BACKGROUND: Thyroid metastases to distant sites are uncommon incidents, most often metastasizing to the lungs and bones. Rates of metastasis to the kidney are particularly low, ranging from 2.8-3.8% for papillary and 6-20% for follicular variants of well-differentiated thyroid cancers (WDTCs). In rare instances, tumor-to-tumor metastasis between two true primary neoplasms can occurs. This medical phenomenon has previously occurred as a clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC) spreading to a WDTC. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a tumor-to-tumor metastasis of a thyroid cancer metas

Malignant mesothelioma predominantly arises from the serosal surfaces of the pleural or peritoneal cavity. There is currently no effective standard treatment for mesothelioma and the prognosis for patients is poor; the majority of patients with malignant mesothelioma succumb between 12 and 17 months following diagnosis. The association of all forms of malignant mesothelioma with asbestos exposure has been well documented. However, metastasis to the oral gingiva is rare, as only four cases have previously been reported; two cases of metastasis to the tongue and four cases to the jaw bone. In th

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a soft-tissue sarcoma originating from fibroblast cells, characterized by a high rate of metastasis or recurrence. With only 4 cases described in the available English literature up to now, gastric metastasis of MFH is extremely rare. Among them only one case has been reported to lead to gastrointestinal bleeding. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman who underwent total gastrectomy, 14 months after resection of an MFH from the right side of retroperitoneum. The neoplasm was detected at the time of diagnostic workup for upper gastrointestinal bleedin

The MRI appearance of intraventricular neoplasms is often nonspecific, however knowledge of patient age and tumor location facilitates the formulation of a differential diagnosis. Imaging and pertinent clinical features of the following intraventricular neoplasms are reviewed: ependymoma, subependymoma, central neurocytoma, subependymal giant cell tumor, choroid plexus tumors, medulloblastoma, meningioma, chordoid glioma, rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor, central nervous system lymphoma, and metastasis.

Spitzoid neoplasms constitute a morphologically distinct category of melanocytic tumors, encompassing Spitz nevus (benign), atypical Spitz tumor (intermediate malignant potential), and spitzoid melanoma (fully malignant). Currently, no reliable histopathological criteria or molecular marker is known to distinguish borderline from overtly malignant neoplasms. Because TERT promoter (TERT-p) mutations are common in inherently aggressive cutaneous conventional melanoma, we sought to evaluate their prognostic significance in spitzoid neoplasms. We analyzed tumors labeled as atypical Spitz tumor or

Solitary metastasis of malignant melanoma (MM) to the gallbladder (GB) is rare and generally originates from skin melanoma. MM is a neoplasm with an often unpredictable course and metastases can potentially affecting all organs. The occurrence of metastasis in the GB is unusual and has only been exceptionally reported in the literature. We describe a case of an 86-year-old man with an isolated MM metastasis located within the GB presenting with symptoms mimicking acute cholecystitis. Anamnestically, he presented a history of malignant melanoma (Clark level III) resected from his left leg 17 ye

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: A case of metastasis to the pituitary gland from a ductal adenocarcinoma of the salivary gland is presented. Metastasis to this site is rare, and a salivary gland source has never previously been described.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: This patient presented with hypopituitarism, including diabetes insipidus.
INTERVENTION: A craniotomy was performed to alleviate visual loss. The histological features of the sellar tumor were identical to those of a tumor removed from the parotid gland 18 months earlier.
CONCLUSION: Although intrasellar tumors originating from embryonic r

Carcinoid tumours are uncommon neuroendocrine neoplasms that may be found anywhere in the body but are most commonly seen in the gastro-intestinal and respiratory tracts. Metastasis to the skin occurs in a small proportion of these but primary cutaneous carcinoid tumours are exceedingly rare. There have been five previous cases of primary carcinoid tumours occurring in the skin. To our knowledge, this is the first report of metastasis from a primary cutaneous carcinoid tumour.

The clinical and pathologic features of a case of adrenal carcinosarcoma are reported. Although synchronous malignancy of the adrenal gland has been described, no case of an adrenal tumor combining both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements has been previously documented. This neoplasm is extremely aggressive with distant metastasis arising from the sarcomatous component, and rapid progression despite multimodal therapy.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common tumor of the kidney. Although RCC often metastasizes to other organs, metastasis to the head and neck region is rare, and metastasis to the mandible is very unusual. Given the fact that metastasis of primary neoplasms is not always predictable, it is essential to rule out metastatic carcinoma in jaw lesions. We herein report a rare presentation of metastasis of RCC to the mandible, in which the metastatic lesion in the oral cavity was found first, followed by the primary lesion, in a 22-year-old girl who suffered from pain in the left temporomandib

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous metastatic disease is uncommon and the outcome after cutaneous metastasis has rarely been thoroughly studied. The objective of this work was to study the survival after diagnosis of cutaneous metastasis in a large series of patients and to evaluate survival according to the type of cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted out in the Laboratoire d'Histo-pathologie Cutanée of Strasbourg. Between 1950 to 1996, 228 patients with cutaneous metastasis were diagnosed on the basis of typical histopathology, confirmed by two dermatopathologists. We exc

Certain malignant neoplasms commonly metastasize to the adrenal glands, whereas others do so only infrequently. In the latter circumstance, an adrenal mass is likely to be benign. We report 3 patients with malignant neoplasms (hepatoma, transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, and squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva) that do not commonly metastasize to the adrenals in whom computed tomographic (CT) demonstration and guided aspiration of adrenal masses significantly affected patient management. CT guided aspiration of adrenal masses is safe and accurate and is recommended whenever a diagnos

Bilateral primary synchronous ovarian neoplasms are rarely encountered in clinical practice. Both ovaries harboring neoplasms is predominantly appreciated as, metastasis from a distant primary or secondary from an advanced primary ovarian neoplasm. However in both the above instances, the histomorphological evaluation is of paramount importance. We encountered an incidental left ovarian, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics grade 2, endometrioid carcinoma in a patient presenting with a right ovarian mass immunohistopathologically proven to be clear cell carcinoma. INTRODUCTION: Secondary neoplasms in the thyroid are rare. The study aim was to provide an overview of non-thyroid tumours that metastasize to the thyroid through our institutional experience.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study entailed a review of the pathology database searching for patients with metastasis to the thyroid at the Karolinska University Hospital between 1992 and 2019 and review of their medical files.
RESULTS: Out of 1939 surgical procedures with a histopathological diagnosis of a thyroid malignancy, 31 cases (1.6%, 65% females) with a diagnosis of metastatic epithelial neopla

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis in the same bone is an extremely rare condition. Limited number of case reports exists for coincidence of benign and malign neoplasms but none for malignant to malignant metastasis. Occurrence of several individual malignancies in the same patient may eventually cause such coexistences. We report an Ollier's disease patient with malignant transformation to chondrosarcoma complicated by a pathologic fracture and eventually whose pathological examination revealed that the lesion was not only the chondrosarcoma but an accompanying metastasis from existing lung adenocarci

Olfactory neuroblastoma (Esthesioneuroblastoma) is a rare malignant tumour arising from olfactory epithelium. It has a predilection for cervical lymph node metastasis and also has potential for distant metastasis to unusual sites like scalp, face, aorta, spleen, liver, adrenal gland and ovary. We report here a rare case of olfactory neuroblastoma in an adolescent girl with metastatic deposits in the breast. A poor prognosis due to rapidly progressive disseminated disease was observed. The relevant literature regarding metastatic olfactory neuroblastoma and metastasis in the breast from non-mam

We describe a case of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis in a horseshoe kidney with vaginal tumor as the first manifestation of remote metastasis. While the occurrence of adenocarcinoma in a horseshoe kidney appears to be no higher than in nonfused kidneys, the incidence of transitional cell carcinoma among neoplasms in horseshoe kidneys is higher. Vaginal metastasis from transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis is considered extremely rare. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis in a horseshoe kidney with metast

Neoplasm of salivary gland constitutes about 3% of all tumours of head and neck. Within the category we can differentiate tumours of a very different histological structure. What lies behind such great differences in the changes within the salivary glands is complex embryogenesis of the glands. This work aims at the assessment of the frequency of occurrence of malignant neoplasm in parotid gland and submandibular gland based on the material collected at the ENT Department of the Medical University in Poznan in the years 1995-2006. In the 12-year period, 103 patients suffered from malignant neo

Pleuropulmonary blastoma is a rare and aggressive primary intrathoracic neoplasm of children. T'he prognosis is extremely poor with frequent metastasis to the brain and bone. A 4-year-old boy successfully treated with multimodal therapy despite unfavorable prognostic factors is presented. The authors support the use of aggressive treatment of pleuropulmonary blastoma with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.

Ameloblastoma is an aggressive locally recurring neoplasm of odontogenic epithelium. We describe a case of a mandibular ameloblastoma with a 17-year history of local recurrences followed by two metachronous intracranial metastases. Central nervous system metastasis without pulmonary involvement is previously unreported in a living patient with ameloblastoma. The behavior of this tumor qualifies it as a malignant ameloblastoma.
