Conventional therapy for postoperative bladder neck contracture (BNC) has been associated with a high recurrence rate. Fifty bladder neck contractures were treated with neodymium (Nd):YAG laser using a contact technique. There were eight recurrences, seven of which were managed successfully with a second treatment. Nd:YAG laser disintegration is a safe and effective therapy for postoperative bladder neck contracture.

Endobronchial treatment has an expanding role in the treatment of tracheobronchial tumors. Most patients are treated in this way for the palliation of dyspnea caused by a tumor located in a major airway. In cases where immediate relief is required, prompt control is better achieved by the neodymium-YAG laser or by stents. These two modalities and their indications and limitations in the endoscopic management of acute respiratory failure related to tracheobronchial malignancies are discussed.

The case of a 25-year-old patient who underwent circumcision and Neodymium-YAG laser treatment for giant condylomata acuminata of the penis is presented. Two cycles of interferon therapy were administered postoperatively, each comprising beta-interferons and recombinant gamma-interferons. This combination therapy provided an excellent cosmetic and functional result and the patient remains disease-free 15 months following surgery.

Rhinophyma is a rare manifestation of rosacea. It is clinically characterized by sebaceous hypertrophy, fibrosis, and telangiectasia. Usually, it is considered as a cosmetic defect; however, in some cases, it might cause problems with nasal breathing and food consumption which forces the need for treatment. The following article presents the effectiveness of laser treatment with the neodymium-yttrium-aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG), carbon dioxide laser (CO2), and fractional CO2 laser.

A 74-year-old woman developed capsule contraction associated with hypotony and choroidal effusion 18 months after uneventful phacoemulsification with 3-piece poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lens implantation. Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed ciliary body detachment and stretched zonules. A radial neodymium: YAG anterior capsulotomy was performed, resulting in the resolution of the ciliary body detachment and choroidal effusion as well as in normal intraocular pressure over 4 days.

An inflammatory pseudotumour of the lung in an achondroplastic woman is described. The occurrence of both conditions in the same patient probably represents a coincidental finding. However, recurrent pulmonary infections, as frequently seen in achondroplasia, may be relevant, because a history of antecedent infection is noted in one third of cases of inflammatory pseudotumours. Despite extensive debridement of the pseudotumour by neodymium yttrium aluminium garnet (NdYAG) laser therapy, early recurrence occurred.

INTRODUCTION: Macular hemorrhages result in a sudden and profound loss of vision. The primary treatment modalities include observation, intravitreal injection of antiangiogenic drugs, neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet hialoidotomy, intravitreal injection of gas with or without tissue plasminogen activator, as monotherapy or combined with surgery. The authors suggest that Meniere's disease may arise as a psychovegetative syndrome with impairment of labyrinthine homeostasis. It is thought valid to distruct the cupular receptor of the horizontal bony semicircular canal by means of impulse neodymium laser radiation brought to the ampullare bone wall via quartz light guide. Short- and long-term effects of such laser treatment are available. This technique of laser destruction is symptomatic, aimed at relief of severe episodes of vertigo.

The holmium laser is a recent addition to the urologist's armamentarium, being used primarily for the destruction of urinary calculi. Its use as a tool for ablation of the prostate has not been previously described. Our initial experience with 110 patients who have undergone a combination procedure using the Nd:YAG laser for standard circumferential coagulation followed by holmium laser ablation is reported. A series of pigmented rabbit eyes were treated with pulsed 10 msec (free running mode) neodymium:YAG laser burns to achieve transscleral cyclocoagulation. Grossly evident burns were created in the ciliary body with laser pulses of 1.5 joules of energy. Sustained reduction in intraocular pressure was obtained when 30 such laser burns were made in an eye.
