Automatic Speech Recognition from Neural Signals: A Focused Review.

Speech interfaces have become widely accepted and are nowadays integrated in various real-life applications and devices. They have become a part of our daily life. However, speech interfaces presume the ability to produce intelligible speech, which might be impossible due to either loud environments, bothering bystanders or incapabilities to produce speech (i.e., patients suffering from locked-in syndrome). For these reasons it would be highly desirable to not speak but to simply envision oneself to say words or sentences. Interfaces based on imagined speech would enable fast and natural commu

In vitro evaluation of inorganic and methyl mercury mediated cytotoxic effect on neural cells derived from different animal species.

To extend the current understanding of the mercury-mediated cytotoxic effect, five neural cell lines established from different animal species were comparatively analyzed using three different endpoint bioassays: thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay (MTT), neutral red uptake assay (NRU), and Coomassie blue assay (CB). Following a 24-hr exposure to selected concentrations of mercury chloride (HgCl2) and methylmercury (II) chloride (MeHgCl), the cytotoxic effect on test cells was characterized by comparing their 50% inhibition co

Cardiac Heterogeneity Prediction by Cardio-Neural Network Simulation.

The bidirectional interactions between brain and heart through autonomic nervous system is the prime focus of neuro-cardiology community. The computer models designed to analyze brain and heart signals are either complex in terms of molecular and cellular interactions or not capable of representing the complex ion channel dynamics. Therefore, scientists are unable to extract the overall behavior of organs by electrical response of heterogeneous cells of brain and heart. In this study, a unified model of excitable cells is proposed that can be modulated by adrenergic features. By implementing t

Neural network model for prediction of possible sarcopenic obesity using Korean national fitness award data (2010-2023).

Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterized by concomitant sarcopenia and obesity and presents a high risk of disability, morbidity, and mortality among older adults. However, predictions based on sequential neural network SO studies and the relationship between physical fitness factors and SO are lacking. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for SO in older adults by focusing on physical fitness factors. A comprehensive dataset of older Korean adults participating in national fitness programs was analyzed using sequential neural networks. Appendicular skeletal muscle/body weight was de

Is There a Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Discernible Cause for Trigeminal Neuralgia? A Structured Review.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a chronic brain condition involving the trigeminal nerve and characterized by severe and recurrent facial pain. Although the cause of TN has been researched extensively, there is a lack of convergence on the physiologic processes leading to pain symptoms. This review seeks to better elucidate the underlying pathophysiology of TN by analyzing the outcomes of studies that use magnetic resonance structural imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging to examine nerve damage in patients with TN. METHODS: Performing a structured review of the literature, the auth

Brain-inspired navigation based on the entorhinal cortex- hippocampal neural circuit: Bridging spatial cognitive mechanisms and robotic applications.

The spatial cognitive neural circuit comprising the mammalian hippocampal (HPC) and entorhinal cortex (EC) constitutes the neurobiological foundation that enables organisms to achieve autonomous navigation in complex environments. Brain-inspired navigation technology, as an innovative paradigm for addressing the challenge of autonomous robot localization in complex environments, substantially improves the adaptability of navigation systems in unstructured and dynamic environments through the emulation of mammalian spatial cognitive neural mechanisms. To address the limitations in adaptability

[Neuromodulation in bone homeostasis and injury repair].

Bone homeostasis essentially represents a balanced interplay among bone cells, dynamically maintaining bone mass and structural stability under the influence of both internal and external factors of the body. Bone tissue receives various types of neural innervation and, through the secretion of signaling factors, influences the function of bone cells, collectively forming the core framework of the "neuro-skeletal axis". This review systematically analyzes the roles of multiple neural regulatory mechanisms in the maintenance of bone homeostasis and the repair of bone injuries, as well as their

Neural bases of risky decisions involving nicotine vapor versus monetary reward.

Substantial effort has gone into neuroimaging studies of neural mechanisms underlying addiction. Human studies of smoking typically either give monetary reward during an fMRI task or else allow subjects to smoke outside the scanner, after the session. This raises a fundamental issue of construct validity, as it is unclear whether the same neural mechanisms process decisions about nicotine that process decisions about money. To address this, we developed a novel MR-compatible nicotine vaping device, such that access to nicotine vapor could be controlled and monitored. We recruited heavy smokers

Medium-throughput zebrafish optogenetic platform identifies deficits in subsequent neural activity following brief early exposure to cannabidiol and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol.

In light of legislative changes and the widespread use of cannabis as a recreational and medicinal drug, delayed effects of cannabis upon brief exposure during embryonic development are of high interest as early pregnancies often go undetected. Here, zebrafish embryos were exposed to cannabidiol (CBD) and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) until the end of gastrulation (1-10 h post-fertilization) and analyzed later in development (4-5 days post-fertilization). In order to measure neural activity, we implemented Calcium-Modulated Photoactivatable Ratiometric Integrator (CaMPARI) and optimized the pr

Deep learning applied to polysomnography to predict blood pressure in obstructive sleep apnea and obesity hypoventilation: a proof-of-concept study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Nocturnal blood pressure (BP) profile shows characteristic abnormalities in OSA, namely acute postapnea BP surges and nondipping BP. These abnormal BP profiles provide prognostic clues indicating increased cardiovascular disease risk. We developed a deep neural network model to perform computerized analysis of polysomnography data and predict nocturnal BP profile. METHODS: We analyzed concurrently performed polysomnography and noninvasive beat-to-beat BP measurement with a deep neural network model to predict nocturnal BP profiles from polysomnography data in 13 patients wit

Increased neuronal death and disturbed axonal growth in the Polμ-deficient mouse embryonic retina.

Programmed cell death occurs naturally at different stages of neural development, including neurogenesis. The functional role of this early phase of neural cell death, which affects recently differentiated neurons among other cell types, remains undefined. Some mouse models defective in DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair present massive cell death during neural development, occasionally provoking embryonic lethality, while other organs and tissues remain unaffected. This suggests that DSBs occur frequently and selectively in the developing nervous system. We analyzed the embryonic retina of

Quantitative analysis of cell migration using optical flow.

Neural crest cells exhibit dramatic migration behaviors as they populate their distant targets. Using a line of zebrafish expressing green fluorescent protein (sox10:EGFP) in neural crest cells we developed an assay to analyze and quantify cell migration as a population, and use it here to characterize in detail the subtle defects in cell migration caused by ethanol exposure during early development. The challenge was to quantify changes in the in vivo migration of all Sox10:EGFP expressing cells in the visual field of time-lapse movies. To perform this analysis we used an Optical Flow algorit

Interface dynamics in planar neural field models.

Neural field models describe the coarse-grained activity of populations of interacting neurons. Because of the laminar structure of real cortical tissue they are often studied in two spatial dimensions, where they are well known to generate rich patterns of spatiotemporal activity. Such patterns have been interpreted in a variety of contexts ranging from the understanding of visual hallucinations to the generation of electroencephalographic signals. Typical patterns include localized solutions in the form of traveling spots, as well as intricate labyrinthine structures. These patterns are natu

Effect of the artificial somato-autonomic neuroanastomosis on defecation after spinal cord injury and its underlying mechanisms.

A new artificial somatic-autonomic neuroanastomosis has been established in male rats with spinal cord injury (SCI). Anorectal manometry and neural retrograde tracing were conducted in this animal model to analyze the mechanisms and the effects on recovery of anorectal function. The left L4 ventral root (L4VR) was intradurally micro-anastomosed to the L6 ventral root (L6VR) to establish the new regenerated neural pathway. Three months later the spinal cord was completely transected at the T9-10 level. Eight weeks later the model rats were randomly divided into two groups. The rats in the group

Neural Electrical Correlates of Subjective Happiness.

Happiness is a subjective experience that can serve as the ultimate goal for humans. A recent study that employed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) reported that spontaneous fluctuation (fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation: fALFF) in the precuneus is negatively associated with subjective happiness. However, little is known about the neural electrical correlates of subjective happiness, which can provide direct evidence of neural activity and insights regarding the underlying psychological, cellular, and neurotransmitter mechanisms. Therefore, we measured
