[A dancer, a groomer, a folk artist and a viola player - case reports of occupational musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous system diseases].

Work-related diseases of the musculoskeletal and the peripheral nervous system are classified as overload cumulative microtrauma diseases, resulting from chronic overload and/or damage of specific neuromusculoskeletal structures. Occupational activities which predispose to them are characterised by monotypy (repetition of movements during a significant part of the working shift). Authors described 4 cases of women with musculoskeletal and peripheral nervous system disorders qualified as occupational background just in the 2nd instance of medical certification. Detailed analysis of occupational

Reliability and Validity of a Japanese-language and Culturally Adapted Version of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society Scoring System for the Lower Extremity.

BACKGROUND: The Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scoring system is a widely used functional evaluation tool for patients treated for musculoskeletal tumors. Although the MSTS scoring system has been validated in English and Brazilian Portuguese, a Japanese version of the MSTS scoring system has not yet been validated. QUESTIONS/PURPOSE: We sought to determine whether a Japanese-language translation of the MSTS scoring system for the lower extremity had (1) sufficient reliability and internal consistency, (2) adequate construct validity, and (3) reasonable criterion validity compared with

Magnetic resonance imaging versus musculoskeletal ultrasonography in detecting inflammatory arthropathy in systemic sclerosis patients with hand arthralgia.

The aim of the study was the detection of inflammatory arthropathy in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) with arthralgia using musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MSUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to compare between MRI versus MSUS detecting musculoskeletal abnormalities and find out its relation with other clinical and laboratory parameters. Sixteen SSc patients with hand arthralgia had a baseline MSUS for their hands. Six months later, patients had a second MSUS and MRI with gadolinium of their most symptomatic hand. Of the 16 patients examined by MSUS, it was found that on bas

Whole-Body MRI of Inflammatory and Infectious Musculoskeletal Diseases: Emphasis on Chronic Nonbacterial Osteomyelitis and Systemic Inflammatory Disorders.

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WBMRI) has emerged as the primary imaging tool for multifocal inflammatory and infectious musculoskeletal diseases. By extending coverage from the vertex to the toes in a single, radiation-free examination, WBMRI enables the detection of clinically occult lesions, disease-specific pattern recognition across bone marrow, joints, entheses, and muscles, and objective monitoring of disease activity and treatment response. This review describes the WBMRI findings-with detailed imaging features and distribution patterns-in chronic nonbacterial osteitis, SAPHO s

Molecular basis of individual locomotor function: Integrated understanding of gene expression regulation in the development and homeostasis of the musculoskeletal system.

This review examines the molecular mechanisms controlling the development and homeostasis of the musculoskeletal system through gene expression regulation. It introduces key discoveries from basic transcriptional control to advanced mechanotransduction pathways, focusing on our contributions including the EMBRYS database for transcription factor expression analysis and the identification of RP58 in muscle development and Mohawk (Mkx) in tendon formation. We also elucidated the role of miR-140 as a critical regulator in cartilage development and homeostasis. This microRNA is specifically expres…

Determining a musculoskeletal system's pre-stretched state using continuum-mechanical forward modelling and joint range optimization.

The subject-specific range of motion (RoM) of a musculoskeletal joint system is balanced by pre-tension levels of individual muscles, which affects their contraction capability. Such an inherent pre-tension or pre-stretch of muscles is not measureable with in vivo experiments. Using a 3D continuum mechanical forward simulation approach for motion analysis of the musculoskeletal system of the forearm with 3 flexor and 2 extensor muscles, we developed an optimization process to determine the muscle fibre pre-stretches for an initial arm position, which is given human dataset. We used RoM values …

Utilising redundancy in musculoskeletal systems for adaptive stiffness and muscle failure compensation: a model-free inverse statics approach.

Vertebrates possess a biomechanical structure with redundant muscles, enabling adaptability in uncertain and complex environments. Harnessing this inspiration, musculoskeletal systems offer advantages like variable stiffness and resilience to actuator failure and fatigue. Despite their potential, the complex structure presents modelling challenges that are difficult to explicitly formulate and control. This difficulty arises from the need for comprehensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, including details such as muscle arrangement, and fully accessible muscle and joint states. Whilst…

Inflammatory arthritis in systemic sclerosis is associated with elevated C-reactive protein and requires musculoskeletal ultrasound for reliable detection.

OBJECTIVES: About 25% of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) have elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Specific causes of CRP elevation are unknown so far. We aimed to investigate whether inflammatory arthritis is associated with CRP elevation. Furthermore, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of clinical examination compared to musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) for detection of arthritis. METHODS: Sixty-five patients with SSc (51 females) were enrolled and allocated into a CRP-positive (CRP+, n = 20; CRP elevated for at least two years prior to enrollment) and a CRP-negative

'It's about time'. Dissemination and evaluation of a global health systems strengthening roadmap for musculoskeletal health - insights and future directions.

Actions towards the health-related Sustainable Development Goal 3.4 typically focus on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) associated with premature mortality, with less emphasis on NCDs associated with disability, such as musculoskeletal conditions-the leading contributor to the global burden of disability. Can systems strengthening priorities for an underprioritised NCD be codesigned, disseminated and evaluated? A 'roadmap' for strengthening global health systems for improved musculoskeletal health was launched in 2021. In this practice paper, we outline dissemination efforts for this Roadmap a

Comparison of articular manifestations of mixed connective tissue disease and systemic lupus erythematosus on clinical examination and musculoskeletal ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Polyarthritis is common to both mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Apart from being erosive and deforming in the former, we speculated that it was more common and the extent of joints involved would be higher in MCTD. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that included patients with MCTD aged 18-75 years fulfilling the Kasukawa criteria. An equal number of patients with SLE matched for disease duration and gender were included. Clinical manifestations were compared between patients with MCTD and with SLE. Examination of joints was do

[Pain of the musculoskeletal system of unknown origin in immigrants. Vitamin D3 deficiency caused by insufficient exposure of the skin to sunlight].

We present two patients with vitamin D3 deficiency caused by insufficient exposure of the skin to sunlight. The deficiency was due to the dark pigmentation of the skin in the first case and caused by constant wearing of veil and all-covering clothes as well as by insufficient exposure to sunlight in the second case. Both patients developed osteomalacia with musculoskeletal problems; they had typical laboratory test results (elevated alkaline phosphatase and serum calcium in the low normal range) and radiologically evident, non-dislocated fractures (insufficiency fractures). Treatment with vita

Assessing central nervous system contributions to accelerate musculoskeletal pain diagnosis and treatment (AsCent): protocol for a mixed-method, prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic musculoskeletal pain often extends beyond pathology alone. Augmented central pain processing is linked to pain severity, persistence and treatment outcomes. A practical clinical tool is needed to identify individuals likely to have persistent or worsening pain, likely due to augmented central pain mechanisms. Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) offers mechanistic insight, while the Central Aspects of Pain (CAP) Questionnaire captures symptom profiles that potentially reflect central mechanisms. Combining a brief clinical QST protocol with CAP may support early risk stratif

Pectoral myology of limb-reduced worm lizards (Squamata, Amphisbaenia) suggests decoupling of the musculoskeletal system during the evolution of body elongation.

BACKGROUND: The evolution of elongated body forms in tetrapods has a strong influence on the musculoskeletal system, including the reduction of pelvic and pectoral girdles, as well as the limbs. However, despite extensive research in this area it still remains unknown how muscles within and around bony girdles are affected by these reductions. Here we investigate this issue using fossorial amphisbaenian reptiles, or worm lizards, as a model system, which show substantial variation in the degree of reductions of girdles and limbs. Using iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography (diceCT…

Creating an Optimal In Vivo Environment to Enhance Outcomes Using Cell Therapy to Repair/Regenerate Injured Tissues of the Musculoskeletal System.

Following most injuries to a musculoskeletal tissue which function in unique mechanical environments, an inflammatory response occurs to facilitate endogenous repair. This is a process that usually yields functionally inferior scar tissue. In the case of such injuries occurring in adults, the injury environment no longer expresses the anabolic processes that contributed to growth and maturation. An injury can also contribute to the development of a degenerative process, such as osteoarthritis. Over the past several years, researchers have attempted to use cellular therapies to enhance the repa

Differences in brain structure and theta burst stimulation-induced plasticity implicate the corticomotor system in loss of function after musculoskeletal injury.

Traumatic musculoskeletal injury (MSI) may involve changes in corticomotor structure and function, but direct evidence is needed. To determine the corticomotor basis of MSI, we examined interactions among skeletomotor function, corticospinal excitability, corticomotor structure (cortical thickness and white matter microstructure), and intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS)-induced plasticity. Nine women with unilateral anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL) 3.2 ± 1.1 yr prior to the study and 11 matched controls (CON) completed an MRI session followed by an offline plasticity-probing pr
