To clarify the cellular origin and the fate of M cells, detailed distributions of the epithelial cells were investigated scanning electron microscopically on the follicle-associated epithelia (FAE) of chicken cecal tonsils. Human amniotic epithelium was examined in cases of pregnancy complicated with hydramnios; the light- and electronmicroscopical results were compared with those of epithelium in normal pregnancy. The cells of the hydramniotic epithelium show an increased number of microvilli in apical and lateral cell surfaces. There are also a greater number of desmosomes and enlarged intercellular spaces. In a single case where hydramnios was correlated with maternal diabetes mellitus the amniotic epithelium is characterized by local foci showing cellular dystrophy.

A 56-year-old woman presented with a right inguinal mass. Biopsy revealed multiple lymph nodes involved with papillary and gland-like structures extending into the surrounding fibroadipose tissue. There was no history of carcinoma or other malignancy. Ultrastructural findings included long microvilli, desmosomes, and tonofilament bundles, indicating metastatic malignant mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma only rarely presents as a lymph node metastasis, and electron microscopy is very useful in establishing this diagnosis.

After a brief examination of the recent literature on plasma cell leukemia, the Authors describe the clinical features and the ultrastructural findings of the peripheral blood plasma cells, examined with transmission (T.E.M.) and scanning (S.E.M.) electron microscopes, of two patients with acute plasma cell leukemia. Both of them had a previous history of myeloma. T.E.M. confirmed the diagnostic value of the asynchronous plasma cells, and S.E.M. showed the characteristic microvilli and blebs, previously observed.

We present what, to our knowledge, is the first reported case of nephrogenic metaplasia of the ureter. Nephrogenic metaplasia involves the transitional epithelium of the urinary tract and results in the formation of epithelial tubules, which are histologically similar to renal tubules. Special stains demonstrated both intracellular and intraluminal mucin. Ultrastructurally, the lesion consisted of epithelial cells with sparse microvilli and a thick basal lamina. The criteria for diagnosis and differentiation from carcinoma are discussed.
