Harassment and Mental Distress Among Adolescent Female Students by Sexual Identity and BMI or Perceived Weight Status.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority girls (lesbian/bisexual) and girls with overweight/obesity experience high rates of discrimination and mental distress. This study explored whether BMI or perceived weight status might compound sexual minority girls' risk for harassment and mental distress. METHODS: Data on female students from the national 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (n = 7,006) were analyzed. Logistic regression was used to examine differences in bullying, harassment, and mental distress across sexual identity/BMI groups: heterosexual/normal-weight, heterosexual/overweight, sexual minority/nor

Resource access and use: Impacts on distal minority stressors for racial and sexual diverse youth in rural and urban contexts.

Sexually and racially diverse (SD) adolescents experience elevated proximal and distal minority stressors that vary across school, community, and policy contexts. Limited research has examined how access to and use of LGBTQIA+ supportive structures, such as Gender and Sexualities Alliances (GSAs), LGBTQIA+ community centers, and affirming school staff, shape distal minority stress for racially and sexually diverse youth across geographic settings. Using cross-sectional national sample data of SD adolescents from the Adolescent Stress Experiences Over Time Study (ASETS; N = 1076), this study ap

Human leukocyte antigen in the allocation of kidneys from cadaveric donors in the United States.

Minorities wait longer for a cadaveric donor kidney transplant than whites. For example, the median waiting time to transplant for candidates listed from 1997 to 1998 was 874 days for whites, 1,493 days for blacks, 1,281 days for Hispanics, 1,491 days for Asians, and 1,466 days for others. The current allocation algorithm has been criticized as contributing to decreased access to transplants for racial minorities. There are two levels in the current algorithm: The first is mandatory national sharing between donors and patients with zero human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A, B, and DR mismatches. Th

Sleep Facilitates Coping: Moderated Mediation of Daily Sleep, Ethnic/Racial Discrimination, Stress Responses, and Adolescent Well-Being.

Using a daily diary design and actigraphy sleep data across 2 weeks among 256 ethnic/racial minority adolescents (Mage  = 14.72; 40% Asian, 22% Black, 38% Latinx; 2,607 days), this study investigated how previous-night sleep (duration, quality) moderated the same-day associations between ethnic/racial discrimination and stress responses (rumination, problem solving, family/peer support seeking) to predict daily well-being (mood, somatic symptoms, life satisfaction). On days when adolescents experienced greater discrimination, if they slept longer and better the previous night, adolescents enga

Understanding stakeholder perspectives on Apgar score, cyanosis and identifying jaundice in ethnic minority neonates.

OBJECTIVES: To explore neonatal assessments that include an element of evaluating skin colour in neonates of black, Asian and minority ethnicities, focusing on the Apgar score, presence of cyanosis and presence of jaundice. DESIGN: We employed focused ethnography involving diverse healthcare professionals (HCPs) and parents or caregivers with Black, Asian, or ethnic minority children born in the last five years. Zoom interviews were performed following a semi-structured interview guide. Ethnographic data analysis was conducted using NVivo software. RESULTS: There was a lack of consistency in

Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men Who Are Not on Oral PrEP may be Less Interested in Available Injectable Products than in Oral PrEP: Examining Individual-Level Determinants of Interest and Barriers Across Products.

Approval of the first injectable PrEP product (cabotegravir) provides an exciting addition to oral PrEP that could encourage those not currently on PrEP to use it. However, few studies have explored interest in injectable cabotegravir among those at increased risk who are not currently on PrEP. We conducted an online survey with 327 gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) with limited PrEP history to explore their interest and intentions to use oral and injectable PrEP (cabotegravir), and examine barriers and individual-level predictors of both product types. Results showed th

Do supportive work environments matter for minority aging? Work stress and subjective cognitive impairment among middle-age and older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer adults.

Research has documented how people's experiences at work affect their cognitive health outcomes, but how these processes unfold for minority groups, particularly lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) populations, is unclear. This study builds on the nascent literature by employing generalized structural equation models to test how experiencing major problems at work and working with LGBTQ+ supportive coworkers affect subjective cognitive impairment among middle-age and older LGBTQ+ adults. We also test for mediated and indirect effects of support and problems at work operatin…

Divergent changes: abstinence and higher-frequency substance use increase among racial/ethnic minority young adults during the COVID-19 global pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Identifying factors influencing substance use among racial/ethnic minorities (REM) is important given the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on this population. OBJECTIVES: We examined factors in four domains and hypothesized that poor mental health, negative coping behaviors, negative environmental aspects, and belonging to more vulnerable social groups would be associated with increased substance use during the pandemic. METHODS: Multiple regression was applied to longitudinal data from a college sample assessed prior (fall 2017 to spring 2019) and during (spring

Childhood adversity, socioemotional functioning and generalized anxiety in young adults from mixed immigration status families.

BACKGROUND: The translation of research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) into effective prevention and treatment of psychopathology requires examination of how ACEs impact mental health. Moreover, increased attention to more marginalized populations, such as immigration-affected ethnic-minority young adults, is greatly needed. OBJECTIVE: The current study tested the hypothesis that greater ACEs would be related to greater generalized anxiety symptoms directly and indirectly, via ACE-related deficits in coping efficacy, self-compassion, and perceived support, above and beyond immigratio

Structural Syndemics and Antiretroviral Medication Adherence Among Black Sexual Minority Men Living With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV antiretroviral treatment (ART) access and uptake have increased among racial/ethnic minority individuals, lower rates of ART adherence and viral suppression persist, especially among Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) compared with their White counterparts. SETTING: Black men who have sex with men living with HIV (BMSM+) residing in Los Angeles County (N = 124) were recruited in-person (eg, clinic) and online (eg, social networking apps). Achieving Equity in Informed Consent: A Culturally-Informed Perspective for the Consideration and Consent of Minority Patients for Electroconvulsive Therapy.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is highly efficacious to treat severe depression in older adults. Yet, patients of ethnic and racial minorities are consistently underrepresented amongst those who receive ECT across all age groups. One strong hypothesis to explain this disparity is that minority patients are less likely to trust medical professionals and are therefore less likely to consent for ECT. Increasing participation of depressed, elderly, minority patients is uniquely challenging. Senior minority individuals have survived decades of medical and social injustices that no other demographi

Enhancing the Relevance and Effectiveness of a Youth Gambling Prevention Program for Urban, Minority Youth: A Pilot Study of Maryland Smart Choices.

Youth with problem gambling behaviors are susceptible to serious academic, behavioral, and mental health consequences including school failure, criminal involvement, and depression. Coupled with increased exposure to gambling formats, issues related to youth gambling have been deemed a serious public health issue requiring increased prevention efforts. However, the literature is limited in terms of evidence-based gambling prevention programs warranting the development of The Maryland Smart Choices Program (MD-Smart Choices), a gambling prevention program for middle and high school youth. Examining Older Adults' Attitudes and Perceptions of Cancer Screening and Overscreening: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Screening guidelines for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer (CRC) are less clear for older adults due to the potential harms that may result from screening. Understanding older adults' attitudes and perceptions, especially racial/ethnic minority and underserved adults, of cancer screening can help health care providers determine how best to communicate with older adults about cancer screening and screening cessation. The objective of this study was to determine how older adults primarily from minority/underserved backgrounds perceive cancer screening and overscree

Which girls, which boys? The intersectional risk for depression by race and ethnicity, and gender in the U.S.

We sought to conduct the first systematic review of studies applying an intersectional lens to assessing risk and protective factors for depression in minority adolescents in the United States. Twenty-five studies were identified which investigated the role of racial and ethnic identity and gender for minority groups and how marginalization may be associated with differential outcomes in depression symptomology. The results showed substantial variability in whether studies intentionally operationalized intersectionality through theoretical frameworks, study design, sampling, and analyses. Stud…

Garnering an in-depth understanding of men who have sex with men in Chennai, India: a qualitative analysis of sexual minority status and psychological distress.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in India are a hidden and largely understudied population, and have an HIV prevalence 17 times higher than that of the general Indian population. Experiences of social marginalization and negative psychosocial conditions occur concurrent to HIV risk among Indian MSM. To better understand the contextual variables driving HIV risk and inform intervention development, five focus groups (n = 46) and nine key informant interviews were conducted with 55 MSM in Chennai in 2010. NVivo software was used to code the transcripts, and data were analyzed using qualitative de

The underrepresented minority STEMM pipeline is a pipe dream: The pipes rarely connect.

Building and sustaining a diverse health care workforce including members of underrepresented groups (URG) requires overcoming an intricate web of structural barriers and their downstream sequelae that conspire to perpetuate underrepresentation of many groups of Americans in science, technology, engineering, math, and medicine (STEMM). These include students from low income, marginalized racial and ethnic minority, gender minority, disabled, female, rural and other groups. Several recent efforts to better recognize and work through these barriers and capture talented URG youth in STEMM have ta

Breaking tradition: should biostatistics doctoral qualifying exams evolve to better serve our students' ability to demonstrate readiness to conduct independent research?

Doctoral programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education often include qualifying exams as a central component of the curriculum. While these exams are designed to assess a student's knowledge and potential to conduct independent research as part of the culminating dissertation phase of their studies, they can also inadvertently perpetuate structural biases and barriers for underrepresented groups. Biostatistics programs have increasingly focused on efforts to address diversity. While some programs had long-standing initiatives, others began following the summer
