Prolonged fever and heterotopic ossification in a C4 tetraplegic patient. Case report.

Prolonged fever is an uncommon diagnostic problem in a spinal cord injury patient. The underlying causes include recurrent infections, thromboembolic phenomena and central fever. We report a case of heterotopic ossification in a traumatic C4 tetraplegic patient presenting as prolonged fever of 3 months' duration. Treatment with oral indomethacin led to prompt resolution of the fever and acute manifestations of heterotopic ossification. The efficacy of indomethacin in the treatment of heterotopic ossification in spinal cord injury needs to be further confirmed in larger studies.

Salivary duct carcinoma with heterotopic ossification in the parotid gland: A case report.

Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) is one of the most aggressive salivary gland carcinomas. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature bone in non-skeletal tissues. HO can occur in a number of neoplastic lesions. However, its occurrence is markedly rare in salivary gland neoplasms and to the best of our knowledge, SDC with HO has not yet been reported. Therefore, the present report describes the first reported case of SDC with HO in the parotid gland and reviews the clinicopathological features of salivary gland neoplasms with HO. A 38-year-old Japanese male presented with a mass in t

Heterotopic Ossification Originating from the Lacrimal Sac of a Child: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: We present a case of hemolacria, which emerged as an unusual mass in the lacrimal sac. CASE REPORT: A nine-year-old girl presented with intermittent unilateral hemolacria and episodes of dacryocystitis with no further remarkable medical or surgical history. CT scan indicated the presence of well-defined calcified tissue enclosed within the lacrimal sac. Following external dacryocystorhinostomy, well-formed firm tissue resembling bony tissue was extracted and sent for pathological evaluation, along with biopsies from the lacrimal sac. Histopathological analysis revealed heterotopic bo

The Use of Acellular Dermal Matrix for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Radioulnar Heterotopic Ossification.

Posttraumatic distal radioulnar heterotopic ossification (DRU HO) is a rare condition characterized by impaired pronosupination due to bone formation between the radius and ulna. Proposed management techniques have included physical therapy, radiation, medication, limited resection, ostectomy, and arthrodesis. However, no single technique has emerged as the standard of care due to high rates of persistence and recurrence. Some authors have described the use of autologous interposition grafting or the placement of cadaveric tensor fasciae latae, but these methods are associated with donor-site

The utility of ultrasound examination in cubital tunnel syndrome caused by heterotopic ossification.

This case presents the utility of ultrasound examination in diagnostics, providing accurate therapy and follow-up of entrapment syndrome of the ulnar nerve, caused by heterotopic ossification. The heterotopic ossifications were in this case presumably linked to a long-term working with a vibration sander.

An unusual case of bowel obstruction in emergency surgery: The heterotopic mesenteric ossification.

The heterotopic mesenteric ossification, also known as myositis ossificans, is a rare form of heterotopic ossification, a metaplastic phenomenon where new bone is formed in the mesenteric base, generally after abdominal trauma (surgical or other). The pathophysiology of heterotopic mesenteric ossification is unknown; clinical presentation is not specific, with vague abdominal symptoms, uncertain radiological findings, and often regular laboratory exams. No consensus exists on the best possible approach, although it might well be both medical and surgical. We reviewed the clinical history of a

Long-term results of radiation prophylaxis for heterotopic ossification in the temporomandibular joint.

PURPOSE: To assess the long-term efficacy and toxicity of radiation therapy (RT) for postoperative prophylaxis of recurrent heterotopic ossification (HO) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twelve patients (18 joints) with bony ankylosis of the TMJ from HO were referred to undergo RT after arthrotomy with osseous recontouring, gap arthroplasty, or costochondral grafting. Treatment consisted of 10 Gy in 5 daily fractions to a field encompassing the TMJ with an adequate margin. RT was initiated 1 to 3 days postoperatively. Response to therapy was assessed by routine x-ra

Operative release of ankylosis of the elbow due to heterotopic ossification. Surgical technique.

BACKGROUND: Although uncommon, complete ankylosis of the elbow secondary to heterotopic ossification results in severe disability. The results of surgical management remain unclear. METHODS: A single surgeon used a consistent operative technique to treat complete osseous ankylosis of the elbow in eleven limbs in seven patients after severe burns and in nine elbows in eight patients after trauma. The elbows in the burn cohort were more often ankylosed in extension (average, 47 degrees of flexion) compared with those in the trauma cohort (66 degrees of flexion), and they had more skin problems

Continuous passive motion in the management of heterotopic ossification in a brain injured patient.

We report a man admitted to inpatient rehabilitation 6 wk after traumatic brain injury, who presented with bilateral knee heterotopic ossification. In addition to conventional physical therapy, we applied a continuous passive motion device during 4 wk increasing the range of motion of the knees. On the basis of the limited current literature and this case, we suggest that the use of continuous passive motion devices for heterotopic ossification may be effective and safe and should be the subject of further study.

The suppression of heterotopic ossifications: radiation versus NSAID therapy--a prospective study.

This prospective, randomized study compares the effect of postoperative irradiation and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) therapy on the prevention of heterotopic ossifications after the implantation of a total hip endoprosthesis. A total of 154 operations were performed; one group of patients underwent radiation treatment of 3 x 3.3 Gy, and the other group took 3 x 50 mg of diclofenac per day over a period of 3 weeks. Average age, sex, preoperative diagnosis, and risk factors were similar in both groups. Postoperative radiation began on average 2.9 days after operation, and the radi

Heterotopic ossification about the hip after intramedullary nailing for fractures of the femur.

A prospective study of 100 consecutive unilateral fractures of the shaft of the femur was performed to delineate the incidence of, and the factors predisposing to, heterotopic ossification about the hip after intramedullary nailing. Bone debris from reaming of the endosteal canal is deposited in the soft tissues surrounding the site of insertion of the nail, and we postulated that this debris may stimulate the formation of heterotopic bone and that decreasing the amount of debris left in the tissues after nailing may decrease the amount of heterotopic ossification. To test this theory, the pat

Heterotopic ossification of the intestinal mesentery. Report of a case following intraabdominal surgery.

In a 55-year-old male a nodular mass of heterotopic ossification developed in the intestinal mesentery two weeks after coloproctectomy for severe ulcerative colitis. The lesion was located close to the ileostoma where it encroached upon the intestinal wall and led to luminal obstruction. Histological examination of the tumour mass showed actively proliferating mesenchymal cells forming irregular areas of primitive osteoid and bone. The process appeared consistent with an early stage of heterotopic ossification where the short history explains the absence of the "zone phenomenon" usually charac

Postoperative heterotopic ossification in patients with ankylosing hyperostosis on the spine (Forestier's disease).

Heterotopic ossification following hip surgery occurred in three patients with ankylosing hyperostosis of the spine. No technical difficulty during surgery was encountered in these individuals. The occurrence of this postoperative complication, coupled with the appearance of bony outgrowths at sites of ligament attachment throughout the axial and extra-axial skeleton in patients with ankylosing hyperostosis of the spine, suggests the presence of an underlying ossifying diathesis, diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). A significant number of patients with DISH possess the second segr

Influence of coracoclavicular heterotopic ossifications in treatment of clavicular fractures : Case report.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) arising from inflammatory processes often results in bony transformation of soft tissue. While the occurrence of HO is well-documented, its biomechanical influence on clavicular fractures remains less explored. We present a case report of a patient with a clavicular fracture following a bicycle accident, accompanied by incidental findings of HO around the coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old man presented with a displaced right-sided clavicular fracture and a cervical vertebral body fracture following a bicycle fall. Incid

Activin A secretion by muscle-repairing macrophages induces heterotopic ossification in mice.

The immune system is not only essential for host defense, but it is also involved in tissue maintenance and disease pathogenesis. Macrophages play a key role in tissue repair, fibrosis, and tumorigenesis, but the mechanisms underlying their multifunctionality have not been fully explored. Here, we identified Mrep (Ly6ChiCX3CR1loPDPN+CD9+) as a crucial subset of macrophages for muscle regeneration after muscle injury. Muscle regeneration required Mrep-derived activin A, which was produced via the TLR4/TIR domain-containing adapter-inducing interferon-β/TANK-binding kinase 1/interferon regulator

Bone fragility in a post-intestinal transplant patient with mesenteric heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the aberrant formation of mature lamellar bone in extraskeletal tissues, most commonly following trauma or surgery. Mesenteric involvement is rare and often discovered incidentally. We report the case of a 44-yr-old man with mesenteric HO in the setting of multiple emergent abdominal surgeries after a motor vehicle accident. Histopathology confirmed bone with cartilage and BM within the mesentery. He subsequently required an isolated small-intestinal transplantation for short gut syndrome. Following transplantation, the patient developed multiple vertebral comp

Impact of Heterotopic Ossification on Range of Motion Following Cervical Disc Replacement.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of heterotopic ossification (HO) severity on segmental and global cervical range of motion (ROM) following cervical disc replacement (CDR). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Heterotopic ossification is the most commonly reported complication following CDR, with rates ranging from 40% to over 70% at mid- to long-term follow-up. While high-grade HO is known to restrict motion, the dose-response relationship between HO severity and ROM across multiple spinal levels remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: Patients who un

Heterotopic Ossification After COVID-19: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

We report a 31-year-old woman hospitalized for approximately two months for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Under sedation, she received physiotherapy to prevent joint contractures. When weaning from the mechanical ventilator began, she complained of pain and limited range of motion in her bilateral hip and knee joints. Radiography and computed tomography revealed non-traumatic heterotopic ossification (HO) in the bilateral vastus medialis and hips. Range-of-motion exercises were discontinued, and treatment with indomethacin and etidronate disodium was started. Alkaline phosphat

Engineered myeloid precursors differentiate into osteoclasts and resorb heterotopic ossification in mice.

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) occurs following orthopedic trauma, spinal cord injuries, brain trauma and limb amputations. Once symptomatic, HO causes pain, limited mobility and decreased quality of life. Current treatments are limited and have significant complications with high recurrence rates, underscoring the need for improved therapeutic interventions. Osteoclasts (OCs) are physiological bone resorptive cells that secrete enzymes and protons to degrade bone. METHODS: In this study, we describe the use of genetically engineered OCs as a novel cell therapy approach to treat
