OBJECTIVES: To analyze the computed tomography (CT) findings of idiopathic mesenteric panniculitis and the factors related to its characteristics and to improve the understanding of the disease.
METHODS: The imaging findings of 121 patients with mesenteric panniculitis were retrospectively analyzed, along with related factors such as age, sex, and abdominal visceral fat area.
RESULTS: Among the 121 patients, two had midgut malrotation, and the lesions were located outside the mesentery on the right side of the abdominal cavity, while the lesions in the other patients were located around the

BACKGROUND An 82-year-old woman presented with acute pyrexial illness and mesenteric panniculitis and developed biochemical aseptic meningitis (cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis with no identifiable pathogen). Investigation determined her illness was likely a delayed hypersensitivity reaction caused by sulfasalazine. Sulfasalazine-induced aseptic meningitis is a rare condition often diagnosed late in a patient's admission owing to initial non-specific illness symptomatology requiring the exclusion of more common "red flag" etiologies, such as infection and malignancy. CASE REPORT An 82-year-old

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare disease of the mesenterium of unknown cause and chronic evolution. Two presentations have been reported: mesenteric panniculitis and retractile mesenteritis; inflammation of mesenteric fat predominates in one of them, while fibrotic thickening and shortening of the mesenterium is characteristic of the other. We report two cases of sclerosing mesenteritis which presented in very different ways. One patient suffered an episode of intestinal obstruction, and the second one was admitted for evaluation of fever of unknown origin (FUO). While intestinal obstruction

Eighteen cases of mesenteric panniculitis of the colon collected from the literature, together with two cases from the authors' source, were reviewed. The disease occurred most often in late adult life, with a male predominance. Symptoms were abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, and a lower abdominal mass in most patients. Barium enema disclosed narrowing, shortening, and poor extensibility of the colon, and ultrasonography and computed tomography showed thickening of the mesocolon and colonic wall with soft-tissue density. Exploratory laparotomy was done in all patients, and colectomy, col

Lupus panniculitis usually affects the hypodermis and the dermis profundus (Irgang's lupus profundus). In our case, the systemic lupus erythematosus was preceded by an intraabdominal panniculitis, occurring as a voluminous tumor. Histological examination showed the usual picture of panniculitis, but there were also severe fibrinoid necrotic lesions, which should have alerted us. Lupus must be included among the etiologies of intraabdominal panniculitis.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal volvulus arises from the twisting of an intestinal loop around a fixed axis. This condition is distinguished by both the obstruction and constriction of the intestinal lumen, as well as the entrapment of intestinal blood vessels. Consequently, the intestinal obstruction resulting from volvulus is often of the strangulating variety, which poses a risk for swift intestinal necrosis. Mesenteric tumors are a notable precipitant of volvulus. However, certain nontumor lesions originating from the mesentery can also lead to severe intestinal volvulus.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare benign disease presenting with chronic inflammation of the mesenteric adipose tissue and variable degrees of fibrosis. A 47-year-old black man presented to the emergency department with symptoms of small bowel obstruction, requiring surgical treatment. The laparotomy revealed a stenosis of the distal ileum with mesenteric thickening and an enterectomy was performed. The postoperative period was complicated by the maintenance of bowel obstruction. The patient underwent a second laparotomy, in which the fibrosing process of the mesentery was much aggravated, and

Mesenteric panniculitis is an underdiagnosed inflammatory condition of unknown etiology that involves the mesenteric adipose tissue. Clinical symptoms are not specific (fever, abdominal pain, or nausea), so diagnosis is not simple. We report a case of 48-year-old man with abdominal pain and fever not responsive to antipyretics and antibiotics for 2 months, who underwent an F-FDG PET/CT after a nondiagnostic CT scan. PET/CT has proven to be a useful method for the diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis in this patient, showing a uniformly high uptake of FDG in the mesenteric adipose tissue of the

A 53-year-old female who complained of constipation and abdominal fullness was referred to our hospital. A tender low abdominal mass was palpable. Imaging (abdominal ultrasonography, CT, and MRI) revealed that the tumor had spread to the mesosigmoid and the superior mesentery. The tumor was very difficult to diagnose on the basis of imaging alone. Therefore, we obtained a biopsy at the time of laparotomy for definitive diagnosis. The biopsy showed extensive fibrosis and lymphocyte, plasma cell, and eosinophil infiltration in the associated adipose tissue. Sclerosing mesenteritis was diagnosed.

PURPOSE: Mesenteric panniculitis is a rare inflammatory disease. The inflammation produces a lesion which appears as a mass, and normally produces abdominal pain without any other significant clinical signs. The radiological pattern is not typical, but the diagnosis is aided by a number of elements which are important to recognise in order to avoid invasive diagnostic methods or therapy. Six cases are presented, all evaluated with sonography, Color-Doppler US, Spiral CT and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated six patients with negative clinical histories and

Intraabdominal panniculitis is a rare, benign idiopathic disorder of the mesentery. Patients usually present with abdominal pain and a palpable mass. The cross-sectional imaging findings are characteristic and consist of a fibrofatty central mesenteric mass lesion encapsulating the mesenteric vessels with displacement of the bowel loops, that can suggest the diagnosis. Imaging is also important to establish a definitive diagnosis by an image-guided percutaneous biopsy, assess extent of the disease for selection of appropriate therapy, exclude associated abnormalities namely malignancies, and f

Mesenteritis is an uncommon condition characterized by a variable clinical course, in which spontaneous remission may occur, but in which uncontrollable disease activity leads to death [corrected]. We describe a construction worker with mesenteritis who presented with vague abdominal discomfort and mucoid diarrhoea. A large, irregular mass was found in the abdomen. Upon explorative laparotomy, a large, rubbery, grey and yellow, irresectable tumorous mass was found, which apparently originated from the mesentery of the small bowel. The large bowel was expanded over the tumorous mass. A defuncti

Intraabdominal sclerosing panniculitis is a fibroinflammatory lesion of the intraabdominal fat tissue of unknown origin. The authors report 4 secondary cases, that were associated with other kind of intestinal pathology. The cases had different clinical manifestation (mesenterial sclerosis leading to bowel obstruction, lesion simulating transmural spread or peritoneal metastasis of colorectal carcinoma, and chance finding associated with ulcerative colitis). They review the literature and summarize the features of the reactive process characterized by a spindle cell proliferation, fibrosis (sc

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine how the hemodynamic parameters of the superior mesenteric artery are affected in mesenteric panniculitis.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with a diagnosis of mesenteric panniculitis on computed tomography were evaluated with duplex Doppler sonography. The control group consisted 20 asymptomatic volunteers. The peak systolic velocity, end-diastolic velocity (EDV), resistive index (RI), pulsatility index (PI), blood flow volume, and body mass index were measured in the group of patients with mesenteric panniculitis, and the findings were compared with those of the

Here we report a case of sclerosing mesenteritis that we diagnosed with needle biopsy under the guidance of computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US) observation. An 82-year-old woman presented with appetite loss, weight loss and epigastric pain. CT of the abdomen and pelvis revealed increased density of the mesentery adjacent to the small bowel and enlarged lymph nodes. Sclerosing mesenteritis was suspected, but malignancies, such as lymphoma, were also considered. We performed CT and US-guided needle biopsy with the coaxial technique. An introducer needle was inserted, its correct locatio

Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is a rare, benign inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, affecting the membranes of the digestive tract that involves lymphoplasmacytic inflammation, fat necrosis, and fibrosis of the mesentery. We report a child patient with a history of recurrent abdominal pain and fever who was found to have an intra-abdominal mass suspicious for malignancy. A tissue biopsy revealed the diagnosis of SM associated with IgG4-related systemic disease. The patient is currently maintained on 5 mg prednisone daily and no recurrence of symptoms was noted during the 24-month follow-
