controlled by the bioavailability of inorganic divalent mercury (Hg(II)i ) and Hg-methylation capacity of the microbial community (conferred by the hgcAB gene cluster). However, the relative importance of these factors and their interaction in the environment remain poorly understood. Here, metagenomic sequencing and a full-factorial MeHg formation experiment were conducted across a wetland sulfate gradient with different microbial communities and pore water chemistries. From this experiment, the relative importance of each factor on MeHg formation was isolat…

The characteristics of bacteria take up mercury into cells via membrane potential-dependent sequence-divergent members of the mercuric ion (Mer) superfamily, i.e., a periplasmic mercuric ion scavenging protein (MerP) and one or more inner membrane-spanning proteins (MerC, MerE, MerF, and MerT), which transport mercuric ions into the cytoplasm, have been applied in engineering of bioreactor used for mercurial bioremediation. We engineered bacteria to express MerC, MerE, MerF, or MerT with or without MerP to clarify their individual role and potential in transport of mercurial. By immunoblot ana…

Soil ingestion by children can be a significant exposure pathway to mercury (Hg). Unfortunately, no reliable in vivo results for Hg oral bioavailability determination in soils have been published. In vitro extractions enable the assessment of metals' bioaccessibility, which is an estimate of oral bioavailability. Therefore, the goal of this study was to evaluate two in vitro protocols (CDM (Camp Dresser and Mc Kee Inc.) and IVG (In Vitro Gastrointestinal)) for determination of Hg bioaccessibility in soils using pure Hg-compounds, reference materials (CRM 025-050 and ERM-CC580), and field-colle…

There is growing evidence that heavy metals, in general, and mercurial compounds, in particular, are toxic to the human immune system. In this regard, we have previously shown that both inorganic and organic mercurials are potent human T-cell apoptogens; moreover, mitochondria appear to be a target organelle for the induction of cell death. To ascertain whether both mercury species utilize the same molecular pathway to trigger the apoptotic cascade, cells were treated with MeHgCl or HgCl2 and mitochondrial activity was examined. We show that both mercury species affect mitochondrial activity b…

In this paper, the results of mercury concentrations in two abiotic compartments (river water and suspended particles) and two biotic compartments (fish and human hair) from the upper Madeira rivers of the Bolivian Amazon basin are presented. Because of the local hydrological regimes and a high deposition rate in the plain, due to the presence of a subsidence zone at the bottom of the Andean piedmont, in the dry season, the highest mercury concentrations and fluxes were not found in rivers where mining activities took place (2.25-6.99 ng l(-1); and 1.07-8.67 mg Hg d(-1) km(-2)), but at the out…

Study was conducted in a group of 32 persons engaged in liquid phase epitaxial growth of mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) layers for nearly 11 years. Airborne mercury concentrations in work environment have been exceeding the threshold limit value of 0.05 mg/m3 recommended by ACGIHD. Hg concentration in workplace during peak working hours remained between 0.04-0.08 mg/m3. Findings were compared with 32 unexposed referents. Mercury value was estimated 1.60 +/- 0.20 (mean +/- SD) in control, and in Phase I and II, 10.72 +/- 1.34 ng Hg/ml and 8.08 +/- 1.15 ng Hg/ml of blood respectively. Results i…

An Alsatian dog which had been fed fish contaminated with methyl mercury for 7 years was examined after its death at the age of 12, 4 years after the exposure to methyl mercury had ceased. Two dogs of the same age and breed served as controls. In the exposed dog, mercury was found in all of the organs examined; the highest concentrations were found in the kidneys, and the lowest in the gastrointestinal tract and skeletal muscles. In the central nervous system (CNS) the mercury was fairly uniformly distributed, with 93% in the inorganic state, whereas the skeletal muscles contained approximatel…

In order to determine if there are any residual effects of long-term exposure to mercury vapor, neurobehavioral tests were given to ex-mercury miners about 18 years after the cessation of mercury exposure. Seventy-six male ex-mercury miners who had been exposed to relatively high concentrations of mercury vapor (over 1.0 mg/m3) and with a past history of mercury intoxication were compared to age (+/- 3 years)-, sex-, and years of education-matched controls. Although the extent of the workers' symptoms caused by mercury poisoning, termed erethismus merculialis, markedly decreased after the cess…
