The effects of spoiler types on audience immersion: an inter-subject correlation study of heart rate.

This study used a between-subjects experimental design to examine how five spoiler conditions, including a complete scene without spoiler, a chaotic scene without spoiler, a video spoiler, a verbal spoiler, and a written spoiler, influenced viewers' narrative engagement, heart rate synchrony measured by inter-subject correlation, and task performance while watching suspenseful film clips. Seventy-six university students were randomly assigned to one of the spoiler groups and viewed clips from the film Revenge. Narrative engagement was assessed using the Narrative Engagement Scale (NES), and EC

Movie-watching evokes ripple-like activity within events and at event boundaries.

Ripples are fast oscillatory events widely recognized as crucial markers for memory consolidation and neural plasticity. These transient bursts of activity are thought to coordinate information transfer between the hippocampus and neocortical areas, providing a temporal framework that supports the stabilization and integration of new memories. However, their role in human memory encoding during naturalistic scenarios remains unexplored. Here, we recorded intracranial electrophysiological data from ten epilepsy patients watching a movie. Ripples were analyzed in the hippocampus and neocortical

Theta phase precession supports memory formation and retrieval of naturalistic experience in humans.

Associating different aspects of experience with discrete events is critical for human memory. A potential mechanism for linking memory components is phase precession, during which neurons fire progressively earlier in time relative to theta oscillations. However, no direct link between phase precession and memory has been established. Here we recorded single-neuron activity and local field potentials in the human medial temporal lobe while participants (n = 22) encoded and retrieved memories of movie clips. Bouts of theta and phase precession occurred following cognitive boundaries during mov

DUbbing Language-therapy CINEma-based in Aphasia post-Stroke (DULCINEA): study protocol for a randomized crossover pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Communication is one of the most important predictors of social reintegration after stroke. Approximately 15-42% of stroke survivors experience post-stroke aphasia. Helping people recover from aphasia is one of the research priorities after a stroke. Our aim is to develop and validate a new therapy integrating dubbing techniques to improve functional communication. METHODS: The research project is structured as three work packages (WP). WP1: development of the dubbed language cinema-based therapy: Two research assistants (a speech therapist and a dubbing actor) will select the cli

Patterns and location of velopharyngeal valving problems: atypical findings on video nasopharyngoscopy.

Patterns of velopharyngeal (VP) valving and the location of velopharyngeal gaps were investigated in 246 consecutive nasopharyngoscopy studies. The predominant pattern of closure was coronal (68 percent), followed by the circular (23 percent), circular with a Passavant's ridge (5 percent), and sagittal (4 percent) patterns. Gaps were found in 181 patients; in 121 they were considered typical (centrally located), in 28 they were in one of the lateral aspects of the valve, and in 32 they were attributed to the shape of the adenoid tissue or to abnormalities in the anatomy or function of the post

Changes in respiratory movements of the human vocal cords during hyperpnea.

Five healthy young subjects were studied to assess the changes in vocal cord movements that occur between resting breathing and hyperpnea. Both hypercapnia and exercise induced decreases in the extent of narrowing of the glottic aperture occurring during expiration. In addition, four of the subjects showed a significant positive rank correlation between the extent of narrowing of the glottis and the observed length of the expiratory phase of the respiratory cycle. These results indicate that the braking of expiratory airflow by movements of the vocal cords toward the midline is reduced during

Abduction motion analysis of hemiplegic shoulders with a fluoroscopic guide.

PURPOSE: We investigated the usefulness of video based, fluoroscopically guided abduction motion analysis of hemiplegic shoulders. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-two stroke patients with Brunnstrom stages 3-4 (Group 1) or 5-6 (Group 2) were enrolled in this study. Patients with shoulder pain and significant spasticity (MAS 2) were excluded. We recorded motion pictures of the abductions of affected and unaffected shoulder joints under an AP fluoroscopic guide. Lateral scapular slide distances (D1: T2- superior angle, D2: T3- scapular spine, D3: T7-inferior angle) were measured at 30 degrees , 60

Moving spiders do not boost visual search in spider fear.

Previous research on attention to fear-relevant stimuli has largely focused on static pictures or drawings, and thus did not consider the potential effect of natural motion. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of motion on attentional capture in spider-fearful and non-fearful participants by using point-light stimuli and naturalistic videos. Point-light stimuli consist of moving dots representing joints and thereby visualizing biological motion (e.g. of a walking human or cat) without needing a visible body. Spider-fearful (n = 30) and non-spider-fearful (n = 31) participants completed a

Chaotic echo motion in the left ventricular cavity. Visualization of ruptured chordae tendineae of the mitral valve by real-time two-dimensional echocardiography.

The aim of the present study is to perform a detailed analysis of the spot echoes which show chaotic motion of the left ventricular cavity of patients with ruptured chordae tendineae. The subjects were 12 patients with surgically documented ruptured chordae tendineae. They were carefully examined preoperatively by real-time two-dimensional echocardiography with a commercially available wide-angle phased array system (Toshiba SSH-11A). An abnormal moving spot echo was often seen instantaneously in the left ventricle. Its motion was chaotic, and it moved both longitudinally and laterally. Latera

Position of the prosthesis components in total ankle replacement and the effect on motion at the replaced joint.

PURPOSE: In some cases of total ankle replacement, perfect alignment of the prosthetic components is not achieved. This study analyses the extent to which component positioning is critical for the final range of motion. METHODS: Fourteen patients undergoing total ankle replacement were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively at seven and 13 months follow-up. X-ray pictures of the ankle were taken in static double leg stance, i.e. at neutral joint position, and in maximum plantarflexion and dorsiflexion. Measurements were obtained by a specially devised computer program based on anatomical

Higher Intersubject Variability in Neural Response to Narrative Social Stimuli Among Youth With Higher Social Anxiety.

OBJECTIVE: Social anxiety is associated with alterations in socioemotional processing, but the pathophysiology remains poorly understood. Movies present an opportunity to examine more naturalistic socioemotional processing by providing narrative and sensory context to emotion cues. This study aimed to characterize associations between neural response to contextualized social cues and social anxiety symptoms in children. METHOD: Data from the Healthy Brain Network (final N = 740; age range 5-15 years) were split into discovery and replication samples to maximize generalizability of findings. A

[Fight against infection in early cinema - a retrospective in times of COVID-19].

Contagious diseases and other conditions from the field of internal medicine have always kept the world on its edge. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has recently reminded us of this with all its terror. If one looks for a historical equivalent, the Spanish flu impresses with as many similarities as differences. However, many of these aspects are difficult to measure by statistics. How were the waves of infections perceived socially almost 100 years ago? What significance did they have in the lives of the ordinary people? And in what light was medical world showcased? An insightful way to get to the bo

Affective and cortical EEG gamma responses to emotional movies in women with high vs low traits of empathy.

The present study sought to investigate how differences in trait empathy can influence emotional reactivity to a specific set of affective categories. Forty-one female students, divided in High (HE, n = 20) and Low (LE, n = 21) trait empathy, watched eight validated movie clips divided in four emotional categories (Erotic, Fear, Compassion and Neutral) while subjective evaluation of emotion and EEG gamma activity were recorded. Analysis of self-reports revealed that HE compared to LE exhibited an increased arousal level to all emotional clips. Concerning EEG data, the HE group showed a greater
