External Root Resorption of Second Molars Due to Impacted Mandibular Third Molars during Orthodontic Retention.

Whether there is a relationship between impaction of the third molars and the onset of crowding remains to be determined, and extraction of third molars after orthodontic treatment is left to the judgement of the practitioner. This report describes a case where a third molar caused external root resorption (ERR) of the mandibular second molar after orthodontic treatment. As ERR of the mandibular second molar was detected after non-extraction orthodontic treatment, the affected tooth was extracted and substituted with the third molar. External root resorption of the second molar occurred despit

Orthognathic Surgery and Orthodontics: Inadequate Planning Leading to Complications or Unfavorable Results.

Complications in orthognathic surgery are commonly a result of inadequate preoperative planning and communication between the surgeon and orthodontist. Unfavorable outcomes can often be avoided when overall treatment goals along with a surgical and orthodontic plan are developed and agreed upon by the orthodontist, surgeon, and patient before the start of active tooth movement or any surgical procedures. Continuous evaluation of the patient's progress throughout treatment and subsequent communication between the surgeon and orthodontist are recommended to prevent frequent errors, such as inade

Is Orthodontic Treatment with Microperforations Worth It? A Scoping Review.

Malformations of teeth and dental arches can produce functional modifications intermingled with esthetic alterations. Children's rehabilitation may be long, requiring multiple interventions. One of the main challenges of contemporary orthodontics is to reduce treatment time by accelerating orthodontic tooth movements. Among the currently used methods, micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) are flapless, minimally invasive perforations that induce a local trauma to the bone, increase healing capacity, and accelerate dental movements. The use of MOPs in orthodontics is spreading but there are no definit

Silver phosphate as an antimicrobial and remineralizing agent in orthodontic resins.

BACKGROUND: The high incidence of white spot lesions among orthodontic patients highlights the need for strategies to prevent mineral loss in high-risk areas. Silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) nanoparticles offer multifunctional potential by inhibiting biofilm formation and increasing phosphate availability. This study aimed to develop an orthodontic resin with the addition of Ag3PO4 and evaluate its physicochemical and biological properties. METHODS: Ag3PO4 nanoparticles were synthesized through coprecipitation and characterized. The particles were incorporated into orthodontic resins at concentrati

Periodontal tissue reactions to orthodontic extrusion. An experimental study in the dog.

Orthodontic tooth extrusion is used at crown lengthening procedures or in conjunction with periodontal therapy aimed at eliminating or reducing angular bone defects. A technique for orthodontic extrusion combined with resection of the supracrestal attachment fibers (fiberotomy) was recently proposed as an adjunct to certain restorative procedures. The aim of the present investigation was to analyze reactions of the periodontal tissues to orthodontic extrusion when combined with fiberotomy. In 5 beagle dogs, the mesial roots of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th hemisected mandibular premolar were used as ta

Development of a rat model for prophylactic free gingival graft to mitigate orthodontic-related alveolar bone fenestration/dehiscence.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar bone dehiscence/fenestration is common during orthodontic excessive tooth movement, especially in patients with thin gingiva and alveolar bone, compromising treatment outcomes. Free gingival grafting (FGG) shows preventive potential, but its mechanism remains unclear due to limited animal models. METHODS: Forty 6-week-old male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomized into 3 groups: FGG + force (FGG + orthodontic force), Sham + force (incision/suture without graft + force) and Blank (no surgical procedure + no force). Right incisors served as internal controls. Orthodontic

[Orthodontics in general practice. 4. Eruption guidance appliances in orthodontics].

Eruption guidance appliances are recommended for early orthodontic treatment or prevention of malocclusions. The treatment effect of eruption guidance appliances and functional appliances is similar. In addition to dentoalveolar and skeletal effects, eruption guidance appliances would also have myofunctional effects for treating open mouth behaviour and swallowing problems. However, there is no solid evidence for the myofunctional effect claimed. The position of erution guidance appliances in the orthodontic treatment arsenal is limited: early treatment of Angle Class II malocclusion in 2 phas

Effect of CO2 Laser-Assisted Titanium Tetra-fluoride on Demineralization of Enamel Around Orthodontic Brackets.

Introduction: One of the clinical problems following orthodontic treatment is white spot lesions around orthodontic brackets due to enamel demineralization. Confronting enamel demineralization during fixed treatments has long been a challenge for orthodontists. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of CO2 laser and Titanium Tetra-fluoride (TiF4) application on the prevention of enamel demineralization around orthodontic brackets. Methods: Eighty permanent premolars were selected and bonded with brackets. They were randomly divided into four groups (n=20): topical titanium t

Biomechanical and biological responses of periodontium in orthodontic tooth movement: up-date in a new decade.

Nowadays, orthodontic treatment has become increasingly popular. However, the biological mechanisms of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) have not been fully elucidated. We were aiming to summarize the evidences regarding the mechanisms of OTM. Firstly, we introduced the research models as a basis for further discussion of mechanisms. Secondly, we proposed a new hypothesis regarding the primary roles of periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) and osteocytes involved in OTM mechanisms and summarized the biomechanical and biological responses of the periodontium in OTM through four steps, basically in

Interdisciplinary Management of a Class III Anterior Open Bite Malocclusion in a Patient With Cerebral Palsy.

Dentofacial disharmony in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) can lead to low self-esteem and functional limitations. However, medical and behavioral challenges in patients with developmental disorders often prevent dental practitioners from offering the necessary treatment. This report describes the clinical interdisciplinary management of a 20-year-old man with CP, including orthodontic, periodontal, and orthognathic surgery therapy. The patient presented with the chief complaint of having difficulty chewing, was wheelchair dependent, had poor orofacial muscle control, and exhibited a Class II

External apical root resorption concurrent with orthodontic forces: the genetic influence.

Root resorption is a pathological process of multifactorial origin related to the permanent loss of dental root structure in response to a mechanical, inflammatory, autoimmune or infectious stimulus. External apical root resorption (EARR) is a frequent clinical complication secondary to orthodontic tooth movement; apart from variables related to treatment, environmental factors and/or interindividual genetic variations can confer susceptibility or resistance to its occurrence. In this context, genetic predisposition has been described as an etiological factor, together with mechanical factors

Treatment of class 2 division 1 malocclusion with severe short roots of upper central incisors.

The average amount of resorption per root of examined maxillary incisors or anterior teeth is < 1.5 mm during comprehensive orthodontic treatment. About 5% of adults and 2% of adolescents are likely to have at least one tooth with resorption of more than 5 mm during active treatment. Although resorption stops once the active appliances are removed, fortunately, truly severe resorption that threatens the longevity of the tooth or forces a halt to treatment is rare. The fact is, however that orthodontic tooth movement does directly cause irreversible resorption of the root. As the movers of the
