INTRODUCTION: Accurate discrimination of Panax ginseng, P. quinquefolius, and P. notoginseng is crucial in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Distinct from conventional small molecule compounds (e.g., saponins, volatile oils), proteins, or polysaccharides, this study pioneers small molecular weight saccharide fractions (SMS) as a novel class of biomarkers for species differentiation.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop an SMS-based method for distinguishing the three Panax plants.
METHODS: A simple and reproducible workflow was developed for obtaining natural SMS from the three Panax sp

BACKGROUND: The imbalance of macrophage polarization plays a pivotal role in the progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Reprogramming macrophages from the pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype to the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype is considered a promising therapeutic strategy.
METHODS: To address this challenge, Panax notoginseng polysaccharides (PNP) with varying molecular weights were chemically conjugated with deoxycholic acid (DC) to obtain amphiphilic conjugates (PNP-DC), which self-assembled into micelles (PNP-Ms). After screening for optimal molecular weight, folic acid (FA) was introduced

Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer is a shade plant, and its leaves are an important medicinal part of P. ginseng. Light intensity plays a crucial role in physiological activities and metabolite accumulation in P. ginseng. Currently, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying physiological changes and quality under different light intensities in P. ginseng leaves. Therefore, we investigated the changes in photosynthetic physiology, secondary metabolism, transcriptomics, and metabolomics of P. ginseng leaves under different light intensities [T20 (20 µmol m-2·s-1), T50 (50 µmol m-2·s-1), T

Cisplatin (CDDP) may induce apoptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells (RTEC) and cause CDDP-induced acute kidney injury (CAKI) during cancer treatment, but yet lack of preventive measures and effective treatment. As a new Chinese herbal preparation, Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) has been found to mitigate CDDP-induced CAKI through elevating the expression of HIF-1α in the rat model, according to the data from our previous works. However, the underlying link between HIF-1α and apoptosis has not been well elucidated. The current study as a follow-up work, was aimed to reveal if PNS improves

The study highlights the influence and signal transduction mechanism of postharvest UV-B on the production of Rg1 in Panax quinquefolius roots during the drying process. The results showed that postharvest UV-B irradiation induced generation of nitric oxide (NO), jasmonic acid (JA), and ginsenoside Rg1 of P. quinquefolius roots. The UV-B-induced increase of Rg1 was suppressed by NO-specific scavenger (cPTIO) and NOS inhibitors (PBITU), JA synthesis inhibitor (SHAM), and JA synthesis inhibitor (PrGall), indicating that NO and JA played essential parts in UV-B-induced Rg1. External NO inhibitors

Skeletal muscle is an important organ for controlling the development of type 2 diabetes. We discovered Panax notoginseng roots as a candidate to improve hyperglycemia through in vitro muscle cells screening test. Saponins are considered as the active ingredients of ginseng. However, in the body, saponins are converted to dammarane-type triterpenes, which may account for the anti-hyperglycemic activity. We developed a method for producing a dammarane-type triterpene extract (DTE) from Panax notoginseng roots and investigated the extract's potential anti-hyperglycemic activity. We found that DT

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis (AS) is a central pathological driver underlying most cardiovascular diseases. Gut microbiota and related metabolites participate in regulating atherosclerosis. Panax ginseng and Polygonum cuspidatum (GP) herb pair has traditionally been used for cardiovascular diseases. Some active compounds in GP have shown anti-atherosclerotic effects and the effects of GP still needs more evidence-based supports. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the potential effects of GP on atherosclerosis and explore the underlying mechanisms.
METHODS: Fifty C57BL/6J ApoE-/- mice we

To address issues of pesticide resistance and environmental pollution in the chemical control of ginseng black spot (caused by Alternaria panax) and the unstable efficacy of traditional biological control, this study developed chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) coloaded with antimicrobial berberine (BR) and immune-activating salicylic acid (SA), referred to as BR/SA@CSNPs, based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory of "eliminating pathogens and reinforcing vital qi" (Qu Xie Fu Zheng), aiming to simultaneously suppress pathogens and activate plant resistance. BR/SA@CSNPs were prepared via opt

Ginseng Alternaria leaf and stem blight, caused by Alternaria panax, imposes substantial yield and economic losses to the ginseng cultivation industry. Current diagnostic methods for ginseng diseases primarily rely on pathogen isolation from infected tissues, a procedure that is laborious, time-consuming, and inherently low in sensitivity. This study has therefore developed a rapid, specific and sensitive SYBR Green-based quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay for detecting A. panax in plants, seeds, and soil. The developed qPCR assay exhibited high sensitivity and repeatability, with a detec

The purpose of this study was to investigate possible beneficial effects of Panax ginseng (PG) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats. CCl(4) challenge elevated serum enzyme activities of liver and some biochemical parameters, but these effects were prevented by the pretreatment of rats with PG. Histologically, a great amount of mononuclear cells infiltration, necrotic cells and few fibroblasts were observed in liver of CCl(4) group. Also, CD68(+) and caspase-3 staining cells were diffused in both lobular and portal areas. However, PG pretreatment had a little in

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly malignant gastrointestinal tumor, and its nutritional intervention strategies remain relatively limited. Ginseng, a representative medicinal herb officially included in China's "Food and Medicinal Same Origin" catalogue, is widely used in tea beverages, soups, and functional foods. Its active component, ginsenoside Rb1 (GRB1), derived from the medicine-food homology plant Panax ginseng, has been reported to possess antitumor and immunomodulatory effects, but its role in the PDAC tumor microenvironment remains unclear. This study aims to scree
