Crustacean hyperglycemic hormones (CHHs) are neuropeptides involved in the regulation of hemolymph glucose. The primary source of CHHs has been identified as the neurosecretory neurons of the eyestalk X-organ and its associated neurohemal organ, the sinus gland. We have identified another source of CHH-like peptides in the nervous system. With the use of immunocytochemistry, cells in the second roots of the thoracic ganglia have been observed to stain positively for CHH-reactive material. We also identified a pair of cells in the subesophageal ganglion that contain large amounts of CHH-reactiv

Magnocellular hypothalamic neurosecretory neurons secreting vasopressin or oxytocin provide a robust model system for the investigation and understanding of many aspects of peptidergic neuronal function. Many of their functions and the cellular organelles involved are well understood. However, recent ultrastructural studies have thrown new light on various aspects of magnocellular neurosecretory function which have not previously received much attention. This review concerns two of these: the effects of mutations in the vasopressin gene on the handling of the translated peptide by the rough en

Microplastics (MPs), widely found in aquatic environments, pose a growing threat to environmental and biological health due to their complex interactions with pollutants and microorganisms. This study investigates the adsorption characteristics of clothianidin (CLO) on polystyrene (PS) and photoaged polystyrene (P-PS) and explores the neurotoxic effects of CLO combined with PS/P-PS in larval zebrafish (Danio rerio). Adsorption kinetics and isotherms showed that P-PS exhibited a higher adsorption capacity and faster equilibrium compared to PS, indicating the significant role of photoaging in en

Proteotoxicity induced by misfolded or aggregated proteins causes progressive neuronal damage. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) protein quality control (ERQC) pathways are responsible for mitigating the accumulation of these misfolded or aggregated proteins, thus reducing proteotoxicity. Enhancing ERQC pathways is a promising strategy for treating neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanisms governing the initiation and degradation of misfolded or aggregated proteins in neurons remain largely unknown in vivo. In studying the maturation of proAVP in mouse AVP neurons, this study discovers

IN BRIEF: Early clinical manifestations of PCOS may begin during puberty. This paper reviews the initial characteristics of PCOS in the adolescent girl.
ABSTRACT: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous multi-factorial familial disorder characterized by androgen excess, irregular menses, and chronic anovulation. The key features, hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinemia, can be identified in peripubertal girls. From a pediatric/adolescent point of view, the ability to identify girls with PCOS or those 'at-risk for PCOS' is crucial to target educational and medica

As our understanding of respiratory control evolves, we appreciate how the basic neurobiological principles of plasticity discovered in other systems shape the development and function of the respiratory control system. While breathing is a robust homeostatic function, there is growing evidence that stress disrupts respiratory control in ways that predispose to disease. Neonatal stress (in the form of maternal separation) affects "classical" respiratory control structures such as the peripheral O2 sensors (carotid bodies) and the medulla (e.g., nucleus of the solitary tract). Furthermore, earl

Neuroendocrine tuberoinfundibular dopamine (TIDA) neurons tonically inhibit pituitary release of the hormone, prolactin. Through the powerful actions of prolactin in promoting lactation and maternal behaviour while suppressing sexual drive and fertility, TIDA neurons play a key role in reproduction. We summarize insights from recent in vitro studies into the membrane properties and network behaviour of TIDA neurons including the observations that TIDA neurons exhibit a robust oscillation that is synchronized between cells and depends on intact gap junction communication. Comparisons are made w

As compared to other groups of aquatic gastropods, documented examples of endocrine disruption in pulmonates are rather limited. This is quite surprising because the endocrine control of physiological functions has been extensively studied in these animals. In the model-species Lymnaea stagnalis, the neurohormonal regulation of reproduction has been thoroughly investigated, and the primary structure of several peptides and receptors involved in endocrine processes has been established. However, the use of this knowledge has been fairly limited in the context of ecotoxicology, to investigate th

During stress, activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathoadrenal system leads to increased secretion of glucocorticoids and catecholamines, respectively, in order to maintain homeostasis. Recent evidence suggests that stress hormones, acting on antigen-presenting immune cells, may influence the differentiation of bipotential T helper (Th) cells away from Th1 and toward a Th2 phenotype. This results in suppression of cellular immunity and potentiation of humoral immunity. Thyroid autoimmunity is clinically expressed as Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and its variants (s

While many studies have shown a connection between stress and autoimmune disease, most of the evidence for stress contributing to the onset and course of autoimmune disease is circumstantial and the mechanisms by which stress affects autoimmune disease are not fully understood. The best circumstantial evidence for an effect of stress on autoimmune thyroid disease is the well-known relationship between the onset of Graves' hyperthyroidism and major stress but even this is debated. However, most of the recent case-control studies have supported stress as a factor that affects the onset and clini

Ghrelin is a 28-amino-acid peptide predominantly produced by the stomach, while substantially lower amounts derive from other tissues including the pancreas. It is a natural ligand of the GH secretagogue (GHS) receptor (GHS-R1a) and strongly stimulates GH secretion, but acylation in serine 3 is needed for its activity. Ghrelin also possesses other endocrine and nonendocrine actions reflecting central and peripheral GHS-R distribution including the pancreas. The wide spectrum of ghrelin activities includes orexigenic effect, control of energy expenditure, and peripheral gastroenteropancreatic a

A progressive decline in fecundity with advancing age is a reality, attributed primarily to the detrimental impact of various aging processes on female gametes. Despite medical advances that have dramatically prolonged the female life span, declining numbers and deteriorating quality of oocytes, and an increasing incidence of meiotic errors and aneuploidy of gametes and embryos, reduce clinical pregnancy rates and escalate pregnancy wastage. Increased fetal aneuploidies in ongoing pregnancies and an increased predisposition to obstetric morbidities further contribute to the diminishing reprodu

Photoperiodism is a process whereby organisms are able to use both absolute measures of day length and the direction of day length change as a basis for regulating seasonal changes in physiology and behavior. The use of day length cues allows organisms to essentially track time-of-year and to "anticipate" relatively predictable annual variations in important environmental parameters. Thus, adaptive types of seasonal biological changes can be molded through evolution to fit annual environmental cycles. Studies of the formal properties of photoperiodic mechanisms have revealed that most organism

Expression of c-Fos, or other immediate early gene products, by individual neurons can be used as a marker of cell activation, making staining of these proteins an extremely useful technique for functional anatomical mapping of neuroendocrine systems. Because these proteins are located in the nucleus, identification of the phenotype of the activated neuron using substances located within the cytoplasm can be accomplished with standard double-labeling immunocytochemical techniques. Although it is clear that neurons have the capacity to express a number of immediate early gene products, what rem

The pineal complex of larval Geotria australis lampreys has been examined by light- and electron-microscopy. The complex consists of a pineal organ and a smaller parapineal organ, the former being situated dorsal to the latter. It is concluded that the pineal organ is a functioning photoreceptor, with neural and endocrine output. The parapineal appears to be a more basic neuroendocrine organ without photosensory capability. Day-night comparisons of the pineal complex show no obvious differences in ultrastructure; this could be related to the chronobiological role of the complex as a constant m

Onto- and phylogenetical studies of the evolution of cells, producing regulatory peptides, belonging to the "hormone families" of insulin, somatostatin, glucagon, and PP (the pancreatic polypeptide), have shown that the islets of Langerhans in vertebrates form a substantial part of the large neuroendocrine system (NES). The NES consists of three major parts, viz. (i) neuronal cells of the central and peripheral nervous systems, (ii) disseminated cells in the mucosa of the alimentary tract (and that of other hollow organs), (iii) the parenchymal cells of the classical endocrine glands. In the N

The paired, electrotonically coupled neurosecretory Canopy Cells (CC) of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis were microiontophoretically injected with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Whole mount preparations and ultrathin sections of injected CC were studied to describe in detail the morphology of the CC, their axon tracts and neurohaemal areas. The CC release their secretory product at three different sites, viz. from the soma and from axon terminals in the intercerebral commissure and in the median lip nerve. Neural control over the CC occurs by few synapses found exclusively on the CC axon, not
