Hurricanes, Neighborhood Disadvantage, and Cardiopulmonary Health in US Veterans.

IMPORTANCE: Global climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of hurricanes, which are associated with adverse health outcomes. Veterans may be more susceptible to the health impacts of hurricanes because of prior military exposures. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hurricane exposure is associated with cardiovascular and respiratory events among US veterans. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included US veterans enrolled in Veteran Health Administration (VHA) primary care who lived in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy (2011-2013) or Hurricane Har

Assessing Upstream Structural and Social Drivers of Health in Breast Cancer Survivorship: The Pathways Study Neighborhood Resource.

BACKGROUND: Research has linked neighborhood factors (e.g., air pollution, obesogenic environment) often associated with residential segregation to cancer disparities, including mortality. Limited research has explored these multilevel drivers of health, recognizing residential segregation as upstream of neighborhood social, built, and physical environment attributes. In this study, we describe the neighborhood data resource of the Pathways Study, a diverse cohort of women diagnosed with breast cancer. METHODS: Using data from multiple sources, including the 2010 US Census, we appended census

The Association Between Neighbourhood Leisure Amenities and Chinese Older Adults' Depressive Symptoms: The Mediating Role of Social Capital.

With the growing prevalence of mental health problems among older adults, this paper investigates the association between neighbourhood leisure amenities and depressive symptoms among older adults in China, and further explores the mediating role of social capital in this relationship. The results suggest that neighbourhood leisure amenities significantly reduce older adults' depressive symptoms (α = -0.124, 95% CI [-0.206, -0.042]), with stronger associations observed among those who are low-income, aged 75 years and above, female, and living in rural areas. Mediation analyses show that socia

The Social Ecology of Psychotherapy: Community-Level Influences on Adolescent Mental Health Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Effective treatment for depression and anxiety in adolescence is a public health concern. Although psychotherapies for depression and anxiety exist, youth psychotherapies are less effective when delivered in community settings compared to research settings. A social-ecological model, which considers individual-, interpersonal-, and community-level influences on wellbeing, posits that understanding multi-level factors can help us understand this drop in treatment effectiveness. This study employs a socioecological model to examine the influence of neighborhood factors on depression a

Hospital Formula Supplementation Postbreastfeeding Initiation, Neighborhood Economy, and Race.

IMPORTANCE: Breastfeeding supports lifelong health, but socioeconomic and racial disparities persist. Biases in hospital formula supplementation practices may be an underlying contributor. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether nonmedically indicated hospital formula supplementation of term-born breastfed newborns is associated with neighborhood socioeconomic status and/or maternal race. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Provincial registry data were used to build a cohort of all live births of term-born singleton infants who initiated breastfeeding in Ontario, Canada, hospitals from April 1, 2015 t

The relationship of neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and pretreatment cancer-related cognitive impairment in women with breast cancer: A post hoc analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Up to 30% of women with breast cancer experience cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) even before they receive treatment. The authors conducted a post hoc analysis to examine the relationship between neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage and CRCI in treatment-naive postmenopausal women with early stage breast cancer. METHODS: The Exercise Program in Cancer and Cognition was a single-blind, 6-month, randomized controlled trial evaluating moderate-intensity aerobic exercise versus usual activity on neurocognitive function. By using baseline data from treatment-naive particip

Neighborhood social fragmentation in relation to impaired mismatch negativity among youth at clinical high risk for psychosis and healthy comparisons.

Impairments in mismatch negativity (MMN) are well-established in schizophrenia and have been observed in youth at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P). Prior animal studies have shown that social isolation may be related to neurobiological changes, including reduced MMN-like responses and schizophrenia-like behaviors. In parallel, neighborhood social fragmentation has been shown to be associated with the onset of psychosis. This study investigates the association between neighborhood social fragmentation and MMN impairment among CHR-P youth and healthy comparisons (HC). Data were collected

Neighborhood Social Disorganization in Early Adolescence and Substance Use Trajectories into Young Adulthood: The Moderating Role of Effortful Control and Parental Substance Use.

Adolescents living in socially disorganized neighborhoods may consume substances more frequently. Although some evidence suggests that such potential neighborhood influences persist into young adulthood, findings remain inconsistent. More research is needed that includes different indicators of neighborhood social disorganization, substance use outcomes, and family- and individual-level moderating factors. To address these gaps, this study examined the associations between three indicators of neighborhood social disorganization—social fragmentation, socioeconomic deprivation, and disorder—in e

Food Insecurity, Neighborhood Disorder, and Homelessness among People with Serious Mental Illness.

The health effects of social conditions such as income, education, and employment have been demonstrated to be persistent and wide-reaching. In this study, we examine the effect of social determinants of health, those conditions in which people live, among individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) who are actively engaged with mental health services. Using a sample of 203 clients at a community mental health clinic, this study (1) explores the prevalence of three social determinants of health: food insecurity, homelessness, and neighborhood disorder, and (2) assesses their associations w

Factors Associated with Progression to Type 2 Diabetes among Women with Gestational Diabetes.

While both individual- and neighborhood-level factors play a role in the progression from gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), few studies have simultaneously examined these two sets of factors. In this retrospective cohort study of 3567 women with a history of GDM, we used multilevel survival analysis to quantify T2DM risk associated with patient-level and neighborhood-level factors. During a mean follow-up of 2.2 years, 195 women (5.5%) developed T2DM. Statistically significant risk factors of T2DM progression included Black or Asian race, preeclampsia, fam

School party culture as a driver of cocaine use among Norwegian adolescents: A cross-classified multilevel analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent substance use typically occurs within peer contexts and is influenced by characteristics of neighborhoods and the cultural environments of the schools adolescents attend. This study aimed to (i) examine variation in cocaine use among adolescents in Oslo, Norway, based on neighborhood of residence and high school affiliation; (ii) assess the significance of school-based party cultures; and (iii) identify individual-level correlates. METHODS: The study used data from the Young in Oslo 2023 survey, which collected information from a population-based sample of senior high s

Trajectories of Physical Violence Against Latinas and Black Women: The Protective Role of Parents, Neighborhoods, and Schools.

Understanding the heterogeneous experiences of violence experienced by Black and Latina women over the life course is critical to prevention. We identified four physical violence trajectories experienced by 361 Black and Latina women followed from ages 14 to 39: low/none (44.0%), persistent-moderate (36.8%), peak in the 20s (11.9%), and persistent-high (7.2%) violence exposure. Childhood abuse predicted membership in the three violence-exposed groups, whereas parental closeness, school academic orientation, and neighborhood safety were protective factors. Public health interventions aimed at p

Beyond the Guidelines: Exploring the Prevalence and Correlates of No-to-Low Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity Among US Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Although many studies examine adolescent physical activity (PA) guideline adherence, few focus on the lowest end of the PA spectrum-engaging in no-to-low moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA). METHODS: This study characterized cross-sectional and longitudinal patterns of device-measured no-to-low MVPA among a cohort of US adolescents and examined sociodemographic and neighborhood-level correlates. This secondary analysis used data from years 2 and 4 of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. Participants wore a Fitbit Charge HR 2 on their nondominant wrist 24 hours per day for

Fine particulate matter air pollution and longitudinal gray matter development changes during early adolescence: variation by neighborhood disadvantage level.

The adolescent brain is vulnerable to ambient air pollution. Importantly, community-level factors - such as neighborhood disadvantage - that co-occur with air pollution may further enhance this vulnerability and impact brain development. The current study investigated if neighborhood disadvantage moderates the association between residential fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution and adolescent brain development, including longitudinal changes in cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical/white matter volume from ages 9-13 years (n = 8321 participants from the ABCD Study®; 12,634 obs

Staffing and Antipsychotic Medication Use in Nursing Homes and Neighborhood Deprivation.

IMPORTANCE: Inappropriate use of antipsychotic medications in nursing homes is a growing public health concern. Residents exposed to higher levels of socioeconomic deprivation in the area around a nursing home may be currently exposed, or have a long history of exposure, to more noise pollution, higher crime rates, and have less opportunities to safely go outside the facility, which may contribute to psychological stress and increased risk of receiving antipsychotic medications inappropriately. However, it is unclear whether neighborhood deprivation is associated with use of inappropriate anti

Temporal and Spatial Trends of Adverse Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes in a Sample of Births from a Public Hospital in Chile.

Understanding temporal and spatial trends in pregnancy and birth outcomes within an urban area is important for the monitoring of health indicators of a population. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all births in the public hospital of Temuco, a medium-sized city in Southern Chile between 2009 and 2016 (n = 17,237). Information on adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, as well as spatial and maternal characteristics (insurance type, employment, smoking, age, and overweight/obesity), was collected from medical charts. Home addresses were geocoded and assigned to neighborhood. We teste
