BACKGROUND: High noise levels during daytime work may cause sleep disturbances amongst workers, but research findings are inconclusive so far.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare sleep amongst workers exposed to high and low daytime noise during work in a developing country, where workplaces often have high noise levels.

Inhalation exposure to manganese (Mn) was measured for a group of garage mechanics and a control group of nonautomotive workers. The airborne Mn exposure of 35 garage mechanics suspected of being relatively highly exposed to Mn from MMT was measured at the workplace over one-week period. The hypothenar hammer syndrome is an uncommon but underestimated lesion of the cubital artery caused by repetitive trauma at the level of the hamate bone. It characteristically occurs in patients with a history of manual work as metal workers, carpenters and motor mechanics. We present a case of a patient who developed this syndrome following intensive use of a dig. Clinical finding, diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

Manganese sulphate (6 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally daily for 30 days in carbon tetrachloride pretreated rats. Histological and histochemical studies in liver tissue revealed extensive damage to hepatic parenchyma in these rats as compared to lesions produced by manganese sulphate alone. These findings suggest that workers, with liver dysfunction ergated in manganese industry may be more susceptible to the toxic effects of this metal.

A cross sectional study was conducted on workers engaged in manufacturing precious metal powder. Occupational analyses were conducted between 1971 and 1978 comparing 165 cases of testicular cancer in the Hannover region of Germany with 187 controls without neoplastic diseases admitted to the Hannover University Medical School during the same period.
