Reduction induced S-nucleophilicity in mono-dithiolene molybdenum complexes - in situ generation of sulfonium ligands.

The reduction of a molybdenum monodithiolene complex, [Mo(CO)2(dt)(dppe)], in the presence of dichloromethane leads to the transfer of CH2 to sulfur and respective sulfonium species. Detailed analytical and mechanistical spectroscopic and electrochemical studies reveal the reasons for the unexpected formation and composition of the very unusual resultant complexes to be electronic-energetic in nature.

Electronic-Structure Determinants of Flavonoid Inhibition at the Molybdenum Cofactor of Xanthine Oxidase: A QM/MM Study.

Flavonoid-mediated inhibition of xanthine oxidase (XO) is well established at the empirical level; however, while molecular docking, MD, and MM-PBSA/MM-GBSA methods have been widely applied, the quantum-mechanical origin of the structure-activity relationship at the molybdenum cofactor (MoCo) remains unresolved. Hybrid QM/MM calculations (B3LYP/def2-SVP) on five dietary flavonoids bound to the MoCo active site of bovine XO (50 snapshots total) revealed that all five exhibit net charge redistribution at the MoCo interface, with the magnitude varying nearly 9-fold. The charge-redistribution desc…

Enrichment and risk assessment of molybdenum (Mo) in the rock-soil-maize continuum of a black shale area.

Soils overlying black shale commonly exhibit high molybdenum (Mo) background levels, yet Mo transfer along the rock-soil-plant continuum and its ecological implications remain unclear. This study systematically investigated Mo concentrations and associated risks in rock, soil, and maize samples from a black shale area in southwestern China. The results demonstrate that weathering of Lower Cambrian black shales (Mo: 6.14-52.59 mg/kg) results in Mo enrichment in the overlying soils (0.96-50.04 mg/kg). Along the weathering profile, Mo concentration generally increases from fresh rock to weathered…

Ecological risks of molybdenum in black shale and carbonate areas: Exposure, health effects, and relation with selenium.

Excessive molybdenum (Mo) intake poses potential health risks, particularly to liver and kidney function. Black shales are natural reservoirs of Mo and selenium (Se). Se mitigates heavy metal toxicity in humans. However, the exposure levels of Mo and its interactions with Se in black shale areas remain poorly understood. In this study, Mo exposure in Enshi, China, where clastic, carbonate, and black shales coexist, was investigated. The results revealed that the soil Mo concentration increased from clastic (1.03 μg/g) to carbonate (1.87 μg/g) to black shale (14.28 μg/g) areas. Rice provides mo…

Effect of Molybdenum on Microstructural Evolution and High Cycle Fatigue Properties of Ti-xMo-2Fe Alloys.

Ti-xMo-2Fe alloys with high specific strength were designed by adding Mo and Fe as β-stabilizing elements. The influence of cold swaging on the martensitic transformations in Ti-xMo-2Fe (x = 3.4, 5, 9.2 wt.%) alloys was investigated. In these alloys, appropriate chemical compositions promote a stress-induced phase transformation from the β phase to orthorhombic α″ martensite, which improves elongation while maintaining high strength. As the Mo content increases from 3.4 to 5 wt.%, the amount of β-stabilizing elements increases and the β stability is enhanced, thereby altering the phase transfo

Structural Insights and Mechanistic Understanding of Iron-Molybdenum Cofactor Biosynthesis by NifB in Nitrogenase Assembly Process.

NifB, a radical S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) enzyme, is pivotal in the biosynthesis of the iron-molybdenum cofactor (FeMo-co), commonly referred to as the M-cluster. This cofactor, located within the active site of nitrogenase, is essential for the conversion of dinitrogen (N2) to NH3. Recognized as the most intricate metallocluster in nature, FeMo-co biosynthesis involves multiple proteins and a sequence of steps. Of particular significance, NifB directs the fusion of two [Fe4S4] clusters to assemble the 8Fe core, while also incorporating an interstitial carbide. Although NifB has been extensiv…

Inverse Association of Plasma Molybdenum with Metabolic Syndrome in a Chinese Adult Population: A Case-Control Study.

Molybdenum has been found to be associated with metabolic disorders. However, the relationship between molybdenum and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is still unclear. A large case-control study was conducted in a Chinese population from the baseline of Ezhou-Shenzhen cohort. A total of 5356 subjects were included with 2678 MetS and 2678 controls matched by sex and age (±2 years). Medians (IQRs) of plasma molybdenum concentrations were 1.24 μg/L for MetS cases and 1.46 μg/L for controls. After adjustment for multiple covariates, the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MetS were 1.…

Case Report: Compound Heterozygous Variants in MOCS3 Identified in a Chinese Infant With Molybdenum Cofactor Deficiency.

Background: The molybdenum cofactor (Moco) deficiency in humans results in the inactivity of molybdenum-dependent enzymes and is caused by pathogenic variants in MOCS1 (Molybdenum cofactor synthesis 1), MOCS2 (Molybdenum cofactor synthesis 2), and GPHN (Gephyrin). These genes along with MOCS3 (Molybdenum cofactor synthesis 3) are involved in Moco biosynthesis and providing cofactors to Moco-dependent enzymes. Until now, there was no study to confirm that MOCS3 is a causative gene of Moco deficiency. Methods: Detailed clinical information was collected in the pedigree. The Whole-exome sequencin…

Detection of Phosphate in Human Blood Based on a Catalytic Hydrogen Wave at a Molybdenum Phosphide Modified Electrode.

Detection of inorganic phosphate is very important in environmental and health care applications. In this work, we found that phenomenon similar to "catalytic hydrogen wave" occurred on a molybdenum phosphide (MoP) modified electrode in the presence of phosphate, that is, a new wave of catalytic hydrogen evolution appeared before the normal hydrogen evolution reaction. The catalytic hydrogen wave arose from a structure similar to phosphomolybdic acid (noted as MoPO), which was formed by the interaction between phosphate and molybdenum oxides on the surface of the MoP modified electrode, result…

Olefin epoxidation by H2O2/MeCN catalysed by cyclopentadienyloxidotungsten(VI) and molybdenum(VI) complexes: experiments and computations.

Compounds [Cp*(2)M(2)O(5)] (M = Mo, 1; W, 2) are efficient pre-catalysts for cyclooctene (COE) epoxidation by aqueous H(2)O(2) in acetonitrile/toluene. The reaction is quantitative, selective and takes place approximately 50 times faster for the W system (k(obs) = 4.32(9)x10(-4) s(-1) at 55 degrees C and 3x10(-3) M concentration for the dinuclear complex, vs. 1.06(7)x10(-5) s(-1) for the Mo system). The rate law is first order in catalyst and COE substrate (k = 0.138(7) M(-1) s(-1) for the W system at 55 degrees C), whereas increasing the concentration of H(2)O(2) slows down the reaction becau

Determination of ligand binding constants for the iron-molybdenum cofactor of nitrogenase: monomers, multimers, and cooperative behavior.

Equilibrium titrations in N-methylformamide (NMF) of G-25 gel filtered (ox)-state FeMo cofactor [FeMoco(ox)] from Azotobacter vinelandii nitrogenase were carried out using sodium ethanethiolate and followed using UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy. For Fe-Moco(ox), a non-linear least squares (NLLSQ) fit to the data indicated a strong equilibrium thiolate-binding step with Keq = 1.3+/-0.2x10(6) M(-1). With 245 molar excess imidazole, cooperative binding of three ethanethiolates was observed. The best NLLSQ fit gave Keq=2.0+/-0.1x10(5) M(-2) and a Hill coefficient n=2.0+/-0.3. A polyferredoxin with eight [4Fe-4S] clusters as a subunit of molybdenum formylmethanofuran dehydrogenase from Methanosarcina barkeri.

Formylmethanofuran dehydrogenase (Fmd) from Methanosarcina barkeri is a molybdenum iron-sulfur protein involved in methanogenesis. The enzyme contains approximately 30 mol non-heme iron/mol and 30 mol acid-labile sulfur/mol. We report here the cloning and sequencing of the encoding genes, and that these genes form a transcription unit fmdEFACDB. Evidence is provided that the subunit FmdB harbours the molybdenum-containing active site and may bind one [4Fe-4S] cluster. fmdF encodes a protein with four tandemly repeated bacterial-ferredoxin-like domains and is predicted to be a polyferredoxin th…

On-Chip Asymmetric Steering of Phonon Polaritons via Grating-Driven Twisted α-Phase Molybdenum Trioxide Bilayers.

Asymmetric light transmission at the nanoscale constitutes a fundamental challenge and a key goal in integrated photonic circuits. Polaritons in van der Waals (vdWs) materials offer a promising platform for such nanoscale light confinement and control. However, achieving complex and functional vdWs polaritons control across interfaces remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate grating-driven on-chip asymmetric steering of phonon polaritons (PhPs) in hyperbolic vdWs crystal α-MoO3 bilayers that incorporate twisted stacks and engineered interfaces. By combining twist-induced dispersion engineerin
