[Diclof 0.1% eyedrops in pediatric ophthalmology].

The authors analyze their two years experience with 208 patients hospitalized at the Clinic of Pediatric Ophthalmology treated by the locally administered antiprostaglandin diclophenac, 0.1% eye drops. The spectrum of the disease was wide and comprised different conditions after intraocular surgery, in particular of cataract, glaucoma and perforation injuries, Yag laser capsulotomy, and conservatively treated conditions, in particular inflammatory processes, uveitis and keratoconjunctivitis. Diclophenac was not combined with other non-steroid antiphlogistics but frequently it was adjuvant trea…

[Use of botulinum toxin in ophthalmology].

BACKGROUND: Botulinum Toxin A produces muscle palsies by blocking the neuromuscular transmissions. The numerous applications of Botulinum-chemodenervation in ophthalmology are demonstrated. RESULTS: In blepharospasm und facial hemispasm Botulinum Toxin A injections represent an excellent alternative to medical and surgical therapy. They have to be repeated after several weeks or month. Other indications are spastic entropium and lagophthalmos. In paralytic strabismus Botulinum Toxin injections (intramuscular under EMG control) serve to prevent contracture of the homolateral antagonist and thu…

[Use of botulinum toxin in ophthalmology].

Botulinum toxin A injection in essential blepharospasmus and hemifacial spasmus is an important alternative to surgical therapy. The toxin is injected into the lateral parts of the lower and upper lid in single doses of one to two nanograms under electromyographic control. The effect is visible after a few days and lasts for several months. The procedure can be repeated several times. A second important application of botulinum toxin A is strabismus. In paralytic strabismus the contracture of the antagonist of the paralyzed muscle can be weakened by local injection of botulinum toxin by means

[Use of botulinum toxin in ophthalmology].

We have used botulinum toxin (Oculinum) for the past 2 years to treat strabismus and other ophthalmic conditions. It was effective for blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm, and in producing pharmacological ptosis. There were a few local complications, such as ptosis and diplopia, which disappeared within a few weeks. This is a new treatment modality with specific indications in ophthalmology.

Vitamin metabolism and therapy in ophthalmology.

Vitamin deficiency states are important in the genesis of many ocular disorders. Deficiencies may be due to poor dietary intake, or to alterations in metabolism produced by some commonly prescribed medications or by certain diseases. Furthermore, some vitamins may exert important pharmacologic effects on the normal eye. The ocular effects of deficiencies and excesses of specific vitamins, and the therapeutic uses of each vitamin, are reviewed.

Applications of nuclear medicine in ophthalmology.

Diagnostic techniques using radioactive isotopes can be used for the investigation of cerebral, orbital and intraocular tumours and for the dynamic study of tear flow. The value of such techniques in the study of obstruction of the nasolacrymal system (particularly partial and functional obstructions) has been established and the possibility of using Tc99m clearance for the investigation of dry eyes is being investigated.

Ophthalmological management in craniosynostosis.

INTRODUCTION: In published series, a large proportion of patients with craniosynostosis show impaired vision. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review was performed, using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases, to identify original and review articles on the consequences of craniosynostosis on the eyes and visual pathways, and on the ophthalmological management of craniosynostosis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Many ophthalmic, potentially sight-threatening, complications, can occur in patients with craniosynostosis, especially when syndromic. Optic neuropathy, mostly resulting from the papill

Pemphigus: An Ophthalmological Review.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, and management of pemphigus, with an emphasis on ocular involvement. METHODS: Literature review. RESULTS: Pemphigus is an autoimmune epithelial blistering disease of the skin and mucous membranes. The typical pathological finding is acantholysis of the epidermis that leads to blister formation. Immunofluorescence techniques show autoantibody deposition on the epidermal intercellular substance. Although a genetic background is necessary, environmental factors are crucial for the onset and perpetuation o

Ophthalmological aspects of IBD.

Ocular manifestations occur in 4-12% of patients with IBD. Uveitis and iritis are more frequently associated with ulcerative colitis while episcleritis is more common in Crohn's disease. Some ocular manifestations in IBD can be secondary to treatment and/or effects of the intestinal disease itself. The specific management of ocular manifestations in IBD requires the use of topical steroids and FANS, cycloplegics, systemic steroids or immunosuppressive drugs. When conventional therapies fail to control the ocular manifestations in IBD, the new biologic drugs can be considered as good alternativ
