Role of Protopine and Nuciferine in the Management of Nocturia, Urgency, and Dysuria in Pre- and Postmenopausal Women: A Prospective Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVES: Nocturia was commonly treated with drugs burdened with high costs and numerous side effects; in fact, more than 70% of patients drop out of long-term treatment. Protopine and nuciferine are two alkaloids that have different effects on the neurotransmitter receptors involved in the regulation mechanism of the onset of urinary stimuli. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy in controlling primarily nocturia and secondarily urgency and dysuria after 3 months of treatment with combination therapy of protopine and nuciferine syrup. DESIGN: This is a prospective cohort study

Sleep disturbance in men receiving androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer: The role of hot flashes and nocturia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with prostate cancer receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) are at risk of sleep disturbance; however, to the authors' knowledge, the mechanisms by which ADT may affect sleep are not well understood. The current study compared objective and subjective sleep disturbance in ADT recipients and controls and examined whether sleep disturbance in ADT recipients is attributable to the influence of ADT on hot flashes and nocturia. METHODS: Patients with prostate cancer were assessed before or within 1 month after the initiation of ADT as well as 6 months and 12 months later

[Nocturia and nocturnal polyuria in the elderly. Treatment essential for increasing patients' quality of life and decreasing the risk of injury].

Nocturia, i.e. nocturnal voiding episodes, is a symptom which can occur at all ages, but there is an age-related increase in both men and women. Both health and quality of life are deteriorated by nocturia. Sleep is disturbed, with daytime sleepiness and reduced well-being as consequences. The risk of fall injuries is increased among elderly persons who need to get up several times at night for toilet visits. Nocturia is associated with an increase in nocturnal urine output, and an increased number of nocturnal voids indicates a shift of urine output from the daytime to the night. One of the a

Effect of Acupuncture on Urine Production and Storage in Prostate Cancer Survivors With Nocturia: Exploratory Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Nocturia is multifactorial condition, but most treatments only target urine production or storage in isolation. Acupuncture has been shown to decrease nocturia, but its mechanisms remain unclear. This study explores the preliminary effects of acupuncture on urine production and storage to inform future mechanistic hypotheses. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of 3-day frequency volume charts from a clinical trial in which prostate cancer survivors with nocturia were randomized to receive acupuncture or usual care (waitlist control [WLC]). Response to Letter to the Editor on "Unveiling 'Idiopathic' Nocturia: The Central Role of Sleep-Induced Hypogonadism and ANP-Mediated Hemodynamics".

BACKGROUND: We respond to the comments of Lin et al. on our Think Tank review of potential therapeutic avenues for idiopathic nocturia. METHODS: Evidence was synthesized from relevant literature on OSA-associated nocturia, testosterone decline with sleep-induced hypogonadism, and natriuresis-mediated impairment of aquaporin (AQP)-dependent water reabsorption. RESULT: We first clarify that our review was confined to idiopathic nocturia. We also note that "occult OSA" should more accurately be termed undiagnosed OSA, and that the associated nocturia should be classified as secondary rather tha

High prevalence and mortality risk of nocturia in cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome: a national cohort study and clinical validation.

BACKGROUND: Nocturia is increasingly recognized as a manifestation of systemic cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic dysfunction, yet its prevalence and prognostic significance within the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome framework remain unclear. METHODS: We analyzed 11,910 participants from NHANES (2005-2018) and 865 individuals from a hospital-based cohort. Logistic regression assessed associations between CKM stages and nocturia, while Cox proportional hazards models evaluated relationships between nocturia and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in CKM stages 1-4. Endogenous vasopressin and vasopressin receptor 2 in bladder as anti-diuretic / anti-spasmodic targets for the treatment of multifactorial nocturia.

INTRODUCTION: Nocturia, the urge to wake from sleep to void, is targeted sub-optimally by existing drugs that modulate circadian dysregulation of urine production in kidney without alleviating detrusor overactivity, a key aspect in the multifactorial etiology of nocturia. This study reports age-related upregulation of arginine vasopressin (AVP) synthesis in mouse urinary bladder to counter the concurrent decline in the kidneys' ability to concentrate urine, another prevalent symptom of nocturia. METHODS: Adult/aged C57Bl/6 mice of both sexes were anesthetized with isoflurane for bladder perme

G protein-coupled receptor 55 activated by palmitoylethanolamide is associated with the development of nocturia associated with circadian rhythm disorders.

AIMS: Bladder function is regulated by clock genes and dysregulation of circadian bladder function can cause nocturia. The blood concentration of palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), a fatty acid metabolite, changes with circadian rhythm. Clock gene abnormalities demonstrate the highest PEA levels during the sleep phase. PEA is a GPR55 agonist that influences urination; therefore, increased PEA during the sleep phase may cause nocturia. Herein, we investigated the function of GPR55 to evaluate the relationship between GPR55 and nocturia that evoked higher PEA during the sleep phase in patients with ci

Implications of Cardiovascular Disease for Assessment and Treatment of Nocturia in Primary Care: Systematic Review and Nominal Group Technique Consensus.

CONTEXT: Heart conditions affect salt and water homeostasis as a consequence of the underlying condition, compensatory processes, and therapy, and can result in nocturnal polyuria. These processes need to be identified as part of a full evaluation of nocturia. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of nocturia in cardiovascular disease and achieve expert consensus for primary care management. Primary care was defined as a health care setting in which the expertise did not include specialist cardiology. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Four databases were searched from January 2000 to April 2020. Would a new definition and classification of nocturia and nocturnal polyuria improve our management of patients? ICI-RS 2014.

The following is a report of the proceedings of the Nocturia Think Tank sessions of the annual International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society, which took place September 22-24, 2014 in Bristol, UK. The report is organized into sections pertaining to the main topic of discussion focussing on the question as to whether a new definition and classification of nocturia and nocturnal polyuria would improve the outcome of management in our patients. First, discussions identified theoretical and practical shortcomings of current definitions. Secondly, the utility of several nocturnal poly
