Behaviour change interventions improve maternal and child nutrition in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review.

Evidence that nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions can improve maternal and child nutrition status in sub-Saharan Africa is inconclusive. Using behaviour change theory and techniques in intervention design may increase effectiveness and make outcomes more predictable. This systematic review aimed to determine whether interventions that included behaviour change functions were effective. Six databases were searched systematically, using MeSH and free-text terms, for articles describing nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive behaviour change interventions published in Eng

Addressing mealtime behaviours of children with autism spectrum disorders in schools: a qualitative study with educators in Mumbai, India.

This study was conducted to explore the experiences of educators with mealtime behaviours of children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in schools, and to explore the strategies undertaken in schools to improve nutrition among these children. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 educators of various special schools across Mumbai. They described their experiences with 3-11 year-old children with a diagnosis of ASD. Four themes emerged from this study: reasons for disruptive mealtime behaviours, using mealtimes as opportunities for indirect learning, strategies used to av

["Care" and public nutrition].

In 1990, the Unicef conceptual framework for nutrition recognised the role of care, along with household food security and health services and environment, as one of the three underlying factors of child survival, growth, and development. This model has been adopted at a policy level at the International Conference on Nutrition (Rome, 1992) and over the past ten years the concept of care has been refined through literature reviews, consultative meetings and empirical works. "Care is the provision in the household and the community of time, attention, and support to meet the physical, mental, a

Evaluating the diet quality of elderly Japanese using the Healthy Eating Index-2020.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Globally, efforts are underway to evaluate foods and meals by their nutritional value. In Japan, however, there is no comprehensive system for evaluating overall diet quality. The aim of this study is to use the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2020, which is based on the American Dietary Guidelines, to evaluate the diet quality of independent elderly Japanese people to consider appropriate methods for evaluating the Japanese diet. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: The subjects were 71 individuals aged 60 years or older who participated in a health examination. HEI-2020 was used

Progress of Eastern Mediterranean Countries towards Meeting USDA Dietary Guidelines for Pregnant Women: A Focused Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pregnant women across the globe, in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), face various dietary obstacles during their pregnancy. In this region, characterized by diverse cultural preferences and traditions, emergencies such as conflicts, natural disasters, epidemics, and displacement continue to exist. This influences food insecurity in the region, particularly among pregnant women. This review aims to enhance maternal and fetal health by analyzing these nutritional challenges and assessing women's nutrient consumption in accordance with the USDA's 2020-2025 Nutritional Gu

Selected B vitamins and their possible link to the aetiology of age-related sarcopenia: relevance of UK dietary recommendations.

The possible roles of selected B vitamins in the development and progression of sarcopenia are reviewed. Age-related declines in muscle mass and function are associated with huge and increasing costs to healthcare providers. Falls and loss of mobility and independence due to declining muscle mass/function are associated with poor clinical outcomes and their prevention and management are attractive research targets. Nutritional status appears a key modifiable and affordable intervention. There is emerging evidence of sarcopenia being the result not only of diminished anabolic activity but also

Zinc and copper: proposed fortification levels and recommended zinc compounds.

Micronutrient fortification of foods is now a highly relevant tool worldwide for overcoming micronutrient deficiency. Recent data show that subclinical zinc deficiency is widespread; in Mexico a national survey showed that 25% of children less than age 11 y had plasma zinc concentrations below 10.0 micromol/L (65 microg/dL). Copper deficiency in populations is unknown but copper supplementation is recommended to accompany zinc supplementation. Of the foods available for fortification, staple cereals are very good candidates for reducing micronutrient deficiencies. Because of its higher stabili

Energy and protein intake in 330 geriatric orthopaedic patients: Are the current nutrition guidelines applicable?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Elderly orthopaedic patients are potentially at a high nutritional risk. The reasons for this are numerous as i.e. reduced appetite, sensation of satiety after eating small amounts of food, multi-medication or immobility. This is in contrast to the increased energy and protein recommendations for geriatric orthopaedic patients. METHODS: Oral intake during hospitalization of more than 1000 geriatric orthopaedic patients aged over 80, with or without fracture, was recorded, calculated and then compared to energy and protein requirements by clinical dietitians according to i

Vitamin A status of the minority ethnic group of Karen hill tribe children aged 1-6 years in Northern Thailand.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is the most common cause of childhood blindness in the developing world. It is estimated that by giving adequate vitamin A, in vitamin A deficient populations, child mortality from measles can be reduced by 50%, and mortality from diarrheal disease by 40%. Overall mortality in children 6-59 months of age can be reduced by 23%. This paper reported results from a study of vitamin A status and malnutrition of the minority ethnic group of Karen hill tribe children aged 1-6 years in the north of Thailand. All children aged 1-6 years (N = 158; 83 boys, 75 girls) from the t

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of healthcare professionals in nutritional management of patients with pressure ulcers: an online survey in Flanders and the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Pressure ulcers (PUs) are prevalent chronic wounds associated with pain, infection, and prolonged hospitalisation. Adequate nutrition is important in both preventing and healing PUs; however, malnutrition frequently co-occurs and nutritional care in clinical practice remains suboptimal. This study aimed to explore healthcare professionals' knowledge, attitudes, practices, and perceived barriers to nutritional care for PU patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and home care settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 284 Flemish and Dutch healthcare professionals was condu

The integration of school nutrition program into health promotion and prevention of lifestyle-related diseases in Japan.

After World War II, Japan has imported food from other countries to solve malnutrition, and then dietitians provided nutrition education to people for effective food utilization. Flour and skimmed milk imported from the United State were distributed to the school lunch program. Dietitians were trained to encourage the people to adapt western style dietary habits. The western style dietary habit issues have been brought since in 1980's as overeating and obesity have been considered as nation's health problems. In the 1990's, the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases became key

Nutrition in pregnancy: mineral and vitamin supplements.

Pregnancy is associated with physiologic changes that result in increased plasma volume and red blood cells and decreased concentrations of circulating nutrient-binding proteins and micronutrients. In many developing countries, these physiologic changes can be aggravated by undernutrition, leading to micronutrient deficiency states, such as anemia, that can have disastrous consequences for both mothers and newborn infants. Multiple micronutrients are often taken by pregnant women in developed countries, but their benefits are limited, except for prophylactic folic acid taken during the pericon

From waste to nutrition: valorization strategies for surplus and ugly produce within the Food Use and Waste Hierarchy.

Fruit and vegetables (F&Vs) account for approximately 50% of global food loss and waste (FLW). This represents an environmental and economic burden, as well as a significant, yet often overlooked concern for human nutrition. At the farm level, surplus (products for which there is no buyer) and "ugly produce" (products rejected for failing aesthetic standards) are often discarded or diverted for low value uses, such as composting or animal feed, despite retaining a good nutritional and functional quality. Current valorization frameworks, including the EU Food Use and Waste Hierarchy (FUWH), pri

Implementing nutrition guidelines that will benefit homeless people.

The nutritional status of single adult homeless people is often overlooked, with many of the homeless population being malnourished due to a variety of reasons. This paper looks at the government's policies relating to nutrition and at the current research concerning home-lessness and diet. It also offers various strategies for improving the nutritional intake and status of this client group. It discusses the issues surrounding the use of dietary supplements, ways to minimise the risk of misuse, and highlights possible alternatives. A guideline has been devised with the specific aim of identif
