In order to characterize the respiratory responses to this gas, 10 asthmatics (mean age +/- SD = 30 +/- 8 yrs) were exposed to air and 0.5 ppm NO2 gas for 1 h in a 30-m3 environmental chamber on different days in a double-blind randomized fashion. Pregnant albino rats were exposed to nitrogen dioxide in concentrations of 0.05, 0.10, 1 and 10 mg/m3 for 6 hr each day throughout gestation. Eleven patients with severe alopecia areata (localized and totalis types) were treated with topically applied nitrogen mustard. Nine patients had terminal hair regrowth; in 7 of the 11 patients, it was cosmetically acceptable. Hair regrowth began approximately 1-2 months after the initiation of therapy. The dual-flame thermionic detector for microcolumn liquid chromatography has been improved and optimized for nitrogen sensitivity. The total column effluent is concentrically nebulized and aspirated directly into an air-hydrogen diffusion flame, while detection limits of 1.4 X 10(-11) g nitrogen/sec at the maximum of a Gaussian peak are achieved. Detection linearity spans three orders of magnitude. An example of the analysis of underivatized barbiturate standards is provided.

Nitrogen is an inert gas that is a normal constituent of the air that we breathe. It is a suffocating gas that does not support life and that can be a cause of death by the displacement of oxygen in the atmosphere. The majority of deaths associated with nitrogen have occurred in the setting of scuba diving. Although other suffocating gases have been used as a means of committing suicide, the literature contains little information about the use of nitrogen as a suicidal agent. A case of a 50-year-old man who committed suicide using a homemade suicide device and nitrogen gas is presented.
