Immunohistochemical demonstration of S-100 protein in Langerhans cells (LCs) was made in odontogenic epithelial tumours (71 cases), radicular cysts (40 cases), follicular cysts (28 cases), odontogenic keratocysts (11 cases), primordial cysts (7 cases) and fissual cysts (6 cases). With the use of polyclonal antiserum against S-100 protein, positive LCs, dendrical or irregular in shape were found in tumour or cystic epithelia, and sometimes in stromal connective tissue. Incidence of positive S-100 staining LCs was 11 cases out of 61 ameloblastomas, 22 cases out of 40 radicular cysts, 3 cases of

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic neoplasms have some morphologic overlap with salivary gland neoplasms, many of which show myoepithelial differentiation. In the 1980s, an ultrastructural study identified a population of myoepithelial-like cells in calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor. Myoepithelial derived tumors have since been shown to have distinct immunohistochemical profiles.
METHODS: We examined a series of odontogenic neoplasms, including 11 ameloblastomas, four calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumors, five glandular odontogenic cysts (GOCs), and five keratocystic odontogenic tumors with a …

Glandular odontogenic cyst is a rare developmental odontogenic cysts of the jaws having an aggressive behavior. The most common site of occurrence is the anterior mandible, and it is widely seen in middle-aged people. It is suggested that trauma could be a precipitating factor for its occurrence. This article presents the diagnosis and treatment of a case of glandular odontogenic cyst at anterior maxilla that occurred at the same localization of a traumatic bone cyst, 5 years after its management.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is one of the common odontogenic cysts with aggressive clinical behavior and a high recurrence rate. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process, in which the epithelial cell loses its epithelial characteristics and acquires mesenchymal features. Since the evidence for the involvement of EMT in the development of OKC is still limited, the present study aimed to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of EMT-related proteins (E-cadherin and N-cadherin) in OKC and compare them to radicular cyst (RC) and dentigerous cyst (DC).

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to verify the density of mast cells (MCs) and microvessels in odontogenic cysts. Furthermore, the correlation between MCs and microvessels was evaluated to assess the contribution of MCs to angiogenesis and growth of odontogenic cysts. This approach may be a basis for the development of future pharmaceuticals addressed to MCs performance to manage odontogenic cysts. To our knowledge, no study investigating the correlation between MCs and microvessels has been performed to date.
METHODS: 60 cases of odontogenic cysts consisting of 20 radicular cysts (RCs), 20…

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare odontogenic cyst characterized by distinctive epithelial features and is known for its potential for local aggressiveness and recurrence. Because its clinical presentation and imaging characteristics substantially overlap with those of other odontogenic cysts and tumors, establishing a preoperative diagnosis is often challenging, and a definitive diagnosis relies on histopathological evaluation. We report the case of a 46-year-old man in whom panoramic radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) failed to yield diagnost…

Actinomycosis rarely occurs in the sinonasal region. Here, we report a case of sinonasal actinomycosis associated with an odontogenic cyst o … f antibiotic therapy. To our knowledge, there have been no reports of actinomycosis associated with odontogenic cysts of ectopic dental origin. Although surgery followed by antimicrobial therapy is generally recommended for actinomycosis, sinus surgery alone may have a sufficient bactericidal effect against Actinomyces by exposing the lesion to the open air. The cl …

Stafne first described the term "Stafne bone defects" (SBDs) in 1942. These are unilateral, asymptomatic, well-defined radiolucent lingual bony defects located at the posterior region of the mandible below the inferior alveolar canal. It is most commonly seen in the posterior region, whereas it is relatively rare in the anterior region. This anterior variant of SBD is often misdiagnosed as any other odontogenic cyst, and hence advanced imaging techniques should be followed to identify it at the earliest. Due to the lower prevalence of this entity, only a handful of cases have been documented f

Odontogenic cysts, are located in the jawbones, filled with fluid surrounded by epithelial lining and fibrous connective tissue. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) can induce physiological and pathological angiogenesis and is an endothelial cell-specific mitogen. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether any possible association between the VEGF insertion/deletion (I/D) variant and odontogenic cyst in Turkish population. Clinical information and venous blood samples were collected from 62 odontogenic cyst patients and 98 healthy controls. DNA was isolated from peripheral b…

Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a cyst originating from odontogenic epithelium and has a characteristic ghost cell appearance. Clinically, COC is characterized by asymptomatic swelling, leading to lingual expansion, tooth migration, apical resorption, and perforation of cortical bone. COC is most often asymptomatic and is often only discovered during a routine radiological examination. This case report describes the clinical interventions to manage a patient with mesiodens impacted with COC. The procedure is aimed at evaluating the multidisciplinary management of COC at Universitas Airlan

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC) is a relatively rare odontogenic cyst, distinct from odontogenic keratocyst (OKC). In the 4th edition of WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumors (2017), OOC has been included as a separate entity in the category of developmental odontogenic cysts. It presents as a unilocular radiolucent lesion in the posterior mandible and is frequently related to impacted teeth, thus mimicking dentigerous cyst. Due to low local aggressiveness and no association with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, it does not show tendency to recur. When compared to OKC, OOC ex…

OBJECTIVE: To integrate the available data published on glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) into a comprehensive analysis of its clinical/radiological and histopathological features.
METHODS: An electronic search was undertaken in May/2017. Eligibility criteria included publications having enough clinical/radiological/histological information to confirm the diagnosis.
RESULTS: Fifty-eight publications (169 GOCs) were included. The lesion was slightly more prevalent in men than in women. There was a high prevalence in the fifty/sixth decades of life, in the anterior regions, and in mandibles. Le

OBJECTIVE: Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon developmental cyst. Its molecular pathogenesis is unclear, and deep sequencing may help identify causative low-frequency variants in tumors. We investigated in GOC mutations in 50 genes commonly altered in human cancers.
STUDY DESIGN: Targeted next-generation sequencing was used to interrogate a panel of approximately 2800 mutations in GOC.
RESULTS: Six missense single nucleotide variations (SNVs) were reported. Three SNVs (TP53 rs1042522, KDR rs1870377, and KIT rs3822214) are listed as "common single-nucleotide polymorphisms" at the

Glandular odontogenic cyst is a newly determined jaw entity with aggressive behavior and a high rate of recurrence. There is histopathologic resemblance to other lesions of the jaw such as intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Although enucleation and curettage are not the treatment of choice for this cystic lesion, they comprise the most common method. On the other hand, filling the defect is a controversial matter, especially in lesions with large size. We introduce 4 cases of GOC, of which 2 are cases of recurrence. We applied bone material substitutes in 3 of these cases with success.

To examine the properties of shadow and ghost cells, 3 kinds of antibodies were raised against human hair proteins and their immunoreactivity was examined in tumors expressing those cells: pilomatrixoma, 14 cases; craniopharyngioma, 17 cases; and calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), 14 cases. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blot analyses demonstrated that 2 polyclonal antibodies, PA-HP1 and PA-HP 2, reacted strongly with type I acidic and type II neutral/basic hard alpha-keratins. The other monoclonal antibody, MA-HP1, reacted with type II neutral/basic hard
