OBJECTIVES: Indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are commonly used devices in acute care that may lead to catheter-associated urinary tract infections or noninfectious complications. Responsibilities for IUC are usually shared between nurses and physicians, and a common mental model among the two professional groups is thus essential for a successful reduction in catheter use. The aim of this study was to determine variation in the perceptions of current practices and culture regarding IUC use between these two groups.
METHODS: Nurses and physicians (N = 1579) from seven Swiss hospitals comple

OBJECTIVE: Prostate cancer is one of the most common male cancers in the world and accounts for substantial morbidity, mortality, loss of disability-adjusted life-years, and financial burden to patients and to the community. Metastatic prostate cancer has been managed for over 70 years with androgen deprivation therapy, but further life-prolonging therapies were not available until 2004. Since then, drugs such as docetaxel, abiraterone, enzalutamide, cabazitaxel, radium-223 dichloride, and (not available in Australia) sipuleucel-T have all demonstrated efficacy in prolongation of survival in c

AIM: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to challenge global health systems, especially in South Africa. Nurses are especially vulnerable to TB exposure, because of their prolonged front-line contact with infected patients-especially in primary health care (PHC) clinics. Their infection control practices, influenced by key factors such as knowledge and attitudes towards TB prevention, become an important consideration. The aim of the study was to (1) describe the TB prevention knowledge, attitudes, and practices of PHC nurses in a South African district and (2) explore moderating factors on TB prevent

Introduction. Nurses have a frontier caring role that brings them in close contact with patients' blood and body fluids. An understanding of their professional behavior is essential to assess and minimize the occupational exposure to HIV among them. Objectives. (1) To appraise the knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices of nursing students pertaining to occupational exposure to HIV. (2) To quantify the risk and correlates of exposure to HIV among them. Methodology. Cross-sectional study was conducted in a nursing college of Varanasi, India. BACKGROUND: Although nurses insert and care for many Foley catheters, little is known about nurses' attitudes and knowledge regarding indications for catheter use or methods to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI).
METHODS: An Internet-based survey was sent to a random sample of registered nurses (RNs) in Minnesota. The survey contained demographic questions and 5-point Likert-scale questions regarding indications for Foley catheter placement and effectiveness of various interventions for preventing CAUTI.
RESULTS: Nurses perceived early catheter removal as the most ef

OBJECTIVE: Obstetrician/gynecologists (Ob/Gyn) and nurse practitioners (NP) are essential providers of primary and preventive care for their female patients. Therefore, colorectal cancer (CRC) screening should be part of their routine preventive practices. The purpose of our study is to evaluate the CRC screening practices of these providers.
METHODS: A self-administered survey was mailed to a national sample of 1130 Ob/Gyns and NPs to assess providers' demographics, current CRC screening practices, and familiarity with CRC guidelines.
RESULTS: Three hundred thirty-six providers (29.7%) retu

Health care workers are exposed daily to blood borne injury and infection with a high risk of hepatitis B or C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. In the 1980s, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed a set of protocols and guidelines known as standard precautions (SP) to prevent accidental transmission of pathogens. The SP should be followed for each intervention or delivery of care in order to protect health care workers from risks associated with contact with blood and other biological liquids. A survey was conducted in a Western Algerian universit

Because the availability of new, peripherally acting mu-opioid-receptor antagonists is expected soon, it is important for all members of the surgical team to familiarize themselves with new approaches and also re-evaluate older approaches to help improve patient outcomes. "Preop nurses" have numerous responsibilities, among which are mitigating some of the adverse outcomes of surgery such as postoperative ileus (POI), making these nursing personnel indispensable to the proper implementation of multimodal management protocols for POI. Establishing basic preoperative procedures is an important p

Recently, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) implemented new national core measures, including tobacco-cessation interventions for patients hospitalized because of pneumonia or other pulmonary-related illnesses, acute myocardial infarction, or heart failure. All interventions performed for such patients must be documented in the patient's chart. Because the JCAHO standards for tobacco cessation are implemented hospital-wide, acute and critical care nurses must take an active role in their execution. This article discusses the challenges to integrating tob

The objective of this study was to assess the perceptions of some Nigerian nurses on the various societal beliefs about teething. A cross sectional survey was conducted among 542 nurses in the teaching, general and Local Government hospitals and clinics in Ibadan, a city in south western Nigeria. The outcome of the study revealed that the majority of the nurses believed that loss of appetite, crying, increased salivation and general irritability were a necessary part of the teething process. Furthermore, 82,1%, 61,4% and 27,9 % of them implicated fever, diarrhoea and boils respectively as sign

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: To describe the role of an oncology nurse practitioner in a breast cancer prevention clinic.
DATA SOURCES: Published articles, abstracts, and book chapters and personal experience.
DATA SYNTHESIS: Validated risk assessment models and genetic screening can be used to assess an individual's risk for breast cancer. Lifestyle changes and medical interventions can reduce that risk.
CONCLUSIONS: Interventions for primary prevention of breast cancer soon may become one of the most effective means of reducing the incidence, morbidity, and mortality of breast cancer.
IMPLICATION

Thirty-three percent of patients with heart failure (HF) are readmitted to the hospital with worsening disease within 90 days of discharge. Acute decompensation accounts for nearly 50% of these admissions because of nonadherence with diet guidelines, medication regimens, or both. One way to promote adherence is through a disease management approach that can prevent HF decompensation by providing aggressive follow-up care. Within such an approach, advanced practice nurses can use a decision algorithm to implement pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions. This article presents a diuretic
