Non-Allergic Contact Dermatitis in Different Professions: The Analysis in the Triveneto Region (Northeast of Italy) Patch Test Database from 1997 to 2023.

Contact dermatitis (CD) is one of the most common occupational skin diseases worldwide, and patch tests are used to identify allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Half of the cases were negative for patch tests (non-ACD). In our study, we aim to analyze patch test negativity in different occupational groups from the Triveneto (northeast Italy) Patch Test Database and to identify associated demographic and exposure-related factors. Data from 31,948 patients evaluated for suspected ACD between 1997 and 2023 were analyzed. All participants underwent clinical examination, completed a standardized que

Back disorder incidence and occupation in Denmark: a cross-sectional register-based study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present paper is (1) to describe the occupational distribution of persons with incident back disorders and (2) to determine the incidence rate ratio (RR) for back pain amongst patients working in specific occupation groups. METHODS: Using Danish registries, a total of 20,921 employed persons with incidents back disorders aged 18-64 years were identified in 2016 based on the inclusion criteria from the Danish Back Register. RR was estimated to test for differences in incident back disorder diagnoses across occupations. Pearson's Chi-square test was used to test for

The influence of occupational noise exposure on blood pressure and hearing loss among female workers of childbearing age.

OBJECTIVES: Women exposed to occupational noise experience adverse pregnancy outcomes. Therefore, we initiated a large, population-based, cross-sectional study to further investigate the effects of occupational noise on hearing and blood pressure among female workers of childbearing age. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A total of 6981 childbearing-aged female workers were selected for this cross-sectional study. Basic characteristics of participants were analyzed by comparing the exposed and control groups. Logistic regression models were employed to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confiden

Global, regional and national burdens of occupational injuries, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational injuries pose a significant challenge to global health and development. This study aimed to quantify the international and regional burdens of occupational injuries from 1990 to 2019, stratified by specific causes. METHODS: We analysed global trends in deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), age-standardised mortality rates (ASMR) and age-standardised DALY rates (ASDR) related to occupational injuries. Specific injuries, including animal contact, drowning, mechanical forces, falls, fire, heat, hot substances, foreign bodies, poisoning and road injuries, were e

Racial and ethnic inequities to noise pollution from transportation- and work-related sources in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic inequities in environmental noise exist in the US, partially attributable to historical structural racism. However, previous studies have not considered the totality of people's exposures. Since people spend most of their waking time at work, there is a need to consider cumulative exposure to noise both in and out of the workplace to understand who is most at risk of noise pollution-related adverse health outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To (1) investigate whether racial and ethnic minority communities are disproportionately burdened by transportation- and workplace-related

Airborne seafood allergens as a cause of occupational allergy and asthma.

Occupational allergy and asthma is a serious adverse health outcome affecting seafood-processing workers. Allergic reactions are directed to two major seafood groups: fish and shellfish, with the latter group comprising crustaceans and molluscs. Several allergenic proteins have been identified in these different groups, but few have been characterised on a molecular level. Parvalbumin appears to be the major fish allergen, while tropomyosin the major crustacean allergen. Other IgE-binding proteins have also been identified in molluscs and other seafood-associated agents (e.g. Anisakis sp), alt

Cost effectiveness of the occupation-based approach for subacute stroke patients: result of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The cost effectiveness of occupational therapy for subacute stroke patients is unclear in the extant literature. Consequently, this study determined the cost effectiveness of the occupation-based approach using Aid for Decision-Making in Occupation Choice (ADOC) for subacute stroke patients compared with an impairment-based approach. METHODS: We conducted an economic evaluation from a societal perspective alongside a pilot randomized controlled trial, with a single blind assessor for participants in 10 subacute rehabilitation units in Japan. Occupational Hearing Loss among Chinese Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Workers: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational hearing loss is an increasingly prevalent occupational condition worldwide, and has been reported to occur in a wide range of workplaces; however, its prevalence among workers from municipal solid waste landfills (MSWLs) remains less clear. This study aimed to investigate the occupational hearing loss among Chinese MSWL workers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 247 workers from 4 Chinese MSWLs was conducted. Noise and total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) levels at worksites were determined. We conducted hearing examinations to determine hearing thresholds. A wo

Regional Gray Matter Volume Related to High Occupational Stress in Firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Firefighters inevitably encounter emotionally and physically stressful situations at work. Even firefighters without diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder receive clinical attention because the nature of the profession exposes them to repetitive trauma and high occupational stress. This study investigated gray matter abnormalities related to high occupational stress in firefighters using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and surface-based morphometry (SBM). METHODS: We assessed 115 subjects (112 males and 3 females) using magnetic resonance imaging and evaluated occupational stress

Mismatch Between Exposure Risk and Protection: Occupational Inequities in COVID-19 Prevention Among Field-Based Utility Workers in South Africa.

OBJECTIVE: Field-based workers faced unique occupational risks during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study assessed occupational disparities in COVID-19 exposure, vaccination uptake, PPE adequacy and implementation of preventive measures among utility workers. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 154 South African workers in a power distribution company. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analysed using multivariable logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios. RESULTS: Technical workers had significantly higher workplace exposure and lower vaccina

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial with 1-year follow up. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether people with low back pain (LBP) and self-reported physically demanding jobs, benefit from an occupational medicine intervention, in addition to a single hospital consultation and a magnetic resonance imaging, at 1 year of follow-up. Secondly, to examine whether the positive health effects, found in both groups at 6 months, persist at 1-year follow-up. The role of borderline personality disorder symptoms on absenteeism & work performance in the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA).

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) were previously found to be associated with decreased work performance, even after controlling for depressive and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, co-occurrence of BPD and affective disorders is common. Therefore, we examined the effect of BPD symptoms on occupational functioning in workers with affective disorders. METHODS: Healthy workers (n = 287), workers with current depression/anxiety only (n = 195), workers with BPD symptoms only (n = 54), and workers with both depression/anxiety and BPD symptoms (n = 103) were selected from
