Quantitative assessment of elemental carbon in the lungs of never smokers, cigarette smokers, and coal miners.

Inhalation exposure to particulates such as cigarette smoke and coal dust is known to contribute to the development of chronic lung disease. The purpose of this study was to estimate the amount of elemental carbon (EC) deposits from autopsied lung samples from cigarette smokers, miners, and control subjects and explore the relationship between EC level, exposure history, and the extent of chronic lung disease. The samples comprised three subgroups representing never smokers (8), chronic cigarette smokers (26), and coal miners (6). Following the dissolution of lung tissue, the extracted EC resi…

Occupational dust and radiation exposure and mortality from stomach cancer among German uranium miners, 1946-2003.

OBJECTIVES: 'Dusty occupations' and exposure to low-dose radiation have been suggested as potential risk factors for stomach cancer. Data from the German uranium miner cohort study are used to further evaluate this topic. METHODS: The cohort includes 58 677 miners with complete information on occupational exposure to dust, arsenic and radiation dose based on a detailed job-exposure matrix. A total of 592 stomach cancer deaths occurred in the follow-up period from 1946 to 2003. A Poisson regression model stratified by age and calendar year was used to calculate the excess relative risk (ERR) p…

Lack of association between cytokine gene polymorphisms and silicosis and pulmonary tuberculosis in Chinese iron miners.

Silicosis is a fibrotic lung disease produced by the inhalation and deposition of silica dust. The association between silicosis and pulmona … cosis and PTB. We conducted a case-control study with 183 silicosis patients and 111 silica-exposed miners, and a 1:2 matched case-control study of 61 PTB cases and 122 PTB-free miners. Genotype analysis was performed on genomic DNA, using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay. There was complete linkage di …

[A comparative analysis of different approaches to identifying cardiovascular diseases in coal miners during medical selection].

An expert evaluation of identifiability of cardiovascular diseases was carried out together with a clinical and functional examination of certain groups of miners of basic underground occupations at different ages and lengths of service, that showed a high incidence of cardiovascular diseases along with a low informative value of methodical approaches, indices and criteria used for their diagnosis in conducting preliminary and periodic health check-ups. To improve the quality of diagnosis of diseases of the circulatory system it is necessary that standardized methods of investigation should be…

[Results of clinical and radiologic mass-screening tests of the locomotor system of miners in Hungary].

Clinical and radiological screening tests on the locomotor system of 250 workers being active in mines were accomplished by the authors. The test results of 125 miners working underground were compared with those of a control group consisting of equally 125 workers of the same age category, but engaged in open mining. As a result of the investigation it could be stated that miners working in underground mines were affected by diseases of the organs of motion at a very early stage, and in a greater proportion. The most serious deformations were observed with development irregularities and devel…

[Epidemiological examinations for peptic ulcer in miners of pit-coal mines. I. Effect of socioeconomic factors].

In 3-pit coal mines, all workers were examined by means of an inquiry. Apart from personal data the inquiry included information on the category of work performed, length of employment, family state and socio-living conditions as well as diseases of digestive tract. The diagnosis of peptic ulcer and data on its course were based on medical documentation of Plant Outpatient Departments. Collected material comprised 9361 persons, i.e. 95% of the whole population examined. After having excluded women, employed only on surface, results were worked out concerning the population of 8302 men employed

Occupational health challenges in mining: a study on spinal cord injuries and their impact on miners.

OBJECTIVES: Mining remains a high-risk industry, with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) among its most serious outcomes. These irreversible injuries, caused by heavy machinery accidents, falls and rockfalls, profoundly affect miners' quality of life (QoL) and work capacity. This study compared the QoL and general health of miners with non-surgical SCIs sustained at least 2 years earlier with those of miners without SCIs. METHODS: Two hundred miners with SCIs and 200 controls completed the 'Quality of Life and General Health' section of the international spinal cord injury questionnaire (InSCI-Q). T…

Unsafe psychological tendencies and self-involvement in coal miners' safety decision-making: a preliminary fNIRS study.

This preliminary fNIRS study examined how miners' safety psychology and self-involvement relate to safety decision-making. Both factors were associated with safe-decision rates, while their interaction affected reaction time. Hemodynamic responses in frontal and temporal regions also varied across decision stages. These findings suggest that individual and situational factors may influence mining-safety decisions, supporting training that addresses risks to miners and coworkers.

Beyond occupational injury: exploring lived experiences of marginalization and survival among injured coal miners in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Mining accidents are commonly examined through analyses of injury patterns, incident types, and their underlying causes, particularly from technical, mechanical, and operational perspectives, yet the long-term human costs experienced by injured miners and their families remain largely overlooked in both research and policy discourses. This study aimed to document the lived experiences of injured miners in Bangladesh in the aftermath of mining accidents, highlighting their ongoing suffering and struggles, and exploring how these experiences shape their livelihoods, mental well-being…

Association of radon exposure with lung cancer: serum biomarkers and computed tomography evidence from male miners.

The objective of this research is to investigate the association between occupational radon exposure and pulmonary health outcomes in male miners from Chongqing, China. Between June 2022 and December 2023, 110 miners were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Personal radon exposure levels were measured using passive cumulative dosimeters, with pulmonary health assessed through radiologist-interpreted low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans and serum biomarker analysis (CEA, CYFRA21-1, NSE, and CA125) via ELISA. Multivariable analyses revealed strong dose-response relationships between radon…

Measuring lung diffusing capacity: an opportunity for improved medical surveillance and disability evaluation of coal miners.

OBJECTIVES: Spirometry is the primary lung function test utilised for medical surveillance and disability examination for coal mine dust lung disease. However, spirometry likely underestimates physiologic impairment. We sought to characterise abnormalities of single-breath diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) among a population of former coal miners. METHODS: Data from 3115 former coal miners evaluated at a West Virginia black lung clinic between 2006 and 2015 were retrospectively analysed to study the association between diffusion impairment (abnormally low DLCO), resting spirometry…

Radon and cancer mortality among underground uranium miners in the Příbram region of the Czech Republic.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to estimate the association between radon and site-specific cancer mortality among a large contemporary cohort of male uranium miners. METHODS: Annual occupational radon exposure was estimated based on a worker's duration of underground mining in a year and estimates of potential alpha energy of radon progeny in their location of work. Cancer mortality over the period 1977-1992 was ascertained for a cohort of 16 434 male underground uranium miners employed in the Czech Republic between 1946 and 1992. Poisson regression was used to estimate relationships between cum…

Progressive Massive Fibrosis Resurgence Identified in U.S. Coal Miners Filing for Black Lung Benefits, 1970-2016.

RATIONALE: There has been a resurgence of progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) in the United States, particularly among central Appalachian miners. OBJECTIVES: We characterized the proportion of PMF among former U.S. coal miners applying for Federal Black Lung Program benefits, 1970-2016. METHODS: Data from the U.S. Department of Labor were used to characterize trends in proportion of PMF cases, defined as an approved black lung claim with a determination of PMF, among all miners who filed for federal benefits between January 1, 1970, and December 31, 2016. Joinpoint, logistic, and linear regr…
