OBJECTIVES: Humans born preterm have low nephron endowment and an increased risk for hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD) later in life. The risks of these sequelae are augmented by a higher incidence of postnatal kidney injury from ischemic, hypoxic and/or nephrotoxic insults.

A 31-year-old man was referred to an adult urologist for a renal polar mass that measured 7.2 cm in maximum diameter. AIM: We sought to assess the magnitude of functional decline and the natural history of the operated kidney residual function after zero-ischemia nephron-sparing surgery (Z-NSS) in children with unilateral renal tumor (URT).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 50 children were treated for URT at our surgical unit between 1992 and 2016. Of these 12 who underwent Z-NSS were available for the current analysis. BACKGROUND: TachoSil, which is an absorbable collagen sponge coated with human fibrinogen and thrombin, has proven to enhance hemostasis and promote optimal wound healing in adults undergoing nephron sparing surgery (NSS). We report our preliminary experience using this hemostatic agent during NSS in children.
