A novel technique for preoperative localization of pulmonary nodules using a mixture of tissue adhesive and iohexol under computed tomography guidance: A 140 patient single-center study.

BACKGROUND: The increase in the incidence of pulmonary nodules has made computed tomography (CT) screening a requirement for diagnosis and treatment. Small pulmonary nodule detection during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) or thoracotomy is frequently challenging; however, accurate and efficient localization of nodules is critical for precise resection. Herein, we introduce and evaluate the feasibility and safety of a novel technique for preoperative pulmonary nodule localization. METHODS: From March 2018 to December 2019, 140 patients with 153 pulmonary nodules measuring <2 cm in

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma of the lung.

A 44-year-old woman was found to have an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray during a regular health checkup, and visited our department. Chest computed tomography showed multiple nodular shadows in both lungs. The patient had no history of neoplasm except for myomectomy for uterine leiomyoma 6 years previously. Eighteen months later, the nodules showed a gradual increase in size, and video-assisted thoracoscopic biopsy of a nodule was performed. Histopathologically, the pulmonary nodule was composed of benign smooth muscle cells proliferating in fascicles, consistent with the diagnosis of benign

Melatonin enhances radiofrequency-induced NK antitumor immunity, causing cancer metabolism reprogramming and inhibition of multiple pulmonary tumor development.

Surgery is the common treatment for early lung cancer with multiple pulmonary nodules, but it is often accompanied by the problem of significant malignancy of other nodules in non-therapeutic areas. In this study, we found that a combined treatment of local radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and melatonin (MLT) greatly improved clinical outcomes for early lung cancer patients with multiple pulmonary nodules by minimizing lung function injury and reducing the probability of malignant transformation or enlargement of nodules in non-ablated areas. Mechanically, as demonstrated in an associated mouse l

[ANCA-negative granulomatosis with polyangiitis: a case report].

We reported a case of 73-year-old male with multiple pulmonary nodules and cavities. The patient was admitted with a chief complaint of "dry cough with shortness of breath for 3 months". Chest CT showed multiple irregular masses, nodules, and patchy lesions in both lungs, accompanied by the formation of cavities. He also had anemia and renal dysfunction. Despite given empirical anti-infective and anti-tuberculosis treatments, the pulmonary nodules progressed, and the cavities enlarged. Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) were negative twice. Bronchoscopic biopsy was performed. The mu

Necrobiotic Pulmonary Nodules in Ulcerative Colitis: A Rare Case Report.

BACKGROUND Necrobiotic pulmonary nodules represent an exceptionally rare extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), comprising conditions such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These nodules pose significant diagnostic challenges, often mimicking autoimmune pathologies like sarcoidosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other granulomatous diseases, thereby complicating the clinical management of affected patients. The rarity and nonspecific clinical presentation of necrobiotic pulmonary nodules necessitate a reliance on a combination of radiological and histological f

Introduction of the Danish Lung Nodule Registry: A part of the Danish Lung Cancer Registry.

BACKGROUND: The majority of lung cancer cases are diagnosed late, resulting in poor prognosis and high mortality rates. Early detection and management of lung cancer can improve patient outcomes and reduce mortality rates. Pulmonary nodules are key factors in the early detection of lung cancer, they are common in high-risk populations and require correct classification to determine whether they are benign or malignant. Over the last decade a steep increase in the number of thoracic CT scans has been seen in Denmark, resulting in substantial resources allocated to CT follow-up of incidentally d

CTCs Detection and Whole-exome Sequencing Might Be Used to Differentiate Benign and Malignant Pulmonary Nodules.

BACKGROUND: Low-density computed tomography (LDCT) improved early lung cancer diagnosis but introduces an excess of false-positive pulmonary nodules data. Hence, accurate diagnosis of early-stage lung cancer remains challenging. The purpose of the study was to assess the feasibility of using circulating tumour cells (CTCs) to differentiate malignant from benign pulmonary nodules. METHODS: 122 patients with suspected malignant pulmonary nodules detected on chest CT in preparation for surgery were prospectively recruited. Peripheral blood samples were collected before surgery, and CTCs were ide

Reducing uncertainty in cancer risk estimation for patients with indeterminate pulmonary nodules using an integrated deep learning model.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with indeterminate pulmonary nodules (IPN) with an intermediate to a high probability of lung cancer generally undergo invasive diagnostic procedures. Chest computed tomography image and clinical data have been in estimating the pretest probability of lung cancer. In this study, we apply a deep learning network to integrate multi-modal data from CT images and clinical data (including blood-based biomarkers) to improve lung cancer diagnosis. Our goal is to reduce uncertainty and to avoid morbidity, mortality, over- and undertreatment of patients with IPNs. METHOD: We use a

Computed tomography patterns of pulmonary and pleural involvement in lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary and pleural involvement is fairly common in patients with lymphoma, especially in the setting of progressive or recurrent disease. Pleuropulmonary involvement in lymphoma may occur as a single pattern or as a combination of multiple patterns which can often mimic unrelated pathologies. METHODS: Review of our institutional database from 01 Jan 2015 to 04 Oct 2017 revealed 90 patients with pulmonary and/or pleural lesions attributable to lymphoma. These lesions were classified into various categories, and the pattern of involvement was evaluated. RESULTS: Pulmonary involv

Nodular pulmonary amyloidosis in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

We describe a 67-year-old white woman with a long-standing active rheumatoid arthritis who refused treatment. Chest roentgenograms performed in 2000 revealed a pulmonary nodule in the mid-left lung. Progression of the nodule was followed annually by computerized tomography (CT). In the last CT in 2002, we observed multiple nodules in both lungs in the absence of lymph gland involvement. The patient was operated by video-thoracoscopy to resect one of the pulmonary nodules. Pathological examination of the excised tissue revealed amyloid A-type (AA) amyloidosis. Although pulmonary amyloidosis is

Successful rituximab treatment in a patient with ANCA-negative granulomatosis with polyangitis: A case report.

A 68-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for further evaluation of fever, nasal congestion, deafness, and multiple pulmonary nodules refractory to antibiotic use. Despite negative findings of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies, she was diagnosed with granulomatosis with polyangiitis based on the analysis of biopsy specimens of pulmonary nodules. The administrations of oral prednisolone and six intravenous cyclophosphamide (IVCY) resulted in the prompt relief of symptoms and disappearance of pulmonary nodules. However, 3 months after the completion of IVCY therapy, nasal congestion a

Preoperative computed tomography-guided transscapular sens-cure needle localization for pulmonary nodule located behind the scapula.

BACKGROUND: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is an approach that is commonly used to resect pulmonary nodules (PNs). However, when these PNs are located behind the scapula, a transscapular access approach is generally required. In this study, the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of preoperative computed tomography (CT)-guided Sens-cure needle (SCN) localization was assessed for PNs located behind the scapula. METHODS: From January 2020 - June 2022, a total of 122 PN patients in our hospital underwent preoperative CT-guided SCN localization and subsequent VATS resection, of whom 12

Pleuropulmonary Paragonimiasis with Multiple Nodules in the Pleura.

An asymptomatic 47-year-old woman was admitted with pleural effusion and pulmonary infiltrates 1 month after ingesting raw wild boar and deer meat. Both her blood and pleural fluid were eosinophilic. Thoracoscopy revealed multiple nodules of the pleura, and biopsy samples of the nodules showed necrosis with epithelioid cell granulomas. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was positive for antibodies against Paragonimus westermani, and the patient was successfully treated with praziquantel. This is the first reported case of pulmonary or pleuropulmonary paragonimiasis where several pleural nodu

Case report. Metastatic pulmonary calcification in renal failure: a new HRCT pattern.

A 56-year-old male with chronic renal failure presented with a 6 month history of progressive dyspnoea. High resolution CT of the chest showed multiple, peripheral, centrilobular nodules in the upper and mid zones, consistent with metastatic pulmonary calcification. Some of these pulmonary nodules showed ring calcification, a pattern that to our knowledge has not been described before. Calcification was also seen in the segmental pulmonary arteries, bronchi, trachea and subcutaneous vessels of the chest wall.

"Split" combined subsegmentectomy: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Clinically, some specific pulmonary nodules have safe resection margins that are located in multiple subsegments in the center of lung lobe. It is therefore difficult to ensure the resection margins through conventional combined subsegmentectomy or wedge resection, and thus lobectomy is required. For these types of pulmonary nodules, "split" operation was performed to fully inflate the reserved lung tissues on both sides. This study aimed to preliminarily assess the feasibility and safety of "split" operation. METHODS: Cases with these types of pulmonary nodules were selected. Som

Pulmonary Scedosporium apiospermum Infection with Pulmonary Tumorlet in an Immunocompetent Patient.

Scedosporium apiospermum is an opportunistic fungus that can cause various types of infections, including localized infections and life-threatening disseminated infections, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Treatment is especially challenging due to its multidrug resistance. We herein report the case of a 73-year-old woman who was non-immunocompromised but developed S. apiospermum lung infection and a pulmonary tumorlet. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the coexistence of pulmonary S. apiospermum infection and tumorlet. The lung lesion was successfully treated by surgica
