Through a Different Lens: Occupational Health of Sex-Working Young Trans Women.

PURPOSE: Sex work is a common form of work among young trans women (YTW). METHODS: Using an occupational health frame, we measured associations between demographics, sex work, and vocational outcomes in 18-month visit data from the SHINE study (n=263, San Francisco). RESULTS: Overall, 41.8% reported lifetime sex work, primarily escorting/paid sex. Motivations included "better pay" and "can't get a job due to gender discrimination." Occupational injuries included anxiety (53.6%) and depression (50%), with significantly higher relative risk for YTW doing multiple types of sex work. Criminaliza…

Supporting self-determination in mental health recovery: Strategies employed by occupational therapists.

INTRODUCTION: Self-determination is a core component of mental health recovery and a predictor of positive outcomes. The literature calls for occupational therapists to lead practice change to greater recovery-orientation, including facilitating people's self-determination. However, systemic challenges thwart translation of policy into practice and therapists report a lack of confidence in implementing recovery-oriented principles. This study aimed to understand the strategies that mental health occupational therapists employ to support people's self-determination. METHODS: Data were collecte

Evidence-based occupational health and safety interventions: a comprehensive overview of reviews.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational injuries and diseases are a huge public health problem and cause extensive suffering and loss of productivity. Nevertheless, many occupational health and safety (OHS) guidelines are still not based on the best available evidence. In the last decade, numerous systematic reviews on behavioural, relational and mixed interventions to reduce occupational injuries and diseases have been carried out, but a comprehensive synopsis is yet missing. The aim of this overview of reviews is to provide a comprehensive basis to inform evidence-based decision-making about interventions …

Assessment of Occupational Health Hazards Due to Particulate Matter Originated from Spices.

Spices have been known for their various health activities; however, they also possess the allergic potential for the respiratory system and the skin as they are fine particulate matter. Persons involved in spice agriculture and food industries are at greater risk since they are exposed to a considerable amount of combustible dust, which may be the cause of fire and explosion and adversely affect the health. These workers may experience allergy, long-term and short-term respiratory issues including occupational asthma, dermatitis, etc. Some spices induce T cell-based inflammatory reaction upon

Technical, occupational health and environmental aspects of metal degreasing with aqueous cleaners.

Aqueous cleaners used for metal degreasing are detergent formulations containing surfactants (such as linear alkylbenzene sulphonates, alkyl … ay include drying and rinsing steps. Because of the complexity and variability of the mixtures, the occupational health and environmental evaluation of aqueous cleaners is based on the study of their components. Aqueous cleaners are generally believed to present a low risk to workers' health and to the environment. However, some anionic surfactants and strong alkalis …

Managing occupational risks for hepatitis C transmission in the health care setting.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant contemporary health problem in the United States and elsewhere. Because it is primarily transmitted via blood, hepatitis C infection presents risks for both nosocomial transmission to patients and occupational spread to health care workers. Recent insights into the pathogenesis, immunopathogenesis, natural history, and treatment of infection caused by this unique flavivirus provide a rationale for the use of new strategies for managing occupational hepatitis C infections when they occur. This article reviews this developing information. Recent

Occupational disease among minority workers: a common and preventable public health problem.

1. Minority workers are overrepresented in the most hazardous jobs and, as a result, are at high risk of developing occupational diseases. 2. Due to various social and economic factors, minority workers with occupational diseases are less likely than white workers to come to health care attention and be correctly diagnosed as having an occupational disease. 3. Occupational health clinics and providers need to discuss options for treatment clearly with the client and, when appropriate, be persistent in negotiating with employers to reduce or eliminate harmful exposures, while remaining sensitiv…

Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic-what Occupational Safety and Health can bring to Public Health.

We strive to increase public (PH) and occupational health (OSH) inter-linkages by building a collaborative framework. Besides Covid-19 pandemic, recent approaches such as Human Exposome and Total Worker Health TM, have led to a shift to improving health of working population and consequently the total population. These health objectives can be best realised through primary care actors in specific contexts. Work, school, home and leisure are the four multi-stakeholder contexts in which health and healthcare (goal-oriented care) objectives needs to be set and defined. PH policy makers need to es…

Occupational health and safety, metal exposures and multi-exposures health risk in Canadian electronic waste recycling facilities.

Electronic waste recycling (e-recycling) involves manual operations that expose workers to toxic metals. We aim to describe occupational health and safety practices and workers' exposures to metals in the Canadian formal e-recycling industry, and to estimate the health risk associated with multiple exposures. This cross-sectional study documented practices through observations and questionnaires, and assessed metal exposures using personal air samples and biomarkers. Health risks were estimated relative to recognised occupational exposure guidelines, and using an additive approach for consider…
