The exposure level of environmental harmful substances related to the secondhand smoke in Korean non-smoker adults: data from the second Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS 2012-2014): a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to find the exposure level of environmental harmful substances related to the secondhand smoke (SHS) using a nationally representative data of the general population in Korea. METHODS: Total 3,533 people were included in this study. We compared the proportion exceeding 95 percentile of the concentrations of harmful substances by sex according to SHS exposure. 16 kinds of substances related to tobacco smoke were analyzed including heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, and environmental phenol. For 16 kinds of substances, the odds ratio

Should we consider gallbladder cancer a new smoking-related cancer? A comprehensive meta-analysis focused on dose-response relationships.

The few studies on the association of smoking with gallbladder cancer risk have given conflicting results. Here, we provide the most accurate and up-to-date quantification of the effect of cigarette smoking on gallbladder cancer risk, and investigate for the first time the dose-response relationships. Using an innovative approach for the identification of publications, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies published until March 2019 on the association of smoking with gallbladder cancer risk. Pooled relative risks (RRs) for smoking were estimated using ra

Beyond tobacco: genomic disparities in lung cancer between smokers and never-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is one of the main risk factors for Lung Cancer (LC) development. However, about 10-20% of those diagnosed with the disease are never-smokers. For Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) there are clear differences in both the clinical presentation and the tumor genomic profiles between smokers and never-smokers. For example, the Lung Adenocarcinoma (LUAD) histological subtype in never-smokers is predominately found in young women of European, North American, and Asian descent. While the clinical presentation and tumor genomic profiles of smokers have been widely examined, n

Optimal Cutoff Concentration of Urinary Cyanoethyl Mercapturic Acid for Differentiating Cigarette Smokers From Nonsmokers.

INTRODUCTION: Cotinine is a widely used biomarker for classifying cigarette smoking status. However, cotinine does not differentiate between the use of combustible and noncombustible tobacco products. The increasing use of noncombustible tobacco drives the need for a complementary biomarker for distinguishing cigarette smokers from users of noncombustible tobacco products. AIMS AND METHODS: We evaluated the urinary acrylonitrile metabolite, 2CyEMA, as a biomarker of exposure to cigarette smoke in the US population-representative data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey

Correlation between salivary immunoglobulin A and interleukin-1beta in smokers with dental caries.

Introduction. Dental caries is one of the most common infectious diseases of the oral cavity, and is an inflammatory disease caused by several factors. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is a major mediator of acute inflammation and essential for the development of specific immune responses. The objective of this study was to assess the levels of secretory IgA (s-IgA) and IL-1β in the saliva of smokers with dental caries, and to discover the correlation between these parameters and dental caries. Methods. Saliva samples were collected from 30 smokers, age range 21-70 years, with dental caries, in addition

Assessment of salivary thiocyanate levels and pH in the saliva of smokers and nonsmokers with chronic periodontitis - A comparative study.

BACKGROUND: It has been speculated that the pathogenesis of diseases prompted by cigarette smoking includes oxidative damage by free radicals. Though, definitive evidence that smoking may cause the oxidative modification of target molecules in vivo is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to estimate and compare the levels of salivary Thiocyanate (SCN) and power of hydrogen (pH) in the saliva of smokers and nonsmokers with chronic periodontitis (ChP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A study population consisted of 60 male systemically healthy subjects in the age group of 20-65 years that w

Preliminary Evaluation of Short-Term Abstinence Effects Among Never-Smoking Experienced Users of Modern Electronic Cigarettes.

INTRODUCTION: ECIG use has increased among non-smokers, with the potential negative consequence of developing nicotine dependence. ECIG users report withdrawal symptoms upon abstinence, though the significance of these symptoms has been questioned. This preliminary study aimed to characterize the early timecourse of ECIG withdrawal under forced abstinence. METHODS: Fifteen never-smoking ECIG users completed two conditions whereby participants either abstained from ECIG use (abstinence) or used their own ECIG (ad lib) for 3 h. Puff topography in this latter condition was measured via video obs…

Addressing Intergenerational Inequity in Tobacco-Harm: What Helps Children of Smokers to Remain Nonsmokers?

INTRODUCTION: Children of people who smoke are more likely to take up smoking themselves. In Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), adolescent smoking declined dramatically between 2000 and 2016 despite limited change in parental smoking, demonstrating that the cycle can be broken. AIMS AND METHODS: This study aimed to identify modifiable factors associated with never smoking in Year 10 students (14-15 years) who had at least one caregiver who smoked. We used data from the Youth Insights Survey (2016 and 2018, pooled, N = 5,422) and identified students with at least one caregiver (mother, father, grandpa

The effect of cigarette smoking on bronchoalveolar lavage protein profiles from patients with different interstitial lung diseases.

The proteomic approach applied to the analysis of BAL gives a panorama of the complex network of proteins of different origin and function and their modifications at alveolar level. Cigarette smoking may influence BAL protein composition and it represents the most relevant risk factor for several lung diseases. This review, for the first time, discusses the available literature regarding the effects of cigarette smoking on BAL protein composition of healthy subjects and patients affected by interstitial lung diseases (ILD). The comparison of BAL protein profiles of smokers and non-smoker healt
