The varus-valgus stability of 20 knees with unicompartmental osteoarthritis was studied in vivo at the time of total knee replacement. Intact osteoarthritic knees had an average of 11.0 degrees of varus-valgus motion. Removal of osteophytes from the osteoarthritic compartment significantly increased the motion to 13.1 degrees (P less than 0.05), while subsequent removal of osteophytes from the nonosteoarthritic compartment further increased motion to 14.7 degrees (P less than 0.025). In primarily unicompartmental osteoarthritis, marginal osteophytes appear to stabilize osteoarthritic knees, bu…

Osteophyte is an outgrowth of cartilage formed at the margins of the affected joint through endochondral ossification-like processes, and is one of the most common radiographic features of osteoarthritis (OA) that has been used to define the stage of disease. Osteophyte has been regarded to adapt the joint to the altered biomechanics of OA patients, limits joint movement and represent a source of joint pain, however, the mechanism of osteophyte formation, the morphology characteristics and biomechanical properties of osteophyte cells are remained unclear. In the present study, we isolated oste…

The objective of the present study is to demonstrate that a newly developed selective c-Fos/activator protein (AP)-1 inhibitor, T-5224, inhi … he T-5224-treated group by immunohistochemical staining. Micro-CT analysis showed mild but apparent osteophyte development in the femoral condyle and antero-medial aspect of the tibia in the vehicle-treated group but not in the T-5224-treated group. Taken together, specific inhibition of c-Fos/AP-1 and the resulting inhibition of the transactivation of a bro …

PURPOSE: To investigate the surgical outcome of patients with osteophyte-associated dysphagia (OAD) using the functional outcome swallowing scale (FOSS).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 10 surgical cases of OAD (9 male and 1 female patient; mean age of 65 years) from 1982 to 2017 was performed, and radiographic evaluations were conducted by video fluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) and conventional radiography. All OAD cases were treated at a single institution, and osteophytes were surgically resected by the anterior approach under gentle retraction of the affected esophagus. FOSS (0 …

PURPOSE: An accurate fit of a patient-specific instrument guide during an intervention is one of the critical factors affecting accuracy of the surgical procedure. In this study, we investigated how well osteophytes, which are abnormal bone growths that form along joints, are depicted in clinical preoperative CT scans and estimated the influence of such depiction errors on the intraoperative accuracy of the guide.
METHODS: In 34 hip resurfacing patients, 227 osteophyte surface points on the anterior aspect of the femoral neck were collected intraoperatively, using an optoelectronic navigation…

A 77-year-old man presented with 2 episodes of waking up with symptoms of vertebrobasilar ischemia (figure, A and B) within 6 months. A CT angiogram showed narrowing of the right vertebral artery due to extrinsic compression by an osteophyte of the superior articular process of the fourth cervical vertebra, compromising the foramen transversarium (figure, C and D). Dynamic angiography demonstrated intermittent vascular occlusion associated with head turning (figure, E-G). After recurrence, surgical decompression of the vertebral artery was performed. Extrinsic compressions of the vertebral art…

BACKGROUND: L5 radiculopathy is a common problem that has several causes. Entrapment of the L5 nerve root by anterior osteophytes at the L5-S1 junction is rarely reported. Posterior decompression of the L5 nerve root is commonly performed, but anterior decompression of the L5 nerve root is not a frequently performed procedure. The purpose of this case report is to describe an uncommon case of L5 radiculopathy caused by the entrapment of the L5 nerve root by an anterior osteophyte.
METHODS: We report the case of a 79-year-old man with a right lower extremity L5 radiculopathy causing excruciati…

Recent studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy might be an effective approach for the treatment of intervertebral … howed no signs of regeneration. X-ray and gross anatomy inspection demonstrated large anterolateral osteophytes. Histological analysis showed that the osteophytes were composed of mineralized tissue surrounded by chondrocytes, with the labelled MSCs among the osteophyte-forming cells. The labelled MSCs were not found in the nucleus. Inflammatory cells were n …

BACKGROUND: Posteromedial olecranon impingement is a common elbow disorder in professional baseball players that results from repetitive valgus extension overload during throwing. Osteophyte formation is a hallmark of this condition. However, its anatomical distribution and progression remain unclear. This study aimed to characterize the distribution of osteophytes in the elbows of professional baseball players using computed tomography (CT) and to evaluate the relationship between osteophyte location and player age.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the CT images of 38 consecutive symptom…

RESULTS: Clinical analysis revealed that BMP-2 expression is significantly upregulated in OA tissues and correlates positively with disease severity. Mechanistically, IL-1β stimulation induced endogenous BMP-2 expression in chondrocytes …

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Despite successful return-to-sport (RTS) outcomes after posteromedial osteophyte resection, one possible consequence of osteophyte removal is increased stress on the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), leading to a UCL injury. It is currently unknown how often overhead athletes who undergo isolated posteromedial osteophyte resection subsequently require UCL reconstruction (UCLR). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to report outcomes following arthroscopic resection of posteromedial osteophytes in overhead athletes and determine whether overhead athletes who underw…

Spontaneous attritional extensor tendon ruptures of the index finger due to carpal bone lesions are uncommon. Here, we report the case of a patient with a spontaneous rupture of the extensor indicis proprius (EIP) and index extensor digitorum communis (EDC2) tendons due to a previously symptomatic dorsal scaphoid osteophyte. A healthy 60-year-old man with right-hand dominance experienced mild pain over the dorsum of his left hand for no particular cause. He was a maker of tatami mats. Nine months later, he noted a sudden snap on the dorsum of his right hand while he was making tatami mats and …

BACKGROUND: To restore neutral limb alignment in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), the procedure usually starts with removing osteophytes in varus osteoarthritic knees. However, the exact effect on alignment correction is unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of osteophyte removal alone during TKA for varus knees on correction of limb alignment on the coronal plane.
METHODS: Fifteen knees with medial osteoarthritis and varus malalignment scheduled for TKA were studied. After registration in a navigation system, each knee was tested at maximum extension, and at 30, 40, an…

Anterior cervical osteophytes are found in 20-30% of elderly patients. Rarely, severe osteophytes can cause dysphagia, dysphonia, and dyspnea. Here, we illustrate a case of severe dysphagia caused by a large post-traumatic osteophyte with oropharyngeal swallow study showing a significant mass effect on the pharynx and resolution following osteophytectomy. We also review the literature regarding the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of symptomatic anterior cervical osteophytes.

Objective Bone marrow stimulation surgeries are frequent in the treatment of cartilage lesions. Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) may be performed after failed microfracture surgery. Alterations to subchondral bone as intralesional osteophytes are commonly seen after previous microfracture and removed during ACI. There have been no reports on potential recurrence. Our purpose was to evaluate the incidence of intralesional osteophyte development in 2 cohorts: existing intralesional osteophytes and without intralesional osteophytes at the time of ACI. Study Design We identified 87 patien…
