Clear Cell Neoplasms of Salivary Glands: A Diagnostic Challenge.

This review focuses on the heterogenous group of clear cell neoplasms of salivary glands and attempts to identify major differential diagnostic features. Within the head and neck region, clear cells are found most commonly in salivary gland tumors, but may also be seen in tumors of squamous or odontogenic epithelial origin, primary or metastatic carcinomas, benign or malignant melanocytic lesions, or benign or malignant mesenchymal tumors. Clear cells occur fairly commonly among a wide variety of salivary gland neoplasms, but mostly they constitute only a minor component of the tumor cell popu

Tumor angiogenic factor and human skin tumors.

A transparent acrylic hamster cheek-pouch chamber was used to investigate the elaboration of a tumor angiogenic factor (TAF) by human cutaneous neoplasms; direct tumor implantations, transfilter diffusion, and soluble tumor extracts were used in the study. A diffusible and filterable TAF was extracted from cutaneous tumors and produced distinctive patterns of sequential vasodilatation, tortuosity, and neovascular proliferation in the cheek-pouch membrane. Malignant human neoplasms (eg, melanoma, basal cell epithelioma, squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoma) produced striking neovascularization; va

Spontaneously resolved invasive conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma with anterior chamber invasion in low-grade lymphoma patient.

PURPOSE: To report a case of invasive conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with anterior chamber invasion that resolved spontaneously after incisional biopsy and anterior chamber paracentesis in the absence of any treatment. OBSERVATIONS: A 76-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of a recurrent mass in the right eye. Examination showed an elevated, smooth amorphous lesion at the nasal conjunctivae, adherent to the scleral surface. There was also a pseudohypopyon at the angle adjacent to the lesion. Incisional biopsy of the right conjunctival lesion and intracameral fine-needle

Incidence of invasive cancers following squamous cell skin cancer.

The authors describe the incidence of new primary cancers among 4,639 cases of squamous cell skin cancer (SCC) diagnosed between 1974 and 1994 in the cancer registries of the Swiss cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel (total person-years at risk = 23,152). Overall, 729 metachronous cancers were observed versus 527.6 expected, corresponding to a standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of 1.4 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.3-1.5). After exclusion of skin cancers, however, 384 second primary neoplasms were observed versus 397.2 expected (SIR = 1.0). Excesses were observed for cancers of the lip (SIR = 3.1)

A Report of a Keratoacanthoma-Type Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma Arising Within a Multicolored Ink Tattoo.

Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a common, low-grade, rapidly growing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma that presents as an enlarging crateriform nodule, which may spontaneously involute but rarely metastasizes. Immunosuppression, ultraviolet light, viral infection, surgical procedures, and trauma are associated with their development. Overall, tattoo-induced squamous cell neoplasms are infrequently described in the literature. Carcinogenesis is hypothesized to result from trauma caused by the tattooing procedure or a foreign body reaction to the pigment. However, the pathogenesis has not been clearly

Gastric squamous cell carcinoma in three horses.

Gastric squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed in three horses. Clinical signs observed in all cases were weight loss, anorexia and lethargy. Respiratory signs were prominent in one case. All three horses had depressed albumin and elevated globulin and fibrinogen concentrations. Two horses were mildly anaemic. Inflammatory exudates were present in peritoneal cavities in all cases, and cytological evaluation provided a positive diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma in two cases. Pleural fluid samples taken from two cases were also classified as inflammatory exudates, but no neoplastic cells were

Metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma to the pleura: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common malignant neoplasm arising from the salivary glands (Ali et al. in J Ayub Med Coll Abbottabad 20(2): 141-2, 2008, Xi et al. in World J Surg Oncol 10: 232, 2012). When arising from anatomic sites other than the salivary glands it can be a diagnostic challenge. Primary and metastatic mucoepidermoid carcinoma from and to the pleura are extremely rare entities that are frequently misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous carcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma (Xi et al. in World J Surg Oncol 10: 232, 2012). CASE PRESENTATION: We describe

Poorly differentiated sinonasal tract malignancies: A review focusing on recently described entities.

Sinonasal tract malignancies are uncommon, representing no more than 5% of all head and neck neoplasms. However, in contrast to other head and neck sites, a significant proportion of sinonasal neoplasms tend to display a poorly/ undifferentiated significantly overlapping morphology and a highly aggressive clinical course, despite being of diverse histogenetic and molecular pathogenesis. The wide spectrum of poorly differentiated sinonasal epithelial neoplasms with small "basaloid" blue cell morphology includes basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (both HPV+ and HPV-unrelated), nasopharyngeal-type

Aminopeptidase A expression in cervical neoplasia and its relationship to neoplastic transformation and progression.

Aminopeptidase A (AP-A) is a cell surface metallopeptidase which specifically cleaves the amino-terminal acidic residue from peptide substrates such as angiotensin II. AP-A is identical to the differentiation-related antigen, murine BP-1 or human kidney gp160, and is involved in regulating cell differentiation and/or neoplastic transformation of certain normal and transformed cells. We examined expression of AP-A in premalignant and malignant lesions of the uterine cervix, and investigated whether its expression was related to disease progression and neoplastic transformation. Formalin-fixed,

Overexpression of phosphorylated nuclear factor-kappa B in tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma and high-grade dysplasia is associated with poor prognosis.

Intracellular signals along the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-Akt-nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB) pathway have been associated with carcinogenesis in various malignant neoplasms. This investigation was to evaluate the expression of EGFR, phosphorylated(p)-Akt and p-NF-kappaB and correlate them with clinical outcomes in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. A total of 45 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil were studied by immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression levels of EGFR, p-Akt and p-NF-kappaB. Results for squamous cell carcinoma of the t

Perineural involvement of squamous cell carcinoma presenting with formication.

Perineural involvement of a cutaneous neoplasm marks an aggressive feature. Tumors with perineural involvement share an increased propensity for local invasion via perineural spread. Formication may be an indicator of perineural involvement by cutaneous neoplasms. We present a case of an 82-year-old man with perineural involvement of a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) identified by clinical symptoms of formication. Successful resolution of these symptoms was achieved with radiation therapy.

Warty Carcinoma Penis: An Uncommon Variant.

Penile carcinoma frequency varies widely in different parts of the world and comprises 1-10% of all the malignancies in males. Majority of the cases of penile carcinoma are squamous cell carcinoma of penis comprising 60% to 70% of all cases. Warty carcinoma of penis is an unusual neoplasm and a variant of penile squamous cell carcinoma comprising 5%-10% of all the variants. The other histological variants include basaloid, verrucous, papillary, sarcomatous, mixed, and adenosquamous carcinoma. The various histological entities with an exophytic papillary lesions including warty carcinoma are to

Oral squamous cell carcinoma in a 10 year old boy.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity a type of Oral Cancer in young patients is a very rare occurrence particularly during the first decade of life. Oral cancer is predominantly an aggressive neoplasm of middle-aged people where 96% of the patients are more than 40 years of age and it occurs mainly due to the excessive consumption of tobacco and alcohol. In South-East Asia it has a higher rate of occurrence than the rest of the world, partly due to increased consumption of chewing tobacco and various harmful spices, areca nuts and betel quids. These rare varieties of aggressive neoplasm

Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Nasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in a Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pig.

BACKGROUND: Though neoplasms in pigs are increasingly recognized, there are no previous clinical descriptions of nasal squamous cell carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old 71 kg Vietnamese Pot-bellied pig barrow presented with a history of mild intermittent epistaxis. A mass was identified in the left nasal passage during computed tomography. Rhinoscopic guidance biopsy confirmed squamous cell carcinoma. Surgical excision via dorsal rhinotomy was performed. Nasal swelling prompted repeated computed tomography 1 year later. Mass recurrence was detected, and the pig underwent a second surgi

Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma Harbouring a Novel PAX8::PPARγ Fusion and a FGFR2 Exon 7 Missense Mutation.

Comprehensive molecular profiling is now routinely performed in newly diagnosed non-small cell lung carcinomas (NSCLCs) to identify actionable genomic alterations. Although numerous molecular abnormalities have been described in lung carcinomas, rare and unexpected gene fusions may create significant diagnostic challenges, particularly when they are characteristically associated with tumours of different lineages. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a primary lung squamous cell carcinoma harbouring an in-frame PAX8::PPARγ fusion with a concurrent FGFR2 exon 7 missense mutation
