Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a globally recognized neurodevelopmental condition characterized by repetitive and restrictive behavior, persistent deficits in social interaction and communication, mental disturbances, etc., affecting approximately 1 in 100 children worldwide. A combination of genetic and environmental factors is involved in the etiopathogenesis of the disease, but specific biomarkers have not yet been identified. Due to the lack of clinical evidence, fluctuations in symptoms, and difficulties in in-vitro and in-vivo modeling, developing medications for ASD is quite difficul

The spatial arrangement of retinal neurons determines to a certain extent visual acuity and sensitivity. Despite a large number of studies dealing with retinal topography, there are gaps in our knowledge on the issue. We addressed the spatial arrangement of retinal ganglion cells in the masked greenling, a marine demersal fish. The combined proportion of displaced amacrine cells and glia was 17.63%. The spatial density of ganglion cells was lowest (1900-2500 cells/mm2) in the ventronasal periphery. It increased centripetally to form a horizontal visual streak situated dorsal to the optic disc.

Inherited white matter disorders (IWMDs) are a phenotypically and genotypically heterogeneous group of disorders affecting the central nervous system (CNS) with or without peripheral neuropathy. They are classified either as leukodystrophies (LDs), with primary glial abnormalities, or genetic leukoencephalopathies (gLEs), where other CNS cells are involved. As a group, these disorders are common, with an incidence of 1 in 7500 births. However, IWMDs often go undiagnosed or suffer delayed or misdiagnosis due to their heterogeneous presentation. Many of these disorders present with lethal second

Glial cells are essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, categorized into two groups: macroglial and microglia. Traditionally viewed as passive entities involved in nutrition, support, and insulation, recent insights reveal their crucial role in brain function and plasticity. They serve as key regulators of synaptic activity, influencing information transmission between neurons and impacting processes like learning. Glial cells are vital for maintaining neuronal network integrity and functionality; disruptions in their function can lead to neuronal dysfunction and death. Our

The recent emergence of reprogramming technologies to convert brain cell types or epigenetically alter neurons and neural progenitors in vivo and in situ hold significant promises in brain repair and neuronal aging reversal. However, given the significant epigenetic and transcriptomic changes to components of the existing neuronal cells and network, we question if these reprogramming technology might inadvertently alter or erase memory engrams, conceivably resulting in changes in narrative identity or personality. We suggest that the nature of these alterations might be less predictable compar

Human studies, in combination with animal and cellular models, support glial cells as both major contributors to neurodegenerative diseases and promising therapeutic targets. Among glial cells, oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells are the myelinating glial cells of the central and peripheral nervous system, respectively. In this review, we discuss the contributions of these central and peripheral myelinating glia to the pathomechanisms of polyglutamine (polyQ) spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) types 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 17. First, we highlight the function of oligodendrocytes in healthy conditions and

Early life adversity (ELA)- which includes physical, psychological, emotional, and sexual abuse is one of the most common predictors to diverse psychopathologies later in adulthood. As ELA has a lasting impact on the brain at a developmental stage, recent findings from the field highlighted the specific contributions of different cell types to ELA and their association with long lasting consequences. In this review we will gather recent findings describing morphological, transcriptional and epigenetic alterations within neurons, glia and perineuronal nets and their associated cellular subpopul

Enteric glial cells in the enteric nervous system are critical for the regulation of gastrointestinal homeostasis. Increasing evidence suggests two-way communication between enteric glial cells and both enteric neurons and immune cells. These interactions may be important in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease (CD), a chronic relapsing disease characterized by a dysregulated immune response. Structural abnormalities in glial cells have been identified in CD. Furthermore, classical inflammatory pathways associated with CD (e.g., the nuclear factor kappa-B pathway) function in enteric glial cell

Echinoderms are a phylum of marine deterostomes with a range of interesting biological features. One remarkable ability is their impressive capacity to regenerate most of their adult tissues, including the central nervous system (CNS). The research community has accumulated data that demonstrates that, in spite of the pentaradial adult body plan, echinoderms share deep similarities with their bilateral sister taxa such as hemichordates and chordates. Some of the new data reveal the complexity of the nervous system in echinoderms. In terms of the cellular architecture, one of the traits that is

Oligodendrocytes (OLGs), highly specialized glial cells that wrap axons with myelin sheaths, are critical for brain development and function. There is new recognition of the role of OLGs in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), including Huntington's disease (HD), a prototypic NDD caused by a polyglutamine tract expansion in huntingtin (HTT), which results in gain- and loss-of-function effects. Clinically, HD is characterized by a constellation of motor, cognitive, and psychiatric disturbances. White matter (WM) structures, representing myelin-rich regions of the brain, are pr

In vitro models of traumatic brain injury (TBI) help to elucidate the pathological mechanisms responsible for cell dysfunction and death. To simulate in vitro the mechanical brain trauma, primary neuroglial cultures were scratched during different periods of network formation. Fluorescence microscopy was used to measure changes in intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) and mitochondrial potential (ΔΨm) a few minutes later and on days 3 and 7 after scratching. An increase in [Ca2+]i and a decrease in ΔΨm were observed ~10 s after the injury in cells located no further than 150-200 µm f…

Mercury is widely used in industrial and extractive processes, and the improper disposal of waste or products containing this metal produces a significant impact on ecosystems, causing adverse effects on living organisms, including humans. Exposure to methylmercury, a highly toxic organic compound, causes important neurological and developmental impairments. Recently, the genotoxicity of mercurial compounds has gained prominence as one of the possible mechanisms associated with the neurological effects of mercury, mostly by disturbing the mitotic spindle and causing chromosome loss. In this se

Pericytes and glial cells are known to collaborate in dental pulp tissue repair. Cell-based therapies that stimulate these stromal components may be of therapeutic relevance for partially vital dental pulp conditions. This study aimed to examine the early effect of photobiomodulation (PBM) in pericytes from experimentally injured pulp tissue. To accomplish this, we used the Nestin-GFP/NG2-DsRed mice, which could allow the identification of distinct pericyte phenotypes. We discovered the presence of two pericytes subsets within the dental pulp, the Nestin + NG2+ (type-2) and Nestin- NG2+ (type-

The central nervous system (CNS) is a constitutive structure of various cell types conserved by anatomical barriers. Many of the major CNS cell-type populations distributed across the different brain regions are targets for several neurotropic viruses. Numerous studies have demonstrated that viral susceptibility within the CNS is not absolute and initiates a cell-type specific antiviral defence response. Neurons, astrocytes, and microglial cells are among the major resident cell populations within the CNS and are all equipped to sense viral infection and induce a relative antiviral response mo

Neuroinflammation is involved in the aetiology of many neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and motor neuron disease. Whether neuroinflammation also plays an important role in the pathophysiology of frontotemporal dementia is less well known. Frontotemporal dementia is a heterogeneous classification that covers many subtypes, with the main pathology known as frontotemporal lobar degeneration. The disease can be categorized with respect to the identity of the protein that causes the frontotemporal lobar degeneration in the brain. The most common subgrou

Intestinal barrier injuries are common in uremia, which aggravates uremia. The goal of this study is to learn moreabout how electroacupuncture regulates gastrointestinal function, as well as to identify the importance of microglia in electroacupuncture regulation and the cannabinoid receptor signaling pathway in controlling the activity of intestinal glial cells. The mice were arbitrarily assigned to four groups: control, CKD, electroacupuncture stimulation, or AM251 (CB1 receptor antagonist). The mice model of uremia was established by adenine gavage. Western blotting revealed the development
