PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the recent literature regarding select cytokines involved in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps. Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps is generally characterized by eosinophilic infiltration and a Th2-biased cytokine profile. However, the mechanisms that lead to nasal polyps are not clear.

The aim of this study was to examine the pathophysiological role of NO (nitric oxide) and MDA (malondialdehyde) in tissue in patients with nasal polyposis. We measured nitrite/nitrate (Nitrite/Nitrate; NO2-/NO3-) and MDA in tissue and plasma of NP patients (n=20) and controls (n=20). MDA level expressed as the concentration of substances reacting to thiobarbituric acid and production of NO (concentration of nitrite/nitrate in plasma) by the Griess reaction were determined. OBJECTIVE: To observe the ultrastructural feature and ECP expression in nasal polyps, and aim to explore its role in the pathogenesis of CRSwNP.
METHOD: 5 CRSwNP, 5 CRS and 5 control patients underwent sinus surgery were gathered to detect its ultrastructure and expression of ECP by in situ hybridization and electron microscopy technique.
RESULT: Under electron microscopy, the eosinophilic cells in CRSwNP group increased, its membrane was intact but fold, the feature of pseudopodium, degranulation and cavitation were all found. The expression level of ECP mRNA was up-regulated.

We present an isolated purely intranasal meningoencephalocele, presenting as a nasal polyp in an adult, which is uncommon. Based on a review of the literature, we emphasize that nasal obstruction may be the only presenting symptom of an intranasal meningoencephalocele.

Three patients were observed who had small angioma in the region of the middle nasal passage. Angioma was the cause of recurrent nasal bleeding. In one of the patients the vascular tumor was covered with massive edemous polyps for which the patient was referred for polypotomy. Introduction of computed tomography, endoscopic methods of examination allows detection and assessment of the tumor spread, selective angiography followed by embolization enables operations with minimal blood loss.

Infection is a major problem after transplantation. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common viral infection affecting transplant patients. We describe a case of CMV infection with rare clinical manifestation in the form of nasal polyp. Patient presented 6 weeks following renal transplantation with history of fever and stuffy nose. On evaluation he was found to have nasal polyp which was excised. Histopathology revealed characteristic CMV inclusion bodies. Patient responded to ganciclovir therapy and is presently doing well eighteen months after transplantation.

The existence of a combined benign schwannoma and lymphoma presenting as a nasal polyp has not been described in the English literature. We are reporting this rare combination in a 50-year-old male whose presenting symptoms were nasal obstruction, nasal deformity and headache. Examination of the left nasal cavity revealed a mass which was confined to the nose on computed tomography (CT) scan examination. Histopathology of the mass revealed a major component to be a benign schwannoma and a minor component a large B-cell lymphoma.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the infiltration and activation of eosinophils in nasal polyps.
METHOD: Nasal polyps from sixteen patients were investigated. The samples were stained with Chromotrope 2R histochemical and ABC immunohistochemical methods.

METHODS: The expression of MMP9, MMP2 and MMP3 was studied in 32 nasal polyps by immunohistochemical method.

In conclusion, this is a study of a 52-year-old white male who had the removal of a benign appearing nasal polyp with the surprising diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma. The clinical course has been completely benign since surgery for over two years. This should alert physicians to the possibility that benign appearing polyps, on rare occasion, can be malignant, and particularly those polyps occurring on the septum should be carefully investigated. It happened that this patient had a plasmacytoma, and a search for the presence of multiple myeloma is warranted.

A 15-year-old boy presented with unilateral nasal polyps. Pathological examination showed submucosal granulomas and fungal organisms with occasionally septate hyphae.
