Nineteen cases of a distinctive variant of paraganglioma characterized by extensive collagen deposition resulting in a pattern of growth that resembled an invasive malignant neoplasm are described. The patients were 3 men and 16 women, 32 to 69 years of age (mean, 50.5 years). The tumors were located in the carotid body region, parapharyngeal region, and mediastinum. Tumor size ranged from 2 to 6 cm in greatest diameter. Grossly, the tumors were described as rubbery to firm, tan-red, and with extensive areas of sclerosis. Histologic examination showed nests and cords of tumor cells separated b

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm that appears primarily in the pleura and rarely in intrapulmonary or endobronchial topography. The authors report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented obstructive respiratory symptoms for 4 years. The chest computed tomography and bronchoscopy showed an obstructive polypoid lesion located between the trachea and the left main bronchus associated with distal atelectasis of the left lung. A resection of the lesion was performed and, macroscopically, the mass was oval, encapsulated, and firm, measuring 2.3 × 1.7 × 1.5 cm. Histology r

BACKGROUND: Squamous odontogenic tumor (SOT) is a rare benign odontogenic epithelial neoplasm. A slow-growing painless expansive swelling is the common presenting symptom. Histopathologically, SOT can be easily misdiagnosed as an acanthomatous ameloblastoma. Although Notch receptors and ligands have been shown to play a role in cell fate decisions in ameloblastomas, the role of these cell signaling molecules in SOT is unknown.
CASE REPORT: This paper describes a case of SOT affecting the anterior mandible of a 10-year-old Indian female. The patient was treated by local surgical excision and t

The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes in 39 patients with malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) were reviewed retrospectively. Twenty-one sarcomas were in the lower extremity, five each in the upper extremity and trunk, two each in the neck and heart, and one each in the maxillary sinus, sella turcica, tongue, and spermatic cord. The examinations were performed with spin-echo sequences on a 1.5 Tesla Signa Scanner (GE, Milwaukee WI). Twenty-two tumors exhibited intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted images and 23 were of high signal intensity on T2-weighted images. There was no sig

Deep fibrous histiocytoma (DFH), also termed deep benign fibrous histiocytoma, is an uncommon fibroblastic neoplasm that typically arises in the dermis or subcutis. Occurrence in deep soft tissues is rare and retroperitoneal presentation is exceptional. Distinguishing DFH from soft tissue sarcomas can be challenging when lesions show atypical morphology or focal lipogenic change. We report a giant retroperitoneal DFH displaying low-grade myxoid and dedifferentiated liposarcoma-like area and summarize diagnostic pearls and management considerations. A 53-year-old man presented with postprandial

Mast cell tumor (MCT) has long been considered as an uncommon neoplasm in horses. Cytological and behavioral evidence of its malignancy is usually lacking, and only a few reports have described MCT displaying malignant behavior. An 18-year-old Friesian stallion presented with a one-year history of intermittent and progressive skin lesions on the left forelimb associated with intense, generalized pruritus and apathy temporarily responsive to glucocorticoids and antibiotics. The horse was alert and responsive with poor body condition and marked generalized pruritus. The left forelimb was markedl

Mammary-type myofibroblastoma (MTMF) is an unusual and rare benign tumor that typically presents in older men or post-menopausal females. A 53-year-old female presented with a 6-month history of an asymptomatic pink/white submucosal nodule involving the left lateral tongue. Clinical examination showed a 5 mm × 5 mm × 5 mm firm submucosal nodule with intact overlying mucosa. Differential diagnoses focused on benign nodular connective tissue tumors. An excisional biopsy was performed and submitted for histopathological examination. The patient underwent conservative local excision. Histopatholog

Background: Soft tissue tumors with fusions or amplifications of the GLI1 gene have distinctive molecular characteristics and have recently been considered a unique pathological entity, thus named "GLI1-altered soft tissue tumors." It is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that involves soft tissues at any site. Case presentation: We report an example of this condition in a 13-year-old Chinese male patient who presented with a mass in the tongue. The tumor was multilobulated; the tumor cells were arranged in nests and sheets, had a rich, delicate fibrovascular network, and were separated by a hyaliniz

Background and Clinical Significance: Brenner tumors are rare epithelial tumors that can occur in both males and females. They consist of ovarian transition cells surrounded by dense fibrous tissue and can be classified as benign, borderline, or malignant. While most commonly found in the ovary, extraovarian Brenner tumors (EOBTs) have been reported in the uterus, vagina, broad ligament, and omentum. Case Presentation: A 71-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with a polypous formation on the upper third of the posterior vaginal wall, which was found at a routine health check. Macroscopical

CONTEXT: - Pleural pathology has been dominated by discussions relating to the diagnosis, prognosis, etiology, and management of malignant mesothelioma. However, there exists a diverse group of other neoplasms that involve the pleura; the most common by far is metastatic carcinoma, usually of pulmonary origin. Other metastatic tumors of varied histogenesis do occur but are less common. Primary pleural neoplasms other than diffuse malignant mesothelioma are either uncommon or rare and have received less attention.
OBJECTIVE: - To provide a review of those diverse tumors that can involve the pl

Solitary fibrous tumor is a soft tissue neoplasm initially described in the pleura but subsequently reported in a wide variety of locations. The clinical behavior is usually benign, but the existence of aggressive cases has been documented both in the pleura and in extrapleural sites. In this report clinical and pathologic features of seven solitary fibrous tumors of the thyroid gland are presented. Patients' ages ranged from 43 to 64 years (mean 52 years), and tumor sizes varied from 2 to 6 cm. Grossly, the tumors were white-tan and well circumscribed. Microscopically, there was a variegated,

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs), an uncommon subtype of soft tissue sarcomas mesenchymal, are frequently diagnosed in the intra-thoracic region. Distant metastasis is detected in 10-40% of SFT patients with a predilection site to the lungs; nevertheless, these can occur rarely in the liver, brain, and bones. This entity was also reported in the abdomen, trunk, head, and neck, extremities but also, in the central nervous system (CNS). In the latter form of SFTs, the meninges were mostly affected while only a few cases were reported in the intraventricular and intraparenchymal region with distinc

Atypical fibroxanthomas are rare, superficial dermal tumors. Most cases are benign and only locally destructive with a low rate of metastasis. Lesions are most commonly found on sun-exposed sites of elderly light-skinned patients and present as asymptomatic nodules with irregular borders; ulcerations and friability are other key characteristics. Pedunculated lesions, however, are rarely described in the literature. We present two cases of atypical fibroxanthoma manifesting as exophytic, pedunculated lesions on the face: one in a 74-year-old man and the other in an 82-year-old woman. These tumo

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm that is benign in most cases. Although SFT was first recognized to arise only in the pleura, recent reports indicate that SFT can involve a wide range of anatomical sites. To date, 17 cases of pelvic SFT have been reported. Herein is reported a case of a 74-year-old woman with a giant malignant SFT in the pelvis. Along with massive invasion to adjacent organs and multiple lung metastases detected on radiography, biopsy from the tumor through the vaginal wall showed malignant looking spindle-cell neoplasm with increased cellularity, a

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a benign mensenchymal neoplasm of spindle-cell origin. The authors report the case of a 50-year-old man with SFT arising from the meninges of the left parasellar region with cavernous sinus involvement. The tumor was demonstrated isointense on T1-weighted and heterogeneously hypointense on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with strong contrast enhancement. The preoperative MRI diagnosis was meningioma or hemangiopericytoma. Pathological study revealed an SFT that stained positive immunohistochemically for CD34 and vimentin.

Sialolipoma is a rare benign neoplasm characterized by a well-circumscribed mass composed of neoplastic mature adipose tissue and non-neoplastic salivary gland elements. A 72-year-old woman presented with a painless swelling located in the hard palate, which had been identified 15 days earlier. Microscopically, the tumor was well-circumscribed consisting of lobular proliferation of the lipomatous tissue with thin fibrous tissue septa containing clustered salivary gland elements. Both the glandular and adipose components were found in almost equal proportion. No atypia in the adipose tissue was

BACKGROUND: This report describes a case of uterine leiomyoma and cystic endometrial hyperplasia in an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 74-year-old female elephant in captivity was necropsied. At necropsy, the uterus was markedly enlarged, and a firm, white nodule measuring 10 × 10 × 8 cm protruded from the uterine wall into the lumen of the right uterine segment. Additionally, multiple cystic dilations (0.5-4 cm in diameter) were observed throughout the uterine segment. The mucosa was diffusely red with a moderate amount of crumbly clots in the lumen. Histologically, a b

Oncogenic osteomalacia, which is characterized by renal phosphate wasting, low serum 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D, and osteomalacia, is caused by mesenchymal neoplasms that are termed phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs). As PMTs are usually small and lack specific histological features, the pathological identification of PMTs is difficult. Dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) is an acidic phosphoprotein expressed in mineralized tissues including bone, tooth, and hypertrophic cartilage. Increased expression of DMP1 gene in PMTs has been reported by using differential cDNA screening. In the present stu

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura with malignant progression occurs uncommonly. Cardiac intracavitary extension of tumors is rarely seen, with left side location being exceptional.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The authors report the first case of a malignant SFT metastatic to the heart occurring in a 74-year-old woman. The tumor first presented as a slow-growing pleural SFT that in 6 years reached a size of 16 cm. Two months after a complete surgical resection, the tumor was found to spread to the left atrium by intracavitary extension from the left upper pulmonary vein, simulati
