Described here is a patient with esophageal carcinoma who had hypercalcemia, an elevated serum level of parathyroid hormone and normal parathyroid glands. A review of the literature reveals that a total of 25 other patients with ectopic hyperparathyroidism in esophageal malignancy have been described, four of whom had documented elevations of serum parathyroid hormone levels. Esophageal neoplasms should be added to the list of tumors associated with ectopic secretion of parathyroid hormone.

Calcitonin was measured in the plasma of 13 patients with medullary throid carcinoma and one patient with a calcitonin-producing islet cell carcinoma of the pancreas. The hormone was measured by the simultaneous application of two calcitonin antisera which had differing specificity. Calcitonin measurements were also made of gel filtration (Bio Gel P30) fractions of plasma samples. Although the two antisera were of comparable sensitivity for the measurement of human calcitonin standards, they reacted differently with the calcitonin in the plasma samples. One antiserum (LD-1) gave consistently h

A patient under treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia developed lobar pneumonia after 8 months. When antileukaemic therapy was discontinued, features of an ectopic ACTH syndrome developed, secondary to bronchogenic carcinoma. Exogenous steroid therapy for leukaemia seemed to suppress the clinical manifestations of the ectopic ACTH syndrome while subsequent endogenous steroid production controlled the peripheral lymphocyte count.

Lipase hypersecretion syndrome (LHS) is a paraneoplastic syndrome seen exclusively as a result of pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (ACC). In LHS, acinar enzymes (lipase, trypsin and chymotrypsin) which are normally secreted to the duodenum for digestive purposes, are instead released to the blood by the carcinoma cells. In a way, it is "endocrine-ization" of an "exocrine" function. These circulating enzymes, especially lipase, exerts its digestive action on other tissues, especially on the subcutaneous tissues in the pressure poins of legs, creating a picture often mistaken as erythema nodosum

BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by hypophosphatemia associated with elevated fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). TIO is primarily caused by benign mesenchymal tumors of the soft tissue and skeleton. Rarely, it is associated with a solid tumor or hematological malignancy. To date, no case of osteomalacia related to pancreatic cancer has been reported in the literature.
CASE REPORT: A 77-year-old woman was admitted to the rheumatology department (RD) of the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital (France) for further evaluation of her hypoph

In this review, the value of assessing proliferation parameters in surgically resected pituitary tumour tissue is analyzed. Histological examination of basal dura biopsies identifies invasive growth even when intraoperatively not apparent to the surgeon. Determination of DNA-polymerase activity, Ki-67 immunohistochemistry and DNA-flow-cytometry shows a clear difference in the proliferative potential of enclosed and invasive pituitary adenomas. Among the various endocrinologically differentiated groups ACTH-secreting adenomas associated with Nelson's syndrome and thyrotropinomas were the most r

Data in the literature communicated in 63 publications were evaluated in which scintigraphically warm or hot nodules were described as identical to a follicular or papillary carcinoma diagnosed based on histology of the resection specimen, thus suggesting autonomous hyperfunction of a malignant thyroid neoplasia. In the majority of cases, this assumption could not be accepted, or only within strict limits. In these patients, it appeared more likely that the carcinoma was located adjacent to or within a benign hyperfunctioning thyroid area or that large masses of a thyroid carcinoma had only si

Endocrine tumors of the pancreas are extremely rare (1-3%). We present two cases with functional inactive tumors--one benign and one malignant--, which were immunohistologically secreting glucagon without having clinical symptoms. Differential diagnosis, operative strategy and therapy of endocrine tumors of the pancreas are discussed.

Some pituitary hormones secrete hormones while others do not. Nonsecreting tumors can interfere with normal pituitary hormone secretion and produce tumor symptoms and signs like headaches and visual field defects. The most frequent hormone-secreting tumors are prolactinomas. Growth hormone or ACTH or gonadotropin or gonadotropin-alpha and beta chain-producing tumors are less frequent, TSH producing tumors are extremely rare. The most important elements of the diagnostic work-up are clinical signs and symptoms, assessment of pituitary function (measurement of TSH, free T4, LH, FSH, oestradiol/f

Hypercalcemia secondary to malignancies can be divided into two groups according to their calcium elevating mechanism: solid tumors with bony metastases, most frequently originating from the breast or the bronchi, and solid tumors without bony metastases, associated with secretion by the tumor of a substance which increases the calcium level. This substance resembles parathormone in pseudo-hyperparathyroidism, prostaglandins, or other substances not yet identified. The most common tumors involved are bronchial or renal cancers. Diagnostic problems vary depending on whether the cancer has been

There are few cases of catecholamine-secreting paragangliomas of the neck reported in the literature, most of these being of the carotid body and glomus-jugulare type. This report cites the second case of a functioning vagal body tumor secreting norepinephrine predominantly and producing labile hypertension and symptoms of pheochromocytoma. A brief update on vagal body tumors and a review of the functioning paragangliomas of the head and neck are also presented.

A male patient presenting with primary hyperaldosteronism after a three-year delay, was found to have an aldosterone producing adrenocortical carcinoma. Evidence is presented that aldosterone was the only steroid produced in excess. Only six other patients with adrenocortical carcinoma and isolated primary hyperaldosteronism could be traced in the literature. The relation between histology and endocrine functions of the tumor cells is discussed.

Urinary estradiol production rates, plasma estradiol, and peripheral conversion of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) to estradiol were explored in patients whose neoplasms made human chorionic gonadotropin and/or human chorionic gonadotropin beta fragments. In five men with choriocarcinoma, estradiol production was elevated, plasma estradiol was high, and DHEAS conversion to estradiol ranged from 0.5 to 11.7%. In six patients with "ectopic" gonadotropin-producing tumors, originating from lung, stomach, and liver, estradiol production was elevated to a lesser degree. Sera from 154 of 864 p

We present the results of a cooperative study of 15 cases of suprasellar dysgerminomas (ectopic pinealomas) and a review of cases of the literature with histological confirmation. In all the cases, histological similarities to the germinomas which appear extracerebrally, particularly testicular seminomas, were observed. We were unable to find in the sellar region tumors of true pineal histology and tend therefore to confirm the germinal origin of these neoplasms. From a clinical point of view, we define a syndrome that these tumors produce, consisting of diabetes insipidus as the first sign, v

Ten patients with thyroid carcinoma and co-existing thyrotoxicosis have been studied. In six patients thyroid carcinoma was suspected before thyroidectomy. In three of the four patients in whom neoplasia was not suspected before operation, the lesion was a small papillary carcinoma. In only one of the eight patients in whom serum long acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) and long acting thyroid stimulator protector (LATSP) were assayed was detectable activity found, a low incidence. The possible role of hyperthyroidism in initiating thyroid malignancy is discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Although the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone has connection with various malignant tumors, there are few reports associated with advanced gastric cancer.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 63-year-old Korean male with inappropriate antidiuretic hormone syndrome due to an ectopic antidiuretic hormone-producing advanced gastric adenocarcinoma manifested with overt serum hypo-osmolar hyponatremia and high urinary sodium concentrations. His adrenal, thyroidal, and renal functioning were normal, and the hyponatremia improved following removal of the tumor. Th
