The nail is a subject of global importance for dermatologists, podiatrists and surgeons. Nail avulsion is a frequently undertaken, yet simple, intriguing procedure. The information on nail product safety is currently limited, but has been increasing in recent years. This increasing research has shown that some ingredients in nail products are hazardous and can lead to both dermatologic and systemic diseases. This risk is present for nail product consumers and is increased for nail technicians. Another concern with the nail products being used is the mislabeling of ingredients. This paper aims to assess the current literature on nail product safety, promote consumer safety, and encourage the involvement of dermatologists in promoting safe nail product use.

Nail-patella syndrome (NPS) is a hereditary disorder characterized by fingernail changes, elbow dysplasia, hypoplastic patellae, and presence of iliac horns. Clinical presentation can be subtle, and the spectrum of presentation often makes NPS a challenging diagnosis. Herein, we describe three family members with nail-patella syndrome who presented with different features and varying severity. The opportunity to recognize this rare syndrome in three linear generations provided a unique insight into NPS, and a moment to appreciate the random and unpredictable clinical presentation.

Patients with partially destroyed fingernails tend to hide them, and such patients often do not find help because fingernails are considered of little functional value. To improve the aesthetic appearance of such nails, a simple excision of the destroyed nail matrix can stimulate the growth of the residual healthy matrix and regenerate the nail. The congenital palmar nail syndrome consists of a triad of palmar nail, absent finger flexion and abnormalities of the distal phalanx. There are two main theories about the pathogenesis of this syndrome: the ancestral reversion theory and the duplication theory. In this paper, similarities between a conjoined nail in conjoined twins and the palmar nail syndrome are described to support the duplication theory.

We reviewed longitudinal nail biopsies performed at Henry Ford Hospital on patients with acquired nail dystrophies to see whether the procedure did, indeed, provide useful diagnostic information and to see which microscopic features were most helpful in histopathologic diagnosis. Clinical diagnoses included psoriasis, lichen planus, Darier's disease, isolated longitudinal defects, and diffuse thickening.
