BACKGROUND: Orbital tuberculosis is a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. We report an interesting case of osteomyelitis of orbital bone in an Indian child.
CASE REPORT: A 9- year old girl presented with a gradually increasing painless swelling of left upper lid and blepharoptosis along with swelling of left side of forehead for last two months. The swelling was soft, fluctuating and non-tender. Diagnostic tap revealed thick pus which prompted us to do an incisional drainage of the abscess. The pus was sterile on microbiological examination. A diagnosis of osteomyelitis of orbi…

BACKGROUND: Standard anthropometric methods applied to measurements of the skull differentials are laden with mistakes stemming from the way the measuring devices are built and from a lack of experience on the part of the researchers. To increase objectivity, digital imaging measurements via computer systems were introduced.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this research was to assess the asymmetry of the male and female orbit with the application of the new graphic methods: raster graphics and vector graphics.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The examination was conducted on 184 well-preserved skulls. The photo…

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are rare spindle cell neoplasms derived from specialized fibroblasts. This tumor was first described in the pleura and later in the whole body including the orbit. Although an SFT is generally a benign tumor malignant transformation and metastasization have also been observed in a few cases. Complete excision is the therapy of choice. Here we report on a 50-year-old male patient whose orbital SFT was removed by transconjunctival anterior orbitotomy and 1.5 years after the operation the patient is recurrence and complaint-free.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with LS have an inborn growth hormone resistance, resulting in failure to generate IGF-1. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the size of the eye and orbit in LS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the MR imaging of the brain in 9 patients with LS for the following parameters: axial diameter of the globe, interzygomatic distance, perpendicular distance from the interzygomatic line to margins of the globe, medial-to-lateral diameter of the orbit at the anterior orbital rim, distance from the anterior orbital rim to the anterior globe, maxi…

Schwannomas are benign encapsulated tumors, originating from Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves. Schwannomas accounts for approximately 1% of all orbital tumors. Most schwannomas originate from branches of the oculomotor, trochlear, trigeminal, and abducens nerves and from sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers. The progressive growth may cause compression of the optic nerve with papilledema or optic atrophy. Prompt diagnosis and early treatment are necessary to avoid important ocular consequences. We report a successful surgical treatment of orbital schwannoma in a 75-year-old woman.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumours (pPNETs) are a group of soft-tissue tumours of neuroepithelial origin that arise outside the central and sympathetic nervous system. Orbital location is infrequent, and to the best of the authors' knowledge only 16 cases have been reported in the literature. With this article, the authors report the demographics and clinical characteristics, diagnostic features, differential diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic options of primary orbital peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumour, based on their patients and on the cases reported in the literature …

We present two cases of patients with orbital lymphoma as a pimary manifestation: (1) Rare, aggressive, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. (2) The most common, low-grade orbital lymphoma originated from marginal zone or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), that underwent special diagnosis and treatment. This study is also to compare morphological changes in non-Hodgkin lymphomas with classical manifestations.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies in the orbit are rare. They can generate more or less serious complications depending on their nature and size. We report an exceptional case of a bulky foreign body in the orbit (the tip of a pen), which did not lead to any complication.
OBSERVATION: A 13-year-old child presented with a right orbital trauma caused by a pen. He consulted 3 months later when a small palpebral swelling appeared. The CT scan showed the presence of a foreign body on the orbital floor. Wound debridement allowed extracting the tip of a pen measuring 3.5cm without any complication. There…

BACKGROUND: Plasma cell tumors of the orbit are uncommon and mostly the first manifestation of a multiple myeloma (MM). Primary extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the orbit is exceedingly rare and only a few cases have been reported so far. Differentiation of an EMP from a MM is important, since 9.5 years have been reported as the mean survival of EMP, compared with a mean survival of 3 to 4 years for multiple myeloma.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 68-year-old man presented with a history of rapid progressive extramedullary plasmacytoma in the right orbit, increasing in size within a few weeks. MR i…

An unusual case of purely cystic bilateral ancient schwannomas of the orbit is reported. Complete ophthalmologic examination and CT was performed. Diagnosis was established by excisional biopsy of both tumors, including clinicopathologic study. Histologic examination showed a bilateral purely cystic ancient schwannoma. This case underlines the importance of considering neural tumors, including schwannomas, in the differential diagnosis of both cystic and bilateral orbital tumors. As far as we know, no other case has been previously reported.

Congenital malformations may affect any part of the eye and the ocular adnexa. Developmental defects may occur in isolation or as part of a larger systemic malformation syndrome. Many malformations can severely impair vision, whereas others have only cosmetic significance, and still others cause no symptoms and may go undiscovered or may be noted incidentally on routine eye examination. Congenital anomalies have numerous causes, most commonly of developmental genetic origin. The genetic basis of congenital eye and orbit anomalies is just beginning to be delineated, and future research on the s…

We describe a sixteen years old male patient that suffered a craniocerebral trauma and presented at the emergency room, with ocular pain, palpebral hematoma and left eye proptosis. Orbital computed tomography showed left subperiosteal orbital hematoma. A surgical drainage was performed. Subperiosteal hematoma of the orbit is a rare cause of proptosis; its early diagnosis must be made in order to avoid possible complications.

A 41-year-old woman had a motor vehicle accident and sustained a fracture of the left temporal bone with anterior and middle skull base involvement. After 10 months, she developed persistent right-sided exophthalmus. Orbital computed tomography scans showed a soft tissue mass in the roof of the right orbit with an inferior calcified border. The surgery revealed a cerebrospinal fluid cyst with intracranial communication through the fistula in the posterior orbital roof.

PURPOSE: To report a case of spermatic cord leiomyosarcoma metastatic to the orbit.
DESIGN: Case report.
METHODS: A 78-year-old man presented with progressive redness, proptosis, and decreasing vision of the left eye of 3 weeks' duration. Computed tomography revealed an intraconal mass (1.5 x 2 cm) inferior to and displacing the left optic nerve.
RESULTS: A left lateral orbitotomy was performed, and a well-demarcated mass was removed from the surrounding tissue. A follow-up computed tomography of the chest and abdomen was consistent with metastatic disease to the lungs and liver.
CONCLUSIO…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The possible relationship of orbit deformities in neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) to plexiform neurofibromas (PNFs) have not been fully elucidated. Our purpose was to review orbital changes in patients with craniofacial NF1.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed CT and MR imaging abnormalities of the orbit in 31 patients (18 male, 13 female; mean age, 14 years; age range 1-40 years) with craniofacial NF1.
RESULTS: Orbital abnormalities were documented in 24 patients. Six had optic nerve gliomas with enlarged optic canals. Twenty had PNFs in the orbit or contiguous to th…

Vascular malformations of the orbit can best be understood within the context of their hemodynamics, of which there are three types. Type 1 (no flow) lesions have essentially little connection to the vascular system and include lymphangiomas or combined venous lymphatic malformations. Type 2 (venous flow) lesions appear as either distensible lesions with a direct and rich communication with the venous system or nondistensible anomalies that have minimal communication with the venous system. Types 1 and 2 can be combined with both features of distensible and nondistensible hemodynamics. Arteria…

Von Recklinghausen's disease is characterized by multiple neurofibromas, pigmentations, and pachydermatoceles of the skin depending on the disorder of the neural crest derivative. We report on a 25-year-old patient suffering from neurofibromatosis localized in the cranio-orbital region, whose main problem was a pulsating right exophthalmos caused by herniation of the frontotemporal lobe through a defect of the greater wing of the sphenoid. The lesion was approached through a combined route (i.e., transfrontally and transfacially [upper eyelid incision]). Surgical strategy and associated proble…

A 14-year-old boy was referred with complaints of decreased vision, pain, and diplopia that developed in his right eye after trauma. Radiologic studies showed an orbital roof fracture with an associated subperiosteal hematoma. Orbital exploration with surgical drainage of the hematoma and roof fracture repair was performed. Postoperatively, he experienced complete visual recovery with resolution of his proptosis and diplopia. Subperiosteal hematomas of the orbit should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute unilateral proptosis after trauma. The authors suggest that early interve…
