Cell groups of the medial longitudinal fasciculus and paramedian tracts.

The aim of this article is to introduce the reader to a continuum of cell clusters which may play an important role in the maintenance of ey … re demonstrate that they also receive a direct input from the vertical premotor gaze neurons in the mesencephalon (rostral iMLF and the interstitial nucleus of Cajal), as well as from some groups of oculomotor internuclear neurons. The projecting fibres descend to the cell groups of the paramedian tracts in the MLF. It is suggested that deficits in gaze-holding …

[Decompressive trepanation in therapy refractory brain edema].

Already in 1905 and 1908 Harvey Cushing carried out decompression operations for the relieving of pressure in inoperable glious tumours and posttraumatic cerebral oedmas. This surgical method of trephination, which later-on was adopted by many other surgeons, was based on the method of the prevention of an incarceration of the mesencephalon in the tentorial slit by an enlargement of the reserve space in the interior of the crane. In case of a posttraumatic cerebral oedema, besides Heppner's work group practically all other authors operated in pronounced late stages of the incarceration. The re…

[Vertebrobasilar insufficiency of prenatal origin: a case report].

The case of a newborn presenting from birth with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita resting mainly on the legs, severe hypotonia, consciousness anomalies, clonic fits, recurrent apnea and bradycardia, absent sucking and swallowing is described. At the age 4 months a further episode of apnea and bradycardia was followed by death. The neuropathologic analysis disclosed a number of bilateral, cystic and symmetric infarcts in the thalamus and hypothalamus, spreading caudally to the tegmentum of the mesencephalon and the pons. Such distribution of lesions does suggest a vascular topography, i.e. in…

[Cultivation of whole brain slices: a description of the method and the results of its use for culturing the rhombencephalon and midbrain of chick embryos].

A method and device for obtaining embryo brain slices are described. Results of cultivation of slices of rhombencephalon and mesencephalon are presented obtained in accord with a proposed technique of the "swimming float" (Olenev, 1979). With this cultivation, original topographical relations between brain nuclei and fibrillar tracts remain unchanged that enables us to compare these cultures with histological sections of brain to identify strictly the structures being cultivated. Cultured neurons of nuclei of XII and VIII pairs of cranial nerves have been first described in addition to various…

Development of bombesin-like and histamine-like innervation in the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) central nervous system.

Amphibians rely exclusively on behavioral thermoregulation to maintain body temperature within species- and developmental stage-specific cri … und only in the preoptic area, posterior thalamic nucleus and in the rostroventral tegmentum of the mesencephalon. In the preoptic area, dramatic changes were observed in the number and staining intensity of BN-ir somata; neuronal labelling was greatest in tadpoles undergoing tail resorption (i.e. metamorphic climax) and was nearly absent in adults. Neurons imm …

Clinical, pathologic, immunohistochemical, and virologic findings of eastern equine encephalomyelitis in two horses.

Natural eastern equine encephalitis alphavirus (EEEV) infection was diagnosed in two adult horses with anorexia and colic, changes in sensor … cal microabscesses. Lesions were more prominent within cerebral cortex, thalamus, hypothalamus, and mesencephalon. EEEV was identified in the cytoplasm of cardiac myocytes and smooth muscle cells of spleen, stomach, intestine, urinary bladder, blood vessels, and dendritic cells. In the CNS, EEEV-positive cells included neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, mic …

A new lens on Alzheimer's disease: Insights into the Edinger-Westphal nucleus and its circuits.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the primary cause of dementia, and as the population ages, the number of individuals affected by the disease continues to rise. However, effective treatments for AD are still lacking. In the initial stages of AD, many brain regions are susceptible to its characteristic pathological changes, such as the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW nucleus) located in the midbrain region, which functions primarily as the parasympathetic oculomotor nucleus regulating pupil constriction. In this review, we outline the characteristics of EW nucleus alterations in AD and their potential

Human Adapted Prosomeric Model: A Future for Brainstem Tumor Classification.

This study reevaluates the conventional understanding of midbrain anatomy and neuroanatomical nomenclature in the context of recent genetic and anatomical discoveries. The authors assert that the midbrain should be viewed as an integral part of the forebrain due to shared genetic determinants and evolutionary lineage. The isthmo-mesencephalic boundary is recognized as a significant organizer for both the caudal midbrain and the isthmo-cerebellar area. The article adopts the prosomeric model, redefining the whole brain as neuromeres, offering a more precise depiction of brain development, inclu

Chronic Opioid Treatment Arrests Neurodevelopment and Alters Synaptic Activity in Human Midbrain Organoids.

Understanding the impact of long-term opioid exposure on the embryonic brain is critical due to the surging number of pregnant mothers with opioid dependency. However, this has been limited by human brain inaccessibility and cross-species differences in animal models. Here, a human midbrain model is established that uses hiPSC-derived midbrain organoids to assess cell-type-specific responses to acute and chronic fentanyl treatment and fentanyl withdrawal. Single-cell mRNA sequencing of 25,510 cells from organoids in different treatment groups reveals that chronic fentanyl treatment arrests neu

[Mesencephalic Ewing sarcoma: Case report].

Ewing's sarcoma is a malignant neoplasm mainly occurring in the bone, with other locations being exceptional. In the case of primary intracranial presentations, it is essential to rule out metastatic lesions as well as other neuroectodermal tumors that may require different diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. We present a 14-year-old patient who consulted for upper eyelid ptosis of left eye associated with a 2-month history of diplopia, with imaging evidence of extra-axial tumor lesion, located at the level of the interpeduncular cistern. Complete excision was performed, with a pathological

Wernekinck Commissure Syndrome with Holmes Tremor: A Report of Two Cases and Review of Literature.

Wernekinck commissure syndrome is a rare midbrain infarction, it consists of several symptoms including bilateral cerebellar ataxia, ophthalmoplegia, and palatal tremor. Holmes tremor is a rare clinical syndrome characterized by a combination of resting, postural, and action tremors. We describe two cases of Wernekinck commissure syndrome with Holmes tremor. To the best of our knowledge, it has been rarely reported in the literature to date. Both of the cases were presented with acute onset of bilateral cerebellar ataxia, dysarthria, and Holmes tremor. In the treatment, one patient was given "

Thalamic versus midbrain tremor; two distinct types of Holmes' Tremor: a review of 17 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Holmes Tremor (HT) is a unique and debilitating movement disorder. It usually results from lesions of the midbrain and its connection but can also result from posterior thalamic injury. Clinical examination can help lesion localization between these two areas. We studied the clinical features and their radiological correlations to distinguish midbrain HT (HT-m) from thalamic HT (HT-t). METHODS: Retrospective review of 17 patients with a HT-type presentation was conducted. Tremor characteristics, associated clinical signs and radiological findings were studied. RESULTS: Eleven p

Wall-Eyed Bilateral Internuclear Ophthalmoplegia (WEBINO) in a Patient With a Unilateral Midbrain Infarction.

INTRODUCTION: Wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (WEBINO) is a rare variation of internuclear ophthalmoplegia associated with bilateral lesions of the medial longitudinal fasciculus. CASE REPORT: In this case, the edematous lesions of the ipsilateral midbrain infarction appeared to compress the contralateral medial longitudinal fasciculus, resulting in WEBINO. Treatment of focal cerebral edema caused by ischemic stroke is still under debate. However, in this case, antiedema treatment was implemented to prevent the sequelae of the edematous lesion caused by a midbrain infarction,

Habenular and interpeduncularis nuclei: shared components in multiple-function networks.

STUDY AIMS: Advance Directives (AD) are central to Advance Care Planning (ACP), allowing patients to document medical preferences in legally binding documents. Despite broad public awareness and support, only one-fifth of the Swiss population has completed an AD. Consequently, the roadmap for ACP implementation by the ACP National Task Force calls for the development of digital applications to promote ACP in Switzerland. This study details the development process for the mobile application "iDecide" for AD creation based on the Swiss Medical Association (FMH) AD template. The primary aim is to

[A case of cerebral pedunclar infarction presenting with pure motor hemiparesis].

Left pure motor hemiparesis occurred in a 42-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The left hemiparesis affected the arm and leg equally. The face was almost spared, with only a very slight facial asymmetry. Brain CT and MRI showed a small infarction located in the external 2/3 of the right cerebral peduncle. Cerebral angiography did not reveal significant abnormalities.

Vascular network-inspired diffusible scaffolds for engineering functional midbrain organoids.

Organoids, 3D organ-like tissue cultures derived from stem cells, show promising potential for developmental biology, drug discovery, and regenerative medicine. However, the function and phenotype of current organoids, especially neural organoids, are still limited by insufficient diffusion of oxygen, nutrients, metabolites, signaling molecules, and drugs. Herein, we present vascular network-inspired diffusible (VID) scaffolds to mimic physiological diffusion physics for generating functional organoids and phenotyping their drug response. Specifically, the VID scaffolds, 3D-printed meshed tubu
