UNLABELLED: When cases of dental crowding are identified and diagnosed promptly, interceptive orthodontics is particularly successful.
AIM: To assess the differences in the eruption sequence of the mandibular canine and first premolar teeth in children with and without dental crowding.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children who attended the Shiraz Dental School's orthodontic clinic (Iran) from September to December 2012 were enrolled in this case-control study. Tooth size arch length discrepancy (TSALD) of all 8-10 year olds was calculated from patients' dental models. Thirty-six children were rand

Although there have been continuous improvements in child oral health over recent decades, first permanent molars (FPMs) remain susceptible to early caries and can often be affected by hypomineralisation. We highlight current thinking in caries management and the restoration of hypomineralised FPMs, while also discussing enforced loss of these teeth within the context of interceptive extractions or extractions as part of orthodontic treatment. Compromised FPMs can negatively impact on quality of life for a child and present significant management challenges for the dental team. Although a high

Elastodontics is an interceptive orthodontic therapy that uses light and biological elastic forces through preformed or custom-made removable orthodontic appliances. This study aims to evaluate the effects of elastodontic devices on correcting sagittal discrepancies in growing subjects with mixed dentition. Electronic research was conducted on four databases: PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science. Data were extracted based on the first author, year of publication, setting and country, study design, sample characteristics, sample size calculation, type of malocclusion, intervention, contro

This paper describes delayed development and eruption of the first permanent molars, in most cases only in the upper jaw. The development and eruption of the teeth are chronologically between that of the first and second molars. The anatomy of the aberrant teeth is closest to that of the second molars. The aberrant teeth are often laying at a distance during development from the second primary molars. The clinical implications of the aberrancy are few, because the teeth will normally migrate into close contact with the tooth mesial to them, however, often into a crossbite. Most often the teeth

Individuals with special healthcare needs have increased orthodontic treatment need, but access to care may be insufficient. The aim of this study was to assess the uptake of patients with special needs in orthodontic settings throughout Switzerland. A web-based survey was sent to all specialist orthodontist members of the Swiss Orthodontic Society. From 220 questionnaires sent, 60% were returned (n=131). 84% of participants responded that they treat patients with special needs, but most orthodontists saw only two new patients per year with special needs. Patients most frequently treated were

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) (MIM 119600) is a genetic skeletal disorder characterised by skeletal alterations at numerous bone segments (cranium, clavicles, pelvis) and a typical hyperdontia. It is a hereditary disease of the dominant autosomal type with wide variability of expression. The constant presence of numerous supernumerary teeth poses two orders of problems. On one hand, if these supplementary teeth are impacted, they may constitute a mechanical obstacle to the eruption of normal teeth. If on the contrary they have erupted, they cause aesthetic and functional damage. Surgical thera

Unilateral posterior crossbites have been reported to be one of the most prevalent malocclusions of the primary dentition in Caucasian children. Facial asymmetry due to lateral mandibular displacement in unilateral posterior crossbite, if not treated in the primary dentition period, may lead to an undesirable growth modification which results in facial asymmetry of skeletal origin. Irregular tongue function and posture have also been diagnosed as important etiological factors. Early orthodontic treatment seems to be profitable and desirable to create conditions for normal dental, functional an

Adjacent anomalous or missing maxillary lateral incisors have been implicated in the aetiology of palatally displaced canines by not providing proper guidance to the canine during its eruption. However, a recent review of the literature suggests that the aetiology of palatally displaced canines is genetic in origin. The aetiology of labially impacted canines differs, being due to inadequate arch space. Vertex occlusal radiographs have been recommended for localization but have limitations, and a case is illustrated where this radiograph is deceptive. The prevention/interception of a palatally

The treatment of young people with implants requires advanced planning and coordination of many different specialities within dentistry. Timing and sequence of therapy will often decide the success or failure of treatment. Congenital absence of many teeth (oligodontia) associated with or without syndromes poses not only functional but also psychosocial problems for young people. A case is presented in which orthodontist, restorative dentist, and periodontist evaluated and performed the necessary therapy for a young person who at the age of 9 was diagnosed with oligodontia/l. Nine implants were

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) vs simply monitoring the eruption of permanent maxillary incisors following the surgical removal of obstacles to their eruption (supernumerary teeth, odontomas).
METHODS: Following surgical removal of the obstacles to incisor eruption (T1), 62 patients were randomly assigned to either the group to undergo RME (34 subjects; mean age 8 years, 11 months ± 11 months) or the group that was monitored without further treatment (28 subjects; mean age=9 years, 1 month ± 1 year). At T2 (1 year after T1

Class II malocclusions, after class I malocclusions, are the most frequent in the juvenile Italian population. They are most often skeletal in origin and due to mandibular retrusion. Functional devices seem to have a beneficial effect on the growth of the jaw. Long-term maintenance of the achieved results is essential for therapeutic success in any orthodontic treatment; moreover, the retention phase should last as long as possible, especially in the lower anterior sector. A female patient aged 10 years and 3 months presented a visibly convex profile and a severe mandibular retrusion. The anam
